MOSCOW – Benzene prices in eastern China dropped at the end of last week, ICIS reported.

So, on May 17, spot quotes for benzene in the region were in the range of 4,480–5,520 yuan (CNY) per ton, dropping by CNY20 per ton in the lower price range and by CNY30 in the upper one.

The unfavorable macroeconomic situation in the market, as well as the downstream market for styrene monomer, had an impact on the Chinese benzene market.

Some sellers have reduced their price offers in an attempt to eliminate stocks of material, which at the beginning of last week put downward pressure on benzene quotes.  A significant increase in the price of crude oil in Europe and the United States received an ambiguous reaction from the Chinese market.

In response, most material suppliers took a wait and froze their price quotes.  However, buying activity on the downstream market was low, and therefore only a few deals were made.Benzene prices EastChina dropped

Benzene is a raw material for the production of styrene, which, in turn, is the main raw material component for the production of polystyrene (PS).

According to the ICIS-MRC Price Review , the cost of the Russian PS remains the same this week.  Manufacturers have not yet reported a possible change in prices in the next month. Benzene prices EastChina dropped

-X-Rite to display new colour formulation software at ITMA25

X-Rite Incorporated and Pantone LLC, global leaders in colour science and technology, will showcase their newly released Color iMatch formulation software for the textile industry, at ITMA from June 20-26 in Barcelona, Spain. The software accelerates recipe creation for textile industry through better initial matches and fewer corrections.

Colour match performance in textiles is a function of how accurately dye behavior in a formula reflects dye behavior under current conditions and processes. Color iMatch improves colour matching rate by up to 50 per cent by addressing this interdependence. It intelligently processes colour data to provide optimal initial colour matches and reduce wasteful formulation attempts. With a high return on investment, Color iMatch streamlines complicated textile workflows, improves formulation efficiency, and reduces material waste, said X-rite in a press release.

-Oil prices: ‘recipe for disaster’

Oil prices slumped more than 5% on Thursday, leaving them poised to record their biggest weekly fall this year. Business Insider reports in its article Oil is nearing its biggest weekly loss this year as demand and trade-war woes combine in a ‘recipe for disaster’ that the decline reflects a cocktail of factors including disappointing American manufacturing data, rising US shale production, softer demand from refineries, and concerns about the US-China trade war’s impact on global economic demand.

“The dangerous combination of surging US crude inventories, weak demand from refineries and rising concerns over US-China trade tensions impacting economic health is creating a recipe for disaster in oil markets,” said Lukman Otunuga, research analyst at FXTM.

Since the start of this week, Brent crude has slumped 6% to around $68.50, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude has dropped more than 7.5% to about $58.60.

Sinopec Group and China National Petroleum Corp., the country’s top state-owned refiners, are halting Iranian oil purchases for loading in May, three people with knowledge of the matter said

BEIJING: China’s crude oil imports from Saudi Arabia rose 43 percent in April, making the Middle Eastern OPEC kingpin once again the top supplier to the world’s second-biggest economy, boosted by demand from new private refiners.

-Oil on pace to have its worst week of 2019

Oil futures struggled for direction on Friday, a day after posting their biggest one-day loss since December, with prices looking to post their worst weekly performance of the year.

Overall, the oil industry has “been resilient to the trade war issues” because of concerns over supply disruptions “and they really thought this trade war [would] not last that long,” said Naeem Aslam, chief market analyst at TF Global Markets.

Oil found some support from gains in global stock markets Friday. U.S. stocks climbed, but traded off the day’s highs, following reports that President Donald Trump may ease up on restrictions against Huawei Technologies Inc. as part of a bigger trade deal with China. -Manufacturers of disposable meal trays are shifting toward the use of biodegradable plastic and corn starch materials

The food or meal trays are used for carrying or economically serving the foods. The disposable meal trays are mostly used due easy to dispose of and no need for cleaning and storing after use.

Disposable meal trays are highly used by fast food restaurants, school, catering services, and takeout restaurants. G

enerally, the disposable meal trays are made up of plastic, paper, and aluminum.

But nowadays owing to environmental awareness about plastic pollution, the biodegradable materials and cornstarch are also accessible to the manufacturing of disposable meal trays.

In the market, disposable meal trays are selling by considering the compartment in trays.Polymers Petrochemicals Sustainable PET

-Recycling demolished concrete waste

Worldwide consumption of concrete is estimated at 20 billion tonnes. To produce such a huge volume of concrete, we need 14 billion tonnes of natural aggregate.

To supply aggregate, it is necessary to cut a huge volume of mountains or dig aggregate quarries.

On the other hand, we are demolishing concrete structures due to deterioration as well as replacement of low-rise buildings by high-rise buildings.

It is estimated that every year the world has to reckon with the problem of disposing of 12 billion tonnes of demolished concrete waste generated from the demolition of buildings and other reinforced concrete infrastructures.

To make construction materials sustainable and to keep our world habitable for the future generations, we need to strike a balance between the demand for aggregate for construction works and the volume of demolished concrete waste.

-Sustainable style and the rise of circular fashion

When luxury fashion brand Burberry admitted to destroying more than $35 million worth of fashion and cosmetic products last year, there was outcry around the world over the amount of wastage created by the fashion industry for the sake of protecting their brand from counterfeits and discounting.

The fashion industry is the second most polluting industry after oil and gas. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), it takes 2,700 litres of water to produce the cotton needed for just one t-shirt; add a single pair of jeans to that and you need 20,000 litres of water in total.  Moreover, the pesticides, fertilisers and chemical dyes and manufacturing methods have polluted the freshwater supplies of hundreds of villages in places like Indonesia where on the banks of the Citarum River are some 400 factories that release toxic chemicals into the river every day.

-Plastic pollution harms vital oxygen-producing bacteria

Plastic pollution has been harming marine creatures large and small, from giant whales to minute bacteria. We care about the whales, but we should also start caring about the bacteria.

“We found that exposure to chemicals leaching from plastic pollution interfered with the growth, photosynthesis and oxygen production of Prochlorococcus, the ocean’s most abundant photosynthetic bacteria,” says Sasha Tetu, a researcher at Macquarie University in Australia who was the lead author of a new study of the effects of plastic pollution on a species of photosynthetic marine bacteria.

Prochlorococcus bacteria are abundant in the oceans where they serve a vital function in global carbon recycling and produce a tenth of the oxygen that land animals like ourselves breathe. These green microbes are the most common photosynthetic organisms on Earth and are key to marine ecosystems owing to their production of carbohydrates and oxygen.

-Japan aims to standardize biodegradable plastic materials

The government plans to launch a public-private initiative to standardize plastic materials that can be degraded by marine microbes, with the aim of promoting such biodegradable materials, according to informed sources.

The move comes as the fight against marine pollution by plastic waste that cannot be degraded in the natural environment is expected to be one of key issues at the Group of 20 summit in Osaka in late June.
