-Commentary: US launches 3rd round of tariffs on China imports but blunts impact on chemicals

With the third round of US tariffs on $200bn in Chinese imports, the US is launching another phase in the US-China trade war. However, it is mitigating some of the impact by excluding a number of chemicals in the final list and setting a lower initial tariff rate.

The revised final list will initially have a tariff rate of 10% versus the 25% previously considered. In it, 142 chemicals and finished plastics (just two finished plastics) were removed compared with the preliminary list, according to an analysis by the American Chemistry Council (ACC). The two finished plastics categories removed are plastic gloves – seamless and otherwise. Plastic chemicals plastic Biobased polymer oil

This third round will be implemented on 24 September, and the duties are set to rise to 25% by 1 January 2019 if there is no agreement on trade with China.

-Iran Accuses Saudi Arabia of Theft

Abdulrahman Al-Rashed is the former general manager of Al-Arabiya television. He is also the former editor-in-chief of Asharq Al-Awsat, and the leading Arabic weekly magazine Al-Majalla. He is also a senior columnist in the daily newspapers Al-Madina and Al-Bilad.

Iran has accused Russia and Saudi Arabia of stealing its share of oil, signaling the beginning of a long crisis! Iran knows very well that no one has stolen a barrel from it or from its share. The market has its rules that have not changed since ages ago; the oil market is for those who can sell oil and not those who sit on it.

Iran has a massive reserve underground but it produces a little and it will sell even less. Due to the American sanctions against it, it has lost half of its exports so far, although the US embargo on its oil purchases doesn’t go into effect before November.

-OPEC unlikely to agree official output increase in Algeria, but pressure mounts

DUBAI (Reuters) – OPEC and its allies are unlikely to agree an official increase in crude output when they meet in Algeria this weekend, although pressure is mounting on top producers to prevent a spike in oil prices ahead of new U.S. sanctions on Iran, OPEC sources said.

OPEC kingpin Saudi Arabia is worried that any sanctions-related spike in oil prices will trigger fresh criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump but is concerned about a lack of spare oil capacity to offset shortages, the sources said.

-China PP prices rising on tight supply ahead of holidays

Spot polypropylene (PP) prices in China have been rising continually on the back of tight supply ahead of upcoming public holidays, a trend likely to continue in the near term.

– Domestic prices keep climbing amid tight domestic supply

– Chinese markets to close for Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day celebration

– Import market inches up on the back of soaring domestic prices

In the week ended 14 September, domestic PP flat yarn prices in east China were assessed at Chinese Yuan (CNY) 9,870-10,080/tonne, up by CNY170/tonne from the previous week, according to ICIS data.

New research by Veolia reveals that the vast majority of people – 93%, think plastic bottles should contain recycled content and most are also willing to pay an average of 2.5p more for it.

Survey results published in Plan For Plastics, a new report launched by Veolia and plastics experts, RECOUP, describe an indisputable gap between what recycled content the public expect to be in plastic products and the reality

-Lidl pledges scrap black plastic packaging

Lidl has become the first UK supermarket to announce the removal of black plastic from its entire fruit and vegetable range, as the anti-plastic movement in the sector continues to gather pace.

As part of a plan to make 100 per cent of its own-brand plastic packaging recyclable, reusable or refillable, the discounter has revealed plans to scrap the black plastic altogether saving an estimated 50 tonnes of plastic waste a year.

-Now near 100 million bpd, when will oil demand peak?

Sometime in the next few weeks, global oil consumption will reach 100 million barrels per day (bpd) – more than twice what it was 50 years ago – and it shows no immediate sign of falling.

Despite overwhelming evidence of carbon-fuelled climate change and billions in subsidies for alternative technologies such as wind and solar power, oil is so entrenched in the modern world that demand is still rising by up to 1.5 percent a year.

There is no consensus on when world oil demand will peak but it is clear much depends on how governments respond to global warming. That’s the view of the International Energy Agency (IEA), which advises Western economies on energy policy.

-TWD Fibres launch Diolen Thermo reference project21

TWD Fibres have launched their first successful Diolen Thermo reference project. The project is about the usage of polyester hollow fibre filament yarn in mattress covers. Diolen Thermo is a polyester hollow fibre by TWD Fibres. The company is a leading developer of fully integrated filament yarns, customised and tailored to specific customer applications.

Hollow fibres made of polyester have a long history as an animal-friendly alternative to classic down and feather core fillings for bedding such as blankets and pillows. Hollow fibres as filament yarns, on the other hand, have barely made a splash in the bedding sector up to now.

-BLACK PLASTICS MADE RECYCLABLE

Next month, gourmet dairy brand The Collective will introduce a novel near-infrared (NIR) colourant technology developed by masterbatch and additive specialist Colour Tone, to ensure its iconic black plastic yogurt pot lids can be effectively recycled.

Like most black plastics the original Collective lid featured carbon black and other pigments which absorb the infrared signal used to sort plastics packaging, which made it ‘invisible’ to the sensors used by recycling operations.

This meant The Collective’s black yogurt pot lids would end up as residual waste destined for landfill or incineration, while its clear polypropylene tubs are recycled. The brand responded to this challenge by tasking its sustainability team to find a more eco-conscious design solution for its distinctive packaging.
