The National Green Tribunal has set up an expert committee to probe whether there is a need for further norms to restrict plastic packaging of food products after a plea has sought a ban on it citing health and environment concerns.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel formed the panel which comprises representatives of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, Bureau of Indian Standards, Central Pollution Control Board and Directorate General of Health Services.
“We are of the opinion that the question whether any further regulatory provisions are required on the subject of restrictions on the packaging by use of plastic material, after the steps already taken, and if so to what extent be examined by an Expert Committee comprising of the representatives of FSSAI, BIS, CPCB and DGHS.
The project ‘cork-a-tex yarn’ – yarn with high incorporation of cork, was awarded with the Techtextil Innovation Award at the recently held Techtextil fair in Frankfurt. The project, a result of close partnership between the Portuguese cork and textile industry, won in the category ‘new material’, one of the 7 categories and considered most important prize.
The award ceremony took place together with the official opening of Techtextil and Texprocess 2019, organised by Messe Frankfurt Exhibition GmbH.

Duvaltex, the market leader in North America for contract textiles, will introduce its new Clean Impact Textiles at NeoCan in Chicago from June 10. This innovation for commercial fabrics will address the daunting problem of how to deal with polyester fabric waste at the end of its useful life, offering both a biological and technical solution.
The three-day NeoCon will showcase commercial design’s response to technological advances, cultural change, and growing ecological consciousness.
This innovative technology allows Duvaltex to create high performance fabrics that are long-wearing in commercial interiors, but that can biodegrade in landfills and wastewater conditions at a rate similar to that of natural fibres (tested under ASTM D5511). This is achieved through the addition of a bio-catalyst in the yarn extrusion process that enables anaerobic digestion in landfill and wastewater treatment conditions.
West Texas Intermediate crude oil has entered a bear market, down 21% from its April high.
Analysts say global growth fears, exacerbated by President Trump’s trade war, are to blame.
The commodity is still positive since the start of 2019, but its sharp downturn in recent weeks underscores the volatility geopolitical uncertainty has injected into global markets.
Polyester giant Far Eastern New Century Corporation (FENC) has acquired US PET recycler Phoenix Technologies, a Texas-based company with annual capacity of 36,000 tonnes. Thermoplastics Petrochemicals Automotive
The deal, conducted through the company’s chemical fibre subsidiary APG Polytech USA Holdings, represents FENC’s latest investment project in North America after it purchased a plant in West Virginia and an R&D centre in Ohio in early 2018, and obtained approval to invest in a plant in Texas at the end of last year. Phoenix is the third production site FENC has acquired in the US over the last 18 months.
Fiat Chrysler has withdrawn its proposal to merge with French automaker Renault — a deal that would have reshaped the global auto industry and helped the carmakers compete in the race for electric and self-driving vehicles.
The company said Wednesday that it “has become clear that the political conditions in France do not currently exist for such a combination to proceed successfully.”
Earlier in the day, Renault (RNLSY) said that the French government had requested its board of directors postpone the vote on the merger.
France, which owns 15% of Renault and is the company’s largest shareholder, had previously indicated that it would support a merger if the companies protected French jobs and auto plants. Thermoplastics Petrochemicals Biodegradability
While the U.K. biopharma industry will likely continue to play a significant role on the global stage, it could have trouble attracting talent, while European firms prepare for a worst-case scenario.
Of the myriad questions that arise from the U.K.’s withdrawal from the European Union, one is the type of role the country will have in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals – in particular whether that role will be diminished or remain as significant as it is today.
At a panel discussion Wednesday at the Biotechnology Innovation Organization’s annual convention in Philadelphia, the predominant view was that the U.K. would continue to have a strong role globally in drug development, including cell and gene therapy, though it may diminish somewhat.
The two automakers will also co-develop a C-segment crossover based on the new EV platform.
Toyota and Subaru will jointly develop a new electric vehicle platform suitable for mid-size and large passenger cars, including sedans and crossovers.
It addition to this, the two Japanese automakers will also use the new EV architecture to develop a new C-segment crossover together, with each brand selling a version of this vehicle. Thermoplastics Petrochemicals Automotive
According to the two companies, the new platform will use Toyota’s electrification technologies, and Subaru’s all-wheel drive expertise. Both car makers will also shift all of their existing electric car development over to this new project.
There has been much belligerent rhetoric and saber-rattling between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the US of late – for example, the announced arrival of a US aircraft carrier to the Gulf area. Many analysts are speculating what will happen if war breaks out between the two.
Not so fast. If the Iranians have their way, they will make sure that tensions fall far short of war.
The leaders of Iran are certainly belligerent toward their neighbors — they harbor ambitions to dominate areas far beyond their borders, including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen — but they are not reckless. Thermoplastics Petrochemicals automotive

Polypropylene (PP) demand for early June contracted volumes is good, but it is not clear how long this will last, given the sharp drop in naphtha prices in the past week.
– Strong June demand for contracted volumes so far
– Naphtha prices slump
– Smaller PP buyers destocking
VARIOUSNaphtha – a leading driver of propylene prices – has fallen around $100/tonne since mid-May, and PP players are counting on this impacting the July contract price if there is no rally. Thermoplastics Petrochemicals automotive
As naphtha prices are taken into account as one of the principal elements when discussing upstream monomer contracts, such a sizeable drop would be hard to ignore.
Asia’s monoethylene glycol (MEG) spot discussions slumped on Thursday, following heavy losses in upstream crude market overnight and amid ongoing concerns over the US-China trade spat.
Offers for H1 June-arrival cargoes were at $523-525/tonne CFR (cost & freight) CMP (China Main Port) against bids at $523/tonne CFR CMP.
For H1/H2 July-arrival cargoes, offers were at $528-530/tonne CFR CMP against bids at $528/tonne CFR CMP.
MEG daily prices were last assessed on 4 June at $535-540/tonne CFR CMP.
New research suggests North Americans eat, drink and inhale tens of thousands of tiny plastic particles every year.
University of Victoria biologist Kieran Cox, whose paper was published Wednesday, says what his study shows most clearly is how little is known about the extent or impact of microplastics in people.
“The last thing I want to do is cause some sort of undue alarm over plastics,” he said.
“But even if we’re considering what I would call a pretty limited literature, we’re getting into hundreds of thousands (of particles) a year.
HDPE prices witnessed a fall this week in Asia. A week on week plunge in crude prices, a tumble in prices of naphtha and a steep fall in ethylene feedstock rates weighed down on Asian HDPE rates. A drop in regional buying interest also contributed toward the price fall. Thermoplastics Petrochemicals Automotive
