LyondellBasell tries to launch a reactor in the production of olefins in Corpus Christi

MOSCOW ( Market Report ) – Preparations of the US company LyondellBasell (LBI), the world’s largest producer of polyolefins, to restart the reactor at the olefin complex in Corpus Christi, Texas, led to flaring, ICIS reported citing A statement of the company sent to the Texas Environmental Protection Commission (TCEQ).

LyondellBasell olefins Corpus ChristiAccording to the statement, emissions began on Saturday, July 15, and ended on Sunday, July 16.

Earlier it was noted that on June 29, LBI suddenly had a technical problem on the compressor of the olefin complex in Corpus Christi, which led to flaring.

As reported by MRC, in January of this year LBI completed the project of capacity expansion at the cracking installation in Corpus Christi. Due to the increase in ethylene capacity at the site in Corpus Christi, the cracking unit can now produce 363,000 tons of ethylene per year more than the previous capacity of the plant (771,000 tons of ethylene and 285,000 tons of propylene per year). Thus, now the capacity of the enterprise for the production of ethylene is 1.1 tons per year.

At the same time, as previously reported by the Market Report company, LBI postponed the project to expand the production of ethylene by 250 thousand tons per year in Channelview, Texas, in July 2016, Bob Patel told journalists. At the same time, the company does not exclude its implementation in the next decade.

Ethylene and propylene are the main raw materials for the production of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), respectively.

According to the DataScope of the company MRC, the total volume of external supplies of PE to the Russian market grew by 8% in comparison with the level of 2016 in the first five months of the year and amounted to about 220 thousand tons. Supplies of low-density polyethylene (HDPE) and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) have risen dramatically. Imports of PP in Russia decreased in January-May 2017 by 5% compared to the same period in 2016 and amounted to 61.1 thousand tons. At the same time, external supplies of exclusively homopolymers of propylene (PP-homo) decreased.

LyondellBasell is one of the world’s largest producers of polypropylene, a leading supplier of polyethylene and catalysts, as well as a developer of polyethylene and polypropylene manufacturing technologies. The company produces products at 58 production sites in 18 countries. In addition, LyondellBasell is the developer of the process of Spheripol, which is the basis of polypropylene production at Omsk Polyom and Nizhnekamskneftekhim.
