NPE ’18: PolyOne finds new uses for PVC

Source:ICIS News

NPE 2018 PolyOne PVC ORLANDO (ICIS)–Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) suppliers are developing new uses for the resin in the medical, transportation and consumer industries.

“It’s still one of the most chemical resistant polymers,” said Don Wiseman, head of performance products for PolyOne on the sidelines of the National Plastics Exposition. ”That’s an important property for plastics exposed to hand lotions, cleansers and solvents.”

PolyOne has found new uses for PVC, such as in light-emitting diode (LED) lighting applications. The company is using the plastic for metal-like light fixtures and lenses that diffuse light. PVC is ideal for these applications because it can stand up to the weather in outdoor lights and is resistant to corrosion and chemical cleansers.

In the past, there were some health concerns about PVC for some applications because of the use of phthalate-based plasticizers. But newer formulations mean it is considered safe for even medical applications.

PolyOne is also focusing on applications in the health care industry, where PVC has long been a standard material for blood bags and other sensitive applications.

With more people receiving higher-level health care at home, PolyOne is looking at PVC applications for easy-to-clean devices and wearable monitors.

“Hospital beds can weight 300 lb [140 kg], so if we can help reduce the weight, design smooth, cleanable surfaces and make it affordable, we think there is a vast market,” Wiseman said.

ORLANDO (ICIS)–SABIC is looking to become a top 5 global producer of specialty plastics through fresh capital investments both internally and with partner companies, said Steve Bayne, general manager of operations and customer fulfillment at the company, during a Monday news conference at the National Plastics Exposition (NPE).

Bayne said SABIC is engaging in new capacity investments to build up its specialty plastics portfolio.

Among these investments is a project to raise capacity of ULTEM resins by 50% in Singapore, as well as a project to resume production of NORYL resins at its facility at Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands, which will raise production of NORYL resins by 40%.

ULTEM is a high-heat resistant filament with applications in automotive, healthcare, carbon fibre tooling and short-cycle injection moulding applications. NORYL are modified polyphenylene ether (PPE) resins that consists of amorphous blends of polyphenylene oxide (PPO) and polystyrene (PS).

With the new investment in ULTEM resins, SABIC will become the only producer manufacturing high-heat-resistant resins in each of the European, Asian and American regions.

Bayne said that SABIC is also expanding its additive manufacturing capabilities by making a capital investment in Airborne, a company specialised in automating the process of creating thermoplastic composite laminates for the aerospace and marine sectors, as well as forming a joint venture with Black Diamond Structures, a nanotechnology start-up with a focus on energy storage applications.

SABIC’s recent acquisition of a 24.99% stake in Clariant was also listed among their efforts to expand additive manufacturing. Bayne said that SABIC’s acquisition of the stake in Clariant is expected to get regulatory approval in July.

Moretto Doubles Down On North America at NPE2018

Moretto USA LLC, daughter company of Italy’s Moretto S.p.A., heads to North America’s largest plastics event after moving to a new, much larger facility in Western Pennsylvania to better serve the region.

Moretto has two booths at NPE2018: W8545 and S17095, in the West and South halls, with the South hall booth in The Bottle Zone. Here, Moretto recreates PET preform and cap molding operations, displaying resin conveying, blending and drying. Featured equipment includes a “smart” Moretto One Wire3 conveying system, a Gravix DGM 900 gravimetric batch blender, Eureka Plus drying, Purex condensate separator, and the MOWIS supervisory control system operating Smart Factory 4.0. The system also has a Moretto Mold Dryer for preventing condensation on the tool.

In the company’s West Hall booth, Smart Factory 4.0 shows the integration of every devicewhile the Eureka Plus drying system provides reduced energy consumption and improved drying performance, particularly for PET. According to Moretto, processors that have adopted Eureka Plus drying have experienced an average reduction in energy consumption of 56% compared to conventional drying. The Eureka Plus package entails real-time moisture analysis (Moisture Meter), multi-bed drying with a consistent dewpoint (X Max), dynamic airflow management (Flowmatik), and superior mass-flow drying characteristics (OTX).

The Moretto Moisture Meter Manager provides in-line measurement of moisture in a closed loop system monitored by the company’s Smart Factory 4.0 software. Smart Factory 4.0, in turn, is managed by Moretto’s MOWIS software, which serves to unify all the plant’s machines for integrated process control, monitoring and management from anywhere.

In resin conveying, Moretto is displaying its One Wire3 control system for centralized management, as well as the Kasko range of resin hopper loaders and receivers; Dolphin pneumatically-operated manifold; Kruise Kontrol automatic speed control and Loader F24 high capacity, self-contained hopper loader.

New at NPE 2018, and designed specifically for U.S. processors, is the Loader F24 stainless-steel, high-capacity, self-contained hopper loader that operates on common, single-phase power. Moretto says with the F24, large quantities of resin can be transferred automatically as required, without a central vacuum system.

The company’s Gravix gravimetric blender is also on hand. Featuring rugged, “double eyelid” dose metering, a precision batch-weighing hopper, and an easily cleaned mixer, the Gravix also has Moretto’s exclusive Vibration Immunity System. This is said to ensure accurate weighing, even when mounted on injection machines that could vibrate as the platens open and close. Eight models with throughputs from 11 to 11,000 lb/hr and up to 12 materials are available. A color, touch-screen control powers set-up, use, troubleshooting and maintenance and accommodates storage of up to 200 recipes. Moretto is also featuring its stainless steel range of TEKO liquid temperature controllers, in water and oil. Models range in power from 0.6 to 54 Kw, with temperatures up to 574 F.

NPE ’18: Light-blocking additives help boost PET sales to dairy

NPE 2018 Lightblocking additives PET dairy ORLANDO (ICIS)–Light-blocking additives that preserve a clear colour for bottles are helping polyethylene terephthalate (PET) sellers increase sales to the dairy industry, according a marketing director at PolyOne.

“Milk will spoil quickly if exposed to visible light, so the challenge in devising PET bottles for the dairy industry involves finding a way to block visible light without using carbon black as consumers prefer clear or white-coloured bottles,” said Gary Fielding, global marketing director of the colour, additives and inks division at PolyOne.

He made his comments on the sidelines of the National Plastics Exposition (NPE) on Tuesday.

“PolyOne’s Lactra SX additive blocks 99.99% of UV and visible light, allowing the development of PET bottles for use in the dairy industry.  In Europe and North America, consumers have easy access to refrigerated dairy products.  In emerging economies such as South America, China and southeast Asia, consumers need a product with a longer shelf life. This has lead dairy producers in these regions to favour cardboard packaging rather than PET,” Fielding said.

“PET bottles with the Lactra SX additive have been a real game-changer in Asia, allowing the dairy industry to shift from cardboard to PET bottles for their packaging needs. Compared with cardboard, PET offers a lower total cost of manufacturing and improves sustainability as PET is more recyclable than cardboard.”
