Electronic appliances: lighter vacuum cleaner components with enhanced durability enabling lower noise and increased energy efficiency

In home appliances, the high-performance polymer has allowed designers to explore new approaches to the design of smaller, yet powerful, vacuum cleaner components.

The ability to injection mould VICTREX PEEK to produce high engineering tolerance parts that are able to cope with high speeds, in some cases faster than 100,000 rpm (noting that jet engines only rotate at 15,000 rpm), while noise can be reduced by up to 50%, is impressive.

The material’s high stiffness-to-weight ratio also allows the impeller to maintain its shape at these high speeds, potentially resulting in stronger suction compared to more ductile materials.

In addition, when replacing machined metal parts it can enable reductions in the weight of parts, thus reducing the size of motors and the components needed, and is resistant to a wide range of household chemicals, and heat and moisture.

Injection molding contributes to potential cost savings for manufacturers compared to the machining parts from metals, and it also enables the rapid scaling up of new designs, shortening time to product launch and allowing faster, less capitally intensive, scaling up of manufacture.

Automotive E-motors: Will APTIV™ film end the quest for the ideal slot liner material?
With the automotive industry transitioning to electric vehicles, the quest for more efficient high-density e-motors and lower cost is still on.

Most motor manufacturers have opted to use the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) since this type of motor has a higher efficiency and occupies less volume compared to other types of e-motors.Victrex Fakuma Pioneering Polymer Solutions

As the PMSM is designed to cut off at temperatures that threaten to damage its internal insulation, thermal management is a crucial performance factor for e-motors for electric vehicles – the design of the insulating system is, clearly, instrumental.

In search of the “dream” slot liner insulator, Victrex engineers undertook a simulation of replacing a 250-micron meta-aramid-PET-laminate slot liner material with 150-micron PEEK polymer based APTIV™ film.

This simulation used a 40% thinner and more thermally conductive thermoplastic slot liner film which was shown to enable improved heat flow from the wire windings to the stator iron and outer-water-jacket cooling system.Victrex Fakuma Pioneering Polymer Solutions

Additional simulations have shown the excellent thermal conductivity of APTIV™ film which enables improved thermal management and reduction of peak winding temperatures by 2-3°C compared to traditional laminates and helps the e-motor stay cool.

With improved thermal management and thinner slot liners the simulations observed a potential increase in copper density (i.e. the slot-fill factor) of 2%.

Last but not least, the simulations found a 5% increase in continuous torque output – this could translate into higher power output for a same-size machine.

Gearing up with PEEK polymers in powertrain applications
In automotive, VICTREX PEEK is already frequently used in powertrain components such as seal rings, thrust washers, bushings and bearings, whereas gears in demanding powertrain applications sound a rather unlikely candidate for metal-replacement by the polymer.Victrex Fakuma Pioneering Polymer Solutions

However, with smaller and downsized engines, NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) is, today, one of the biggest challenges for OEMs and Tier1s, and Victrex’s polymer gear solutions have shown a reduction in rattle and noise issues in engine applications by up to 50% (3dB).

Compared to powdered metal gears, the weight and moment of inertia is also considerably lower with VICTREX HPG™ gears, contributing to higher system efficiency.

Game-changing composite solutions for aerospace
At the Fakuma show Victrex will also display a variety of VICTREX™ PAEK-based composite and hybrid overmolded composite parts for use in Aerospace.

The company is currently partnering with customers to meet their engineering challenges through the use of innovative solutions that offer continuous manufacturing processes and cycle times measured in minutes versus hours for thermoset alternatives.

Vydyne R433H offers improved energy absorption than conventional glass-reinforced PA 6.6, which dampens noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) as well as absorbs impact energy from crashes. According to Ascend, the new material helps carmakers save weight and increase efficiency.

Lightweighting and NVH reduction are important in e-cars, and Vydyne R433H is also suitable for battery frame and housing applications.

