-Breakthrough polymer paves way for truly sustainable bioplastics

Scientists with Tel Aviv University have developed a new method for producing biodegradable polymers that don’t require fresh water or plants.

The technology paves the way for future biodegradable, sustainable plastics that don’t use up vital — and increasingly limited — resources while also addressing the most pervasive pollutants.

At the heart of the technology are microorganisms that feast on seaweed.

-Sustainable ‘Plastics’ Are On The Horizon

A new Tel Aviv University study describes a process to make bioplastic polymers that don’t require land or fresh water — resources that are scarce in much of the world. The polymer is derived from microorganisms that feed on seaweed. It is biodegradable, produces zero toxic waste and recycles into organic waste.

The invention was the fruit of a multidisciplinary collaboration between Dr. Alexander Golberg of TAU’s Porter School of Environmental and Earth Sciences and Prof. Michael Gozin of TAU’s School of Chemistry. Their research was recently published in the journal Bioresource Technology.

WTI crude plunged below $43/bbl on Monday for the first time since June 2017 and has slid more than 40% since early October.

“There is a little bit of over-extension to the downside linked to global market fears,” says Petromatrix analyst Olivier Jakob. “It’s all about equities.”

-Falling Oil Prices May Spark New Debt Crisis

U.S. oil prices at below $50 and now even below $45 a barrel could cause concerns about the debt levels of some energy companies, Nasdaq energy analyst Tamar Essner told CNBC on Wednesday.

“Credit markets have held up a lot better than the energy equity markets right now, so that tells you that credit investors out there believe in the oil story much more so than energy equity investors do right now,” Essner said.

-Monroe County enables sustainable plastic foam recycling

Monroe County recently identified a sustainable solution for recycling plastic foam by purchasing a densifier, which makes disposing the common block packaging material more economical and environmentally friendly.

“For many years, Styrofoam posed a recycling challenge for our environmental services team, until we recently secured a new technology that will now allow us to accept and dispose of Styrofoam more efficiently and effectively,” said Cheryl Dinolfo, county executive. “This holiday season, we encourage residents to bring their clean, white, block Styrofoam directly to the Ecopark rather than placing it in the garbage or a curbside recycling bin. By recycling right, we can continue to keep our community beautiful, enhancing our ability to attract jobs and investment to Monroe County.”

-OUTLOOK ’19: Asia’s benzene to continue struggling with longsupply

A long supply scenario aptlydescribes the Asia benzene market in 2018, asituation unlikely to change in 2019.

With limited outletto the US and other destinations, most of thevolume produced has remained within Asia, andin 2019 ample supply is expected with newcapacity across Asia and the Middle East due tocome on stream.

However, a majority of new downstreamcapacities of key downstream styrene monomer(SM) are also planned to come onstream from2020 and beyond.

This lead and lag between benzene and SMstart-ups is expected to cause temporaryimbalances between demand-supply dynamics in2019.
