-Scientists develop solution processable ferroelectric nylons

Scientists have solved a four decade long challenge of producing very thin nylon films that can be used for instance in electronic memory components. The thin nylon films are several 100 times thinner than human hair and could thus be attractive for applications in bendable electronic devices or for electronics in clothing.

As the microelectronic industry is now shifting toward wearable electronic gadgets and electronic (e-)textiles, the comprising electronic materials, such as ferroelectrics, should be integrated with our clothes. Nylons, a family of synthetic polymers, were first introduced in the 1920s’ for women’s stockings and are nowadays among the most widely used synthetic fibers in textiles. -Coca-Cola Ireland reaches 50% recycled plastic in ‘on-the-go’ bottles

Company says it will further increase use of sustainable materials amid pollution fears

All Coca-Cola Ireland plastic bottles that are 500ml or smaller in size are now being produced with 50 per cent recycled plastic, the soft drinks company has said, while larger bottles have moved to 25 per cent recycled plastic.

The move, made with local bottling partner Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company, comes as consumer goods companies are coming under increasing pressure from customers and environmental groups to lessen plastic pollution.

-NECS claims it is serious about plastic ban

Months after the National Environment Commission Secretariat (NECS) banned single-use plastic carry bags, doma wrappers and ice cream pouches, the market is flooded with various plastic bags.

The NECS secretary and officials of the waste management division conducted a press conference yesterday to reiterate the enforcement and implementation of the plastic ban. Petrochemicals Biodegradable Biochemicals

According to the secretary, Sonam P Wangdi, the current ban was focused on single-use plastic carry bags, doma wrappers, and ice cream pouches but people started using non-woven carry bags and biodegradable plastic bags.

-Warning no-deal Brexit ‘could delay bottle recycling’ scheme

The creation of Scotland’s UK-leading recycling scheme for drinks containers may have to be delayed in the event of a no-deal Brexit, retailers have warned.

The Scottish Retail Consortium (SRC) said shops around the country would have to focus on “more pressing matters” if the UK leaves the EU without an agreement in place.

Under plans announced in May, Scotland is set to become the first part of the UK to introduce a deposit return scheme for drinks containers in an effort to boost recycling rates.

-Edible packaging receives UK government funding

A Lucozade Ribena Suntory-backed edible, plastic-free packaging innovation is taking a step closer to being rolled out on the high-street – thanks to newly secured Government funding.

The capsules, called Oohos, are made entirely from seaweed extract, a material called Notpla™ and offer a way to deliver drinks under 100ml in a plastic-free form. They are not only completely edible but also claim to be naturally biodegrade in four to six weeks – just as quickly as a piece of fruit. Petrochemicals Biodegradable Biochemicals

-How To Make a Better PET Bottle

Automated Blowmolder Control systems help this Mexican converter meet quality, scheduling, and performance targets for its through-the-wall customer.

The PET bottles produced at the Coca-Cola FEMSA plant in Villahermosa, Mexico, in the Gulf Coast state of Tabasco, never touch a carton. Instead, they are filled immediately after blowing, then labeled, capped, palletized, and shrink-wrapped for shipment to big box and convenience stores throughout a sprawling four-state distribution area. This kind of integrated operation is a model of efficiency. But it leaves little margin for error. Production must be robust and nimble to meet the demands of schedules that change weekly. An on-premises agreement with converter ALPLA and the installation of Agr International’s Process Pilot® Automated Blowmolder Control systems in the blowing machines combine to optimize bottle output and quality, making sure Coca-Cola FEMSA’s stringent schedule and performance targets are met. -Fracking claimed to be less contaminating than conventional oil and gas

A study claims that conventional oil and gas production methods can have a greater impact on groundwater than fracking.

High-volume hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, injects water, sand and chemicals under high pressure into petroleum-bearing rock formations to recover previously inaccessible oil and natural gas. This method led to the current shale gas boom that started around 15 years ago.

Conventional methods of oil and natural gas production, which have been in use since the late 1800s, also inject water underground to aid in the recovery of oil and natural gas.

-Infinited Fiber receives lead investment from RGE

Singapore-based RGE Pte Ltd has joined a group of investors including H&M Group, Virala and Fortum to help Infinited Fiber Company Oy (IFC) scale up its technology that turns textile waste and other pulp-based materials into new textile fibres. A strategic co-operation agreement was also signed between RGE and IFC to commercialise the startup’s technology.

Since early 2018, IFC has been operating a 50-ton per annum pilot plant in Espoo, Finland, that produces Infinited Fiber for testing purposes with global brand owners such as H&M, VF Corporation and their manufacturers.

-OPEC cuts non-OPEC crude supply growth forecasts for 2019, 2020

OPEC has revised down its non-OPEC crude oil supply growth estimates for 2019 and 2020 on the back of lower-than-expected output in the US, Brazil, Norway, and Thailand, the cartel said on Friday.

Non-OPEC supply growth expectations fell 72,000 bbl/day for 2019 and 50,000 bbl/day since the group’s last monthly oil report, while OPEC production last month fell 246,000 bbl/day as the global economy continued its decline.

Despite weaker-than-expected US output, the country’s total supply growth for the year is expected to stand at 1.87m bbl/day, representing the bulk of all non-OPEC output hikes.
