-Will Oil Become a Weapon of Choice for Iran?

Events in 2019 served as a reminder for just how vulnerable the world’s oil supply is, and Iran was usually blamed as the culprit for attacks on ships, pipelines and processing plants in the Middle East.

But the knock-on effects blew over quickly in a world that appeared oblivious to the geopolitics of oil.

Now in the wake of the U.S. killing of Qassem Soleimani, the Iranian general who led the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds force, the big question hanging over the market is whether Iran will target oil in its response.

-Lenzing and Duratex to jointly build world-scale dissolving wood-pulp plant in Brazil

The Lenzing Group (Lenzing, Austria; and Duratex, the largest producer of industrialized wood panels in the southern hemisphere, announce that they will jointly build a 500,000-ton dissolving wood-pulp plant in the State of Minas Gerais, near Sao Paulo (Brazil).

The startup is planned for the first half of 2022. In the joint venture related to this plant, Lenzing holds a 51%, Duratex a 49% stake.

The expected industrial CAPEX will be approx. $1.3 billion (based on current exchange rates and customary tax refunds).

The project is financed through long-term debt. The corresponding financing contracts are expected to be concluded at the end of the first quarter of 2020.

-Polyamide homes in on EV cooling systems

Solvay Performance Polyamides’ Technyl Blue range, which the company claims is the market reference for thermal management, has been augmented with new grades specifically designed for electric vehicle (EVs/HEVs).

Based on polyamide (PA) 66 and 610 polymer technology, these new materials address both injection molding for parts in cooling circuits and air-conditioning systems, which also benefit from the brand-new extrusion range.

-PE sorting is enhanced with ‘deep learning’ technology

Tomra Sorting Recycling has launched a feature to help boost capabilities of optical sorters in the company’s Autosort line.

The GAIN product is a system that applies “deep learning-based sorting technology” to enhance existing sortation equipment.

According to Tomra, the GAIN system classifies objects “based on sensor data,” which means it uses a camera and identifies materials based on the image.

And the technology’s “deep learning” ability means the image identification gets better over time.

-Oil jumps with escalation of tension in Gulf

Crude price may not go above $70 a barrel

WITH the news of USA-Iran tensions, oil prices have jumped to above $69 per barrel, raising speculations of how high the oil price will reach or when the tension will cease in the oil-rich region that produces more than 20 million barrels a day.

This leaves the speculators pushing the oil prices to new level, but not like the previous years. This time, the impact on oil prices will not be that great.

It may not go above $70 a barrel. USA now is out of the oil formula with its own domestic production of conventional and shale oil that has hit a production level of 13 million barrels and made USA one among the biggest producers, ahead of Russia and Saudi Arabia.

-Plastics recycling technology roundup

Plastics Recycling Update iconA reclaimer is recovering polyamide from multi-layer films via a solvent-based process, and additive companies release products to boost recycled polyamide and PP.

Polyamide processing equipment: German reclaimer APK says melt processing equipment from Nordson Corporation is helping it produce high-quality polyamide resin out of multi-layer film scrap feedstock. APK in June opened a plant in Merseburg, Germany, using a process the company calls “Newcycling.” That facility, which has a capacity of over 17 million pounds per year, uses a solvent-based process to separate PE and polyamide in post-industrial multi-layer packaging films.

-Why oil could hit $80 even without a ‘full-blown’ U.S.-Iran war

It’s always useful to have a sense of Middle Eastern history, as financial markets swirled following the news of the U.S. airstrike that killed a prominent Iranian general in Baghdad.

So let’s go way back to…September, when an unprecedented drone attack on Saudi Arabia oil processing facilities cut the country’s production in half.

Crude-oil futures BRN00, +0.15%  shot up some $8 a barrel, the largest one-day rise in history, and analysts speculated that prices could climb further. Within days, however, those gains were erased, and investors became comfortable enough with the security situation that Saudi Aramco 2222, +0.14%  later in the year was even able to go public.
