Under the umbrella of Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS), Tomra, a recognised leader in waste collection via deposit systems and sorting, has recently completed tests revealing that polystyrene is one of the best plastics for both recycling and sorting.
With Tomra’s near-infrared (NIR) sensor technology, post-consumer plastic waste was sorted in a multi-step process, including initial sorting from post-consumer waste, grinding into smaller flakes, washing, drying and flake sorting. The resulting purity of PS turned out to be higher than 99.9%.Chemicals Biodegradable Bioplastic PEF
Reports of increased recycling rates, particularly of PET bottles, are showing success in closing the loop. The latest report from sustainability consultancy Eunomia, in collaboration with the European Federation of Bottled Water (EFBW), Petcore Europe, and Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), projects a strong trend toward the use of recycled PET (rPET) thanks to increased demand.
The combination of significant improvements in recycling processes and increased quality of materials could result in rPET accounting for as much as 55% of total PET demand by 2030.Chemicals Biodegradable Bioplastic PEF
Today, fresh as well as convenience food is sold in packages and the hygienic conditions, long shelf life and easy availability of these packaged products are part of our modern lifestyle. However, the result is significant environmental impacts and pollution due to the plastic materials associated with the packaging.
One answer to plastics in packaging are biodegradable materials, on the market for many years and their market share continues to grow. But there are severe restrictions preventing their wider application in food packaging, as these materials do not provide a sufficient barrier against water vapour, oxygen or flavours.Chemicals Biodegradable Bioplastic PEF
For industry professionals and others, this is an exceptionally interesting period in plastics and packaging.
The accelerating, ever-changing landscape in these markets yields presents numerous hurdles met by an continuing wave of technical innovation. The result is a kind of yin and yang dualism—opposite or contrary forces that may actually be complementary, interconnected and interdependent in the natural world Chemicals Biodegradable Bioplastic PEF