FM on PA 6.6 products from Pensacola continues
In a statement before Fakuma, Ascend CEO Phil McDivitt said because of “conflicting reports on long-term PA 6.6 availability,” the company reaffirms its commitment to meeting rising demand, supporting customers and maintaining reliable operations.
As announced, Ascend’s planned 40,000 t/y capacity expansion for PA 6.6 precursor adiponitrile (ADN) in Decatur, Alabama / USA for the end of 2018 is nearly complete – see Plasteurope.com of 07.06.2018.ASCEND PA 66 automotive Fakuma
The additional 180,000 t/y ADN expansion by 2022 is “underway to begin.” The company plans to keep adding capacity to relieve the “bulk of constraints” in the market.

The supply shortage on the global PA 6.6 market continues in the meantime. No easing is in sight from Pensacola, Florida, where Ascend declared force majeure on all PA 6.6 base polymers, compounds and fibres after a fire there on 10 July 2018 – see Plasteurope.com of 13.07.2018.

The FM remains in effect, although McDivitt noted that production is running at around 90% of capacity. The duration of the FM is still not known.

In September 2017, BASF and Solvay agreed that BASF would acquire Solvay’s polyamide business subject to approval of the relevant merger control authorities.

The approval process of the EU Commission is ongoing.

To meet the concerns of the EU Commission, BASF has offered to refrain from acquiring certain parts of Solvay’s European polyamide business including innovation capabilities and manufacturing assets of Solvay’s intermediate and engineering plastics business.

-What Killed The Oil Price Rally?

Oil prices fell to a one-month low on Wednesday, pushed down by a rather bearish report from the EIA that showed a large increase in crude inventories.

Brent briefly dipped below $80 per barrel and WTI was back below $70 per barrel as of Wednesday afternoon.

The EIA said that crude oil inventories rose by 6.5 million barrels in the week ending on October 12. Crude stocks have actually been rising since mid-September, and are now back up to 416.4 million barrels. The four consecutive weeks of inventory gains is the longest streak since early 2017.

Boeing and Adient have announced that their aircraft seating joint venture, Adient Aerospace, has secured regulatory approvals and is now officially operational. A joint venture between Procter & Gamble and Italian healthcare group Angelini is working to create a sustainable recycling loop that would allow dirty diapers to be turned into plastic bottle caps and viscose clothing.

More than 20 million tonnes of disposable diapers are burned or dumped in landfills globally every year – a major environmental problem since their use became widespread in the 1960s and 1970s.

Part of the problem is that collecting, cleaning and breaking diapers into their component parts – plastic, cellulose and superabsorbent polymer – is tricky and expensive.

thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions (Essen, Germany; www.thyssenkrupp-industrial-solutions.com)  announced that the world’s first commercial plant based on the company’s patented manufacturing process for the bioplastic polylactide (PLA) — the PLAneo technology — recently started production in Changchun, China.

It is operated by the Jilin COFCO Biomaterial Corporation, a subsidiary of COFCO, China’s largest food and beverage group. The new plant produces all standard PLA types, among other things for the production of eco-friendly packaging, fibers, textiles and engineering plastics.

The European Commission recently delivered its review of the 2012 European Bioeconomy Strategy. The strategy is a step forward towards ensuring that fossil resources are replaced by sustainable natural alternatives for the production of bio-based products such as bio-based plastics and energy. ‘Only by driving the transition in relevant markets, it will be possible to reach Europe’s climate change mitigation goals’, says Hasso von Pogrell, Managing Director at European Bioplastics (EUBP). ‘Implementation of the key actions of the updated Bioeconomy Strategy is paramount to making this happen’.

The strategy focuses on the importance of a stable regulatory framework as well as on research and innovation to accelerate the growth of the bioeconomy, which is already worth around 2,1 trillion euros in annual turnover in Europe. A huge PET recycling plant has begun operations in the Los Angeles area, and details have been released about equipment working in the vertically integrated facility.

The Vernon, Calif. rPlanet Earth facility has come on-line, one year after Plastics Recycling Update first wrote about the 302,000-square-foot facility a year ago.

