Businessman with binocularsBOPET film is one of the fastest growing polymer film substrates, according to a new report from AMI Consulting (Bristol, UK), “BOPET Films—the Global Market.”
Growth is being driven by its extensive use in packaging and technical applications because of its unique combination of properties that include processability, adhesion to coatings and adhesives, and decorative appeal. Capacity is forecast to increase by more than 50% by 2023.
Environmental campaigners are warning that bioplastics and recyclable packaging will not solve the world’s plastics pollution crisis – following a pledge by consumer goods giant Unilever to halve its use of virgin plastics. Circular Economy Polyester Filament
The maker of brands such as Dove soap, Lipton Tea, Hellmann’s mayonnaise and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream this week unveiled “ambitious” plans to knock 100,000 metric tonnes off its new plastics load by 2025 – and to refocus its efforts on reusable packaging and alternative materials.
Consumers are finally starting to view their apparel from a sustainability mindset, even if they struggle to make all their lifestyle choices more responsible.
But people want deeper meaning in how they work, live, and consume.
Their calls for greater transparency and sustainable options are increasing the pressure on brands to design with more considerate products with purpose that make people feel good about their choices.Circular Economy Polyester Filament
The latest capsule from the Lenzing’s new Tencel Sustainable Denim Wardrobe collaboration is centred on environmentally conscious production and how it can influence the denim supply chain for the better.
A Turkish start-up has produced a bacteria, named “PETman,” that can break the molecular bonds of one of the world’s most-used plastics – polyethylene terephthalate, also known as PET or polyester. Circular Economy Polyester Filament
“PETman is a plastic-breaking enzyme that has been produced by taking inspiration from [other] plastic-breaking bacteria and is a result of a DNA transfer to another bacteria that has the capability of giving output in a very fast way. It has been produced with the reprogramming of bacteria genetically,” Begüm Esra Aytan, the founder of the start-up GeneOn, told daily Hürriyet.
Chomarat Group’s composite reinforcements will be featured at the KraussMaffei stand during the next K Messe in Düsseldorf. Circular Economy Polyester Filament
Chomarat has created a glass reinforcement adapted to the mass production of automotive parts, helping to lighten leaf springs by 60% compared to metal.
Automotive: Producing 60% Lighter Leaf Springs for Car’s Underbody
The new leaf springs made of composites are 60% lighter than their pendants made of steel thanks to KraussMaffei process and the involvement of a network of partners, including Chomarat with G-PLY glass reinforcement. Their strength can be deliberately increased in sections where it is required and the corrosion resistance offers further added value.
HONEYWELLHoneywell announced that Ceyhan Polipropilen Uretim A.Ş. will use Honeywell UOP’s C3 Oleflex technology to produce 457,000 metric tons per year (m.t./yr) of polymer-grade propylene for a new petrochemicals complex in Ceyhan, Turkey.
Ceyhan Polipropilen Uretim is a joint venture of Ronesans Holding and the Algerian national energy company Sonatrach S.p.A. Circular Economy Polyester Filament
The new unit will be used to supply propylene for production of polypropylene, which is used to make a wide variety of plastic products that are growing in demand globally.
In Asia, petrochemical trade remains dull as dishwater, days after key market China resumes business post-National Day holidays (1-7 October), largely owing to the fact that buyers are sidelined in a nebulous climate when the trade war seems interminable.
Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter, told OPEC that the kingdom’s oil production in September fell by 660,000 barrels per day (bpd) compared with August to 9.13 million bpd in the wake of attacks on its energy installations.
Secondary sources said Saudi Arabia’s oil production was even lower, falling month-on-month in September by 1.28 million bpd to 8.56 million bpd, OPEC’s monthly report showed.
SOCAR Turkey plans to construct another petrochemical complex in Aliaga town of Izmir province, Anar Mammadov, director general of the Petkim petrochemical complex, said at a press conference for Azerbaijani journalists in Izmir, Trend reports Oct. 10.
Mammadov emphasized that the investment, just like other projects, will have strategic significance.
“With the start of the facility’s operation, the import of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) into Turkey will be stopped,” Mammadov said. “Today it is produced in Turkey only at the PTA factory, which is a part of Petkim. However, the factory can meet only a part of Turkey’s needs.”
Asia’s acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) demand in the fourth quarter – a traditionally slower period for the resin – is softening as the third-quarter manufacturing for exports season is over in key market China.Circular Economy Polyester Filament
Producers remained focused on securing adequate margins for their resins. While margins have improved in recent weeks, they remained below expectations.
Feedstock costs remained elevated, which has continued to pressurize margins of suppliers.
Mexican Legislators Urged to Ban Single-Use Plastics, Microbeads
Microplastics from product packaging and other sources are present in the stomachs of 20 percent of commercially important fish from three regions in Mexico, according to new tests by conservation groups and scientists from prominent Mexican universities.
The tests examined grey snapper, red grouper, white mullet and king mackerel from the Gulf of California, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
One-fifth of the sampled fish contained microplastics — tiny pieces that often come from larger plastic debris as it degrades. Circular Economy Polyester Filament
