This phenomenon is known as decoupling, EEC says. In 2010, the amount of waste produced in the U.S. declined despite a rise in consumer spending. The study’s authors attribute the decoupling to the increased use of plastic in packaging.

EEC|CCNY also looked at scenarios where other types of packaging was used in place of plastic packaging to understand plastics’ potential impact on the total MSW generation in the U.S. On average, products made with alternatives require 3.2 times more material than plastics. Plastics packaging reduce solid waste

Jiutai’s Coal-to-Chemicals complex will produce synthesis gas by gasification of coal. The synthesis gas will be converted to methanol which will then be converted to formaldehyde from which MEG will be produced.

Johnson Matthey has also licensed to Jiutai its technologies and catalysts for the production of methanol and formaldehyde in an integrated MEG facility, which will maximize feedstock conversion and reduce utility consumption across the multi-step route from syngas to MEG.Johnson Matthey Eastman MEG Mongolia

This, combined with the advanced technology for MEG production and the large capacity, provides significant value addition whilst using abundantly available coal.

The methanol plant will be a world scale facility and any excess methanol above that required for MEG production will be used in other Jiutai facilities.

The formaldehyde plant will have an annual capacity of 1,500,000 m.t./yr and will be among the largest single site facility for formaldehyde production in the world.

Eastman and Johnson Matthey began development of the MEG technology from synthesis gas over a decade ago.

Extensive testing was conducted at the research facilities of Eastman and Johnson Matthey, and the MEG process was developed by combining the complementary capabilites of scientists and engineers of both companies.

A record number of plastic bottles are being recycled in Britain after the biggest increase in three years, according to new figures.  Plastic bottles recycled Britain Recoup

Statistics released by RECOUP, a plastic recycling charity, show 351,907 tonnes were collected from households for processing in 2017 – up 2.5% on the previous 12 months.

Sky Ocean Rescue has set the agenda on plastic reduction and recycling since January 2017, calling specifically for a deposit scheme on plastic bottles to stop so many being littered, landfilled or incinerated.  Plastic bottles recycled Britain Recoup

The need for a deposit scheme is underlined by further statistics in the RECOUP report.

Of 13 billion plastic bottles used each year in the UK, only 7.7 billion (59%) are collected for recycling.

In Norway, where bottles are sold with a small deposit that’s returned to consumers when they bring back their empties, more than 96% of bottles are recycled.

The plastic would have been worth £27m if it had been recycled.

The report shows a total of 2,260,000 tonnes of plastic packaging was used in 2017, with just 46%, or 1,044,363 tonnes, recycled. Plastic bottles recycled Britain Recoup

Steve Morgan, RECOUP technical manager, said: “There are still nearly 600,000 tonnes of rigid plastics packaging that could be collected for recycling.

“But the consumer is often unaware how they can make a difference by their individual actions, both by what plastics packaging they can recycle in their local area and how to present it for recycling. Plastic bottles recycled Britain Recoup

“There is still work to be done to develop reliable markets for some fractions of plastics, and to remove some of the discrepancies within the detail of how pot and tray recycling messages are given to the public.”  Plastic bottles recycled Britain Recoup

A significant issue is the lack of recycling in public areas.

Just 49% of local authorities providing recycling bins on streets and in open spaces.