The plant, which had its official grand opening on Oct. 11, takes in bales of post-consumer PET and processes them into bottle preforms, sheet and thermoform packaging.

The final products can contain a range of recycled content, up to 100 percent RPET.

CAPSULE LINERS, LIDS

One of the main indicators of a quality coffee is the crema. When using a coffee capsule, filter material ultrasonically welded onto the bottom of the capsule produces the crema. This process is called embedding.

The polyethylene terephthalate (PET) filter liner has a higher melting point than the polypropylene (PP) material of the capsules. As a result, the PP reacts more quickly to the ultrasonic vibrations, becomes viscous and flows into the PET. The resulting strong connection keeps the filter in position and ensures a high-quality crema even at high brewing pressure.

SEOUL, South Korea – Hyosung TNC, the textile and trading unit arm of Hyosung (KRX:004800) is turning its global spandex production bases into smartfactories in preparation for the era of Industry 4.0.

Recently, it established smart factory systems in the spandex plants inQuzhou, Jiaxing, Guangdong and Zhuhai in China and Dong Nai in Vietnam.

The systems are for process monitoring, quality control and smartInternet of Things (IoT).

They were installed under instructions from Hyosung Group Chairman HyunJoon Cho, who has pushed innovation in production and management eversince he was inaugurated as chairman last year.

Three new grades of Ryton-brand PPS are aimed at extrusion applications for the automotive market, Europe automotive area development manager Andreas Lutz said at the event. The new materials “can provide some properties that are highly required in automotive,” he added.

The flexibility of the new grades allow them to be used in pipes and tubing. Products made with the new grades can be bent to allow them to adjust to underhood designs, Lutz said.

-US will not implement antidumping duties on PET resins after ITC ruling

The US will not implement antidumping duties on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) imports from five countries, following a negative final determination from the International Trade Commission (ITC).

The US industry is not materially injured or threatened with material injury due to resin imports from Brazil, Indonesia, Korea, Pakistan and Taiwan, the ITC ruled in a unanimous vote on Thursday.

The ITC’s ruling follows a Department of Commerce final determination in September that PET resin imports from the countries were sold in the US at less than fair value rates.

-S Korea September exports of most petrochemicals slump year on year

South Korea’s export volumes of most petrochemicals in September posted double-digit declines, industry data showed.

Its exports of ethylene fell by 27.8% year on year to 70,299 tonnes, while those of propylene declined by 27.0% year on year to 128,298 tonnes, according to data from the Korea International Trade Association (KITA).

September shipments of paraxylene (PX) fell by 27% year on year to 577,543 tonnes, while those of purified terephthalate acid (PTA) were down by 24.8% at 144,116 tonnes.

-Asia benzene/toluene price spread narrows to 2-year low amid benzene glut

The price spread between benzene and its feedstock toluene in Asia narrowed to more than a two-year low of $3.83/mt on Tuesday amid a benzene glut and firmer toluene prices due to tight inventory in East China after the National Day holidays early October, S&P Global Platts data showed.

Healthy benzene/toluene spreads are typically in the $80-$110/mt range, making it very unattractive currently to produce benzene via toluene disproportionation units.

-New method developed to 3D print lithium-ion batteries in nearly any shape

Lithium-ion batteries power everything from smartphones and tablets to e-cigarettes and electric cars. Until now, manufacturers have had to design their devices around standard battery sizes, and it limits the design options and capacities of consumer devices. But researchers, led by Christopher Reyes and Benjamin Wiley have developed a new method to 3D print lithium-ion batteries in virtually any shape. They report their results in ACS Applied Energy Materials.

Most lithium-ion batteries on the market are either rectangular or cylindrical. Theoretically, 3D printing technologies can print an entire device, including the battery and structural and electronic components, in almost any shape. However, the problem that has stood in the way of fully 3D printed lithium-ion batteries is that the the polymers used for 3D printing, such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA), are not ionic conductors. Researchers wanted to find a way to print complete lithium-ion batteries using low cost and widely available fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printers.
