A research team led by DGIST Professor Jong-Sung Yu’s team at the Department of Energy Science and Engineering has successfully developed a new catalyst synthesis method that can efficiently decompose water into oxygen and hydrogen using solar light.

It is expected that this method will facilitate hydrogen mass production due to higher efficiency than the existing photocatalyst method.Technique turning sunshine water hydrogen fuel

Due to the intensifying environmental problems such as air pollution and global warming caused by the increased use of fossil energy, hydrogen is recently drawing attention as an ecofriendly energy source of next generation.Technique turning sunshine water hydrogen fuel

Accordingly, research is being conducted globally on how to produce hydrogen using solar light and photocatalyst by decomposing water.

To overcome the limitations of photocatalyst that only reacts to light in ultraviolet rays, researchers have doped dual atom such as Nitrogen (N), Sulfur (S), and Phosphorus (P) on photocatalyst or synthesized new photocatalysts, developing a photocatalyst that reacts efficiently to visible light.Technique turning sunshine water hydrogen fuel

With Professor Samuel Mao’s team at UC Berkeley in the U.S., Professor Yu’s research team developed a new H-doped photocatalyst by removing oxygen from the photocatalyst surface made of titanium dioxide and filling hydrogen into it through the decomposition of MgH2.Technique turning sunshine water hydrogen fuel

Energy of long wavelength including visible light could not be used for the existing white Titanium dioxide because it has a wide band gap energy.

However, the development of MgH2reduction could overcome this through oxygen flaw induction and H-doping while enabling the use of solar light with 570nm-wavelength.

MgH2 reduction can synthesize new matters by applying to Titanium oxide used in this research as well as the oxides composed of other atoms such as Zr, Zn, and Fe. This method is applicable to various other fields such as photocatalyst and secondary battery. The photocatalyst synthesized in this research has four times higher photoactivity than the existing white titanium dioxide and is not difficult to manufacture, thus being very advantageous for hydrogen mass production.Technique turning sunshine water hydrogen fuel

Another characteristic of the photocatalyst developed by the research team is that it reduces band gap more than the existing Titanium dioxide photocatalyst used for hydrogen generation and can maintain four times higher activity with stability for over 70 days.Technique turning sunshine water hydrogen fuel

The new method can also react to visible light unlike existing photosynthesis, overcoming the limitation of hydrogen production.

With the new photocatalyst development, the efficiency and stability of hydrogen production can both dramatically improved, which will help popularize hydrogen energy in the near future.Technique turning sunshine water hydrogen fuel

Professor Yu said “The photocatalyst developed this time is a synthesis method with much better performance than the existing photocatalyst method used to produce hydrogen. It is a very simple method that will greatly help commercialize hydrogen energy.

With a follow-up research on improving the efficiency and economic feasibility of photocatalyst, we will take the lead in creating an environment stable hydrogen energy production that can replace fossil energy.”

This study has been published on August 10 on the online edition of Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, a top 1% international journal in the chemical engineering catalyst field.

According to ICIS, paraxylene prices are now at USD1 339-1 341 per ton, CFR China and / or Taiwan, against quotes in the range of USD1 355-1 357 per ton, CFR China and / or Taiwan, on October 10.Paraxylene prices Asia falling oil prices

Thus, the paraxylene spot prices fell against the background of lower quotations registered in the downstream market for the production of purified terephthalic acid (TPA).

In addition, the reduced prices on the crude oil market, combined with the unfavorable macroeconomic situation on the market, exerted even greater downward pressure on the paraxylene quotes in the region.Paraxylene prices Asia falling oil prices

Paraxylene is a raw material for the synthesis of terephthalic acid – an intermediate for the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

According to the ICIS-MRC Price Review , in the Russian market, the cost of PET for contract customers in October increased sharply, while spot prices did not change.

Plastic milk bottles are made from high density polyethylene (HDPE) whereas margarine tubs are made from polypropylene.Scientists investigate plastics recycled

These two plastics cannot currently be recycled together so have to be separated by households or at the recycling centre.Scientists investigate plastics recycled

This process can mean that plastic ends up in landfill because the batch becomes accidentally contaminated with several types of the material.

Scientists and engineers at the University of Bath’s Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies and Manchester University are investigating ways of chemically breaking down mixtures of plastic into their constituent molecules.

These can then be used to manufacture new plastics or other high-value products.

Professor Matthew Davidson, director of the Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies at Bath, said: “Currently only about one third of plastic food packaging in the UK is recycled.Scientists investigate plastics recycled

“The UK Government aims to increase that to 75% by 2035.

“Part of this problem is that plastics have to be separated into different types as each type has different properties and they can’t be recycled together.

“Our colleagues in Manchester have already demonstrated a process to recover the chemical value from waste plastics and, together, we aim to develop this further in order to develop new technology for mixed plastics waste.Scientists investigate plastics recycled

“This means in the not-too-distant future people will be able to throw all their plastics in the same recycling bin without worrying about separating them.

“This could make a big difference to recycling rates and help us solve the urgent problem of plastic waste.”Scientists investigate plastics recycled

This project is one of seven being tackled by a consortium of UK universities and industrial partners, led by the University of Bath.Scientists investigate plastics recycled

These aim to develop new catalysts to enable more sustainable manufacturing and promote a circular economy, where waste materials are reused or recycled instead of being thrown away.Scientists investigate plastics recycled
