Butene film resins from Nova Chemicals promise higher efficiency

by: Rick Lingle

Nova Chemicals Corp. (Calgary, Alberta, Canada), a major supplier of Nova Chemical butene bread filmpolyethylene in the Americas, has introduced three new polyethylene butene film resins. The NOVAPOL PF-Y818 Series resins permit film manufacturers to achieve significant output increases and improved performance compared to traditional butene linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE).

“The series is one resin grade with different additive packages to suit many different customer purposes and applications,” explains Alan Schrob, group market leader, Nova Chemicals, to PlasticsToday. “Each of these resins have varied additives to help with film stabilization specific to the converter’s application and line conditions.

“In one word, the story with this new butene film resin series is efficiency,” continues Schrob. “We’re excited that our customers are reporting significant efficiency improvements on their manufacturing lines. Some have shared with us that they are finding improved efficiency rates ranging from 10-20 percent because the properties in these new resins allow the lines to run faster.Butene film resins Nova Chemicals

“These gains lead to higher revenue per film line and could allow deferment of capital expenditures on new blown film lines.”

Designated individually as PF-Y818-BPX, PF-Y818-CPX and PF-Y818-FX, Shrob reports that customers are using the resins “for a wide range of flexible film applications including food packaging, stretch film, industrial liners and retail trash bags.”

Productivity gains are enabled by the melt strength of the resins, which increases bubble stability on blown film lines, allowing the lines to run faster. The series’ enhanced melt strength can also allow extruders to simplify structures and blends by reducing or eliminating the need for LDPE. In addition, the three resins feature an exceptional balance of physical properties including excellent clarity and low gels, which significantly improve optics compared to traditional butene LLDPE.

“These new grades allow our customers to improve their productivity without sacrificing the consistency, reliability and versatility they have come to expect in our Novapol resins,” says Shrob. “We are pleased to report that there has been a very good response to these new resins.”

The resins were introduced this fall during Pack Expo Las Vegas.
