New thickness sensor for strip, plate and film targets

At the Engineering Design Show (18-19 October), Micro-Epsilon UK (stand C25) will showcase its full range of sensor technologies.

Thickness sensor strip plate film

This includes non-contact capacitive, eddy current and laser triangulation displacement sensors, as well as 2D/3D laser profile sensors, thermal imagers and colour sensors. The stand will also feature two new measurement systems: thicknessSENSOR and moldCONTROL.

thicknessSENSOR is an affordable, compact thickness measurement system for strip, plate and film targets. The fully assembled system is immediately ready for use ‘out of the box’ and costs less than £10,000. The system is designed to bridge the gap between customers’ own self-build solutions and the high cost, large investment thickness measurement systems that involve commissioning by the supplier’s own engineers.

moldCONTROL is an inline thermal imaging system for the early detection of defects and quality fluctuations in injection moulded parts, including multi-layered or transparent moulded parts. The system is particularly well suited to large, complex, multi-layered or transparent moulded parts and can be easily retrofitted to existing injection moulding machines. Materials include all plastics, polymers, elastomers, rubber and even glass.

In addition, the stand will also feature five interactive product demonstrations:

Colour measurement system

For those with a need to measure colour, the stand will also feature a demonstration of the colorCONTROL ACS7000, an inline high speed colour measurement system that measures the actual colour of the target by identifying their coordinates in the colour space. The system can be set up to continually monitor a production process and output the colour measurement via Ethernet, EtherCAT or RS422. The system can also be taught ‘pass fail/limits’ and then output out-of-tolerance alarms using digital I/O. Existing applications include automotive paint inspection, colour measurement of car interiors, coloured glass, transparent film and sheet production, printing, packaging, medical technology, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and in the processing of plastics, food, wood, paper, veneer and textiles.

Eddy current controller with auto-calibration

Combustion engines must withstand maximum loads during a long service life. In order to deal with this requirement, eddy current sensors from the eddyNCDT series are installed in the engine for a variety of measurement tasks. Examples include the measurement of valve lift, needle lift, breathing of the cylinder head, oil film thickness, crankshaft concentricity, crankshaft axial movement and piston secondary movement. The demonstration on the stand features the eddyNCDT sensor measuring the lubricating gap on a piston/cylinder.

Laser triangulation at its best

Visitors can also see a demonstration of the optoNCDT 1320 and optoNCDT 1420 laser displacement sensors. The sensors are suitable for a variety of medium-to-high volume applications in automation, machine building and systems integration, particularly where conventional laser sensors have reached the limits of their performance capabilities.

The sensors are compact, lightweight and so can be mounted in tight spaces on machines or other difficult-to-access locations. Designed for high precision, high speed, dynamic displacement, distance and position measurement applications, the sensors offer an adjustable measuring rate up to 4kHz and an excellent price-performance ratio, particularly for high volume OEM applications.

Blue laser profile sensor

The scanCONTROL 2910-25 BL is a new high performance laser profile sensor with a sharp focused 25mm blue laser line. The sensor is ideal for applications where absolute precision is required on small or difficult-to-measure surfaces such as transparent plastic film, glass, red-hot glowing metals and organic (e.g. foods, wood) materials. This compact sensor with integrated electronics measures at a rate of 1280 points per profile with a 25mm field of view (FOV) for both Z- and X-axes, with an X-axis resolution of 20µm and a Z-axis reference resolution from 2µm. On the stand, a rotating display table will feature four different measurement examples.

Measuring to nanometre accuracy

The capabilities of the high precision, integrated capacitive displacement measuring system – the capaNCDT 6200 – will be demonstrated on the stand by measuring the deflection of granite stone to nanometre accuracy (resolution is down to 0.002µm). The capaNCDT 6200 comprises a control unit, demodulator and Ethernet interface that supports fast and easy configuration through a web browser. The system allows up to four additional measurement channels to be added (or removed) to the base controller unit without any loss of performance or disruption. Any Micro-Epsilon capacitive displacement sensor can be connected to the controller without any additional calibration required.
