-U.A.E. Company Produces Mideast’s First Plant-Based Bottles

A Middle Eastern drinking-water company is producing the region’s first bottles made entirely from fermented plant sugars.Chemicals Biodegradable Bioplastic

Agthia Group, which markets the Al Ain brand of drinking water, plans to distribute its first shipment of water in the biodegradable containers within a few months, Chief Executive Officer Tariq Ahmed Al Wahedi said in an interview. The Abu Dhabi-based company is in talks with potential buyers across the United Arab Emirates including hotels, restaurants and government agencies, he said.

Agthia makes the new bottles from corn sugars, which it processes into a resin and molds like plastic. It fashions the bottle caps from fermented sugar cane. The plant-based materials can decompose in as little as 80 days, Al Wahedi said in Dubai, the second-biggest emirate in the U.A.E. after Abu Dhabi.

-The Russian economy expects an increase in food prices and an increase in waste after the introduction of a ban on polymer packaging

The Russian economy is expected to increase prices for dairy products, meat and fish, groceries and bakery products by almost 10%, as well as a large-scale increase in the volume of food and paper waste after the ban on polymer packaging, Kommersant reports citing research by scientists of the Higher School of Public Administration (HSHA) of Moscow State University M.V. Lomonosov.

The ban on packages from the checkout area will not give unambiguous positive results: the implementation of this scenario may reduce the volume of polymer packaging waste by 2024, but will lead to a serious increase in paper waste (by 1.15 million tons the next year after the ban was introduced).

-VEOLIA TO SUPPLY CHLORIDE-REMOVAL SYSTEM FOR PULP PLANT IN BRAZIL

Veolia Water Technologies (www.veoliawatertechnologies.com) will support a major expansion of a mill in Brazil by providing a turnkey chloride removal system designed to optimize the processing of wood-derived pulp used in the making of cellulose fibers.

The pulping production uses a washing and cleaning process to increase the purity of the pulp. The resulting product of this process is a liquid stream that is rich in organics for energy production. Chemicals Biodegradable Bioplastic

This liquor, however, requires careful management and removal of chemicals to avoid the undesired build-up of chloride and potassium in the recovery cycle, which if left uncontrolled, can create corrosion and boiler fouling.

-Malaysia is not Asia’s top ocean plastic polluter

Following from the recent headlines in the media claiming that Malaysia is the top plastic ocean polluter in Asia, we would like to clarify that we are disappointed with the inaccurate and misleading headlines of these articles.Chemicals Biodegradable Bioplastic

The report cited in the articles, entitled “Plastic Packaging in Southeast Asia and China”, only states that Malaysia ranked the highest among the six countries studied in the report in terms of annual per capita plastic packaging consumption, at 16.78 kg per person.

But this high-level consumption does not translate to highest polluter. We would like to reiterate that there is no data or findings in the report which support these headlines.

MOSCOW- The Russian economy is expected to increase prices for dairy products, meat and fish, groceries and bakery products by almost 10%, as well as a large-scale increase in the volume of food and paper waste after the ban on polymer packaging, Kommersant reports citing research by scientists of the Higher School of Public Administration (HSHA) of Moscow State University M.V. According to market participants, the annual turnover of plastic bags is about 167 thousand tons, about 83 billion pieces, the study says, “thus, the number of paper bags that need to be additionally brought to the market is about 28 billion pieces per year (if a third replace with paper counterparts). ”

The share of food waste in the composition of MSW now reaches 28% (from 17 million to 19 million tons per year). In the case of the introduction of a complete ban on plastic packaging, according to the Higher School of Civil Aviation, this share may increase significantly (up to 17% of the existing volume).Russian economy polymer packaging

At the same time, researchers predict an increase in prices for basic food products (dairy products, meat and fish, dried fruits, groceries and bakery products) by 9.5%.

The report explains that the proportion of flexible polymer packaging in the weight of packaged products is 0.5–3%. For cardboard packaging, this indicator can be 3–15%, and for glass containers – up to 40–50%.

VSHGA proposes not to refuse plastic packaging, but to control its use: introduce requirements for the minimum content of recyclables, as well as gradually increase the recycling rate to 100%. Russian economy polymer packaging

The Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Rospotrebnadzor support the idea of phasing out and phasing out certain types of disposable and difficult to process goods, containers and packaging, but not through prohibitions.

Earlier it was reported that the Ministry of Natural Resources plans to oblige manufacturers and importers of all types of packaging, oils and batteries to process 100% of the products sold from next year.
