HeiQ, winner of the Swiss Technology Award and Swiss Environmental Award, launches HeiQ Viroblock NPJ03, an antiviral and antimicrobial textile treatment that is tested effective against coronavirus.
Since its inception 15 years ago, HeiQ has forged a solid innovation track record helping brands improve textile products. Catalyzed to action by the global fight against Coronavirus, HeiQ launches HeiQ Viroblock NPJ03, an antiviral and antimicrobial textile treatment which is proven effective against human coronavirus (229E) in face mask testing, significantly enhancing the antiviral log reduction from 2.90 of untreated face masks to 4.48, over 99.99% reduction of virus infectivity. (Remarks: a log reduction of 2 is equivalent to 100 times the effectiveness.)
Wednesday is the world recycling day. One of those appointments where budgets are usually made: “According to Conai’s first estimates, in 2019 Italy sent 71.2% of packaging waste to recycling”, explains Giorgio Quagliuolo, president of the National Packaging Consortium, which brings together six supply chain consortia: paper, plastic, glass, wood, aluminum and steel. Altogether 800 thousand companies producing and using packaging. “We have far exceeded the European target for 2025 – he explains – which is 65%, and with all our consortia also the supply chain targets, with the exception still of plastic but five years are missing and we will do it”.
So the system works? Yet in March 2019 the EU Court sentenced Italy for 44 landfills out of the norm or adequate late.
“The recovery and recycling of packaging, works. The EU circular economy rules stipulate that by 2035 no more than 10% of waste in general can be disposed of in landfills. Separate collection is needed and waste treatment plants are needed. Italy is divided into two on this: the North has plants for the treatment of all materials, in the South there are few, for example there are none for the wood. The cause is related to the well-known Nimby phenomenon, an acronym for not in my backyard, that is, nothing in my garden. Citizens don’t want plants near their home. ” Petrochemicals Bioeconomy Bioplastics
What about politicians?
«Politics most often follows. But the story of zero waste is a fairy tale that does not exist. With current technologies there is always a share of waste that cannot be recycled. But this does not mean that it must end up in landfills. Current waste-to-energy plants can transform that waste into heat and energy. If in Copenhagen, where environmental sensitivity is far more rooted and ancient than ours, they have a waste-to-energy plant on whose roof they ski, it means that there is no danger to health “.
How do you close the circle of the circular economy?
“The circular economy and the integrated waste cycle are resolved with an adequate plant structure. Over 40% of plastic is not recyclable. But it can become a secondary solid waste to feed cement factories with a reduction in emissions compared to pet coke, a product derived from petroleum, currently in use. But rules are needed that allow this use in higher percentages than the current ones “.
You’ve probably heard that our oceans have become a plastic soup. But in fact, of all the plastic that enters Earth’s oceans each year, just 1% has been observed floating on the surface.
So where is the rest of it?
This “missing” plastic has been a longstanding scientific question. To date, the search has focused on oceanic gyres such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the water column (the part of the ocean between the surface and the sea bed), the bottom of the ocean, and the stomachs of marine wildlife.
But our new research suggests ocean plastic is being transported back onshore and pushed permanently onto land away from the water’s edge, where it often becomes trapped in vegetation. Petrochemicals Bioeconomy Bioplastics

In light of the worldwide spread of COVID-19 and after heavy analysis in collaboration with event stakeholders, including our partners at ATME-I and co-producers at SPESA, we have collectively decided to postpone Techtextil North America and Texprocess Americas.
Up until this point, we were optimistic that May was far enough away to proceed with the events as planned. Petrochemicals Bioeconomy Bioplastics
However, as the situation has evolved, we feel that we must act in the best interest of our exhibitors, visitors, and the industry overall.
In the circular economy, there is a growing need for durability in product packaging. Not only could a model of packaging reuse help the environment, but, when done right, could also be financially effective for manufacturers.
The term “circular economy” is gaining traction as of late, as people around the world realize the linear economy of take, make, dispose—which for decades has been a mainstream mindset for many people—has created a massive amount of waste that is destroying the environment. The circular economy is a closed-loop system that regenerates resources through reuse, refurbishing, and recycling.
Austrian fibres producer Lenzing on Thursday reported a 22% slump in 2019 profit due to a drop in prices and lower standard fibre volumes and said it expects its 2020 results to fall further.
Net profit decreased to 114.9 million euros ($129.8 million) on 3% lower revenues of 2.11 billion euros in 2019, the group said.Petrochemicals Bioeconomy Bioplastics
It said it plans to lower its 2019 dividend to 1 euro per share from 5 euros per share the previous year.
It’s just become a lot harder to make long-term investment decisions in the oil industry. And no, I’m not talking about the need to transition to a low-carbon economy, or the backlash from climate activists and investors. Any veneer of certainty about the future path of oil prices has evaporated.Petrochemicals Bioeconomy Bioplastics
This is the second time in six years that Saudi Arabia has embarked on a pump-at-will oil production policy that has hammered prices. Whether it’s aimed at Russia or the U.S. shale sector, producers everywhere — from OPEC members such as Angola to corporate behemoths like Exxon Mobil Corp. — have been warned that they can no longer count on the kingdom to keep a floor under oil prices.
The European Commission has just published the new Circular Economy Action Plan. We believe that – in contrast to its coal-based energy sector – Poland’s starting position for a transition towards a resource-efficient economy is much better than for energy transformation. And the country could become a leader in implementing circular solutions
The European Commission (EC) is firmly sticking to the timeline of the European Green Deal and has just published the new Circular Economy Action Plan.
Once in a while, we’re reminded that all of our plans and aspirations are dependent on basic conditions and assumptions that remain invisible – until they are threatened.
The world has watched the spread of the coronavirus largely in a state of powerless concern.Petrochemicals Bioeconomy Bioplastics
As cases rise in every continent and more and more countries take increasingly drastic measures to control the spread, no one can authoritatively predict the full impact or duration of the Covid-19 pandemic.
What does it mean for packaging and FMCG?
Tim Sykes talks to Alexander Baumgartner, CEO of Constantia Flexibles, to hear his frank thoughts about how the industry can move forward in the most sustainable manner.
TS: In the flexibles business, there’s always this dichotomy between the focus on packaging waste that we’re seeing very fiercely across Europe and, on the other hand, the resource efficiency and the low carbon footprints that it gives rise to.
Is the current focus on plastic waste maybe created a little bit unfairly by the wider society when you consider the environmental footprint you actually have as a company? Petrochemicals Bioeconomy Bioplastics

The European Commission has placed packaging and plastic at the heart of its Circular Economy Action Plan, which was unveiled Wednesday.
The plan, part of the European Green Deal, addresses key areas in a bid to drive sustainable growth.
The areas, which include electronics and ICT, batteries and vehicles, packaging, plastics, textiles, construction and buildings, and food, will all have an impact on plastics use in Europe.Petrochemicals Bioeconomy Bioplastics
