In just two thirds of April 2020, nylon market has undergone two major waves, during which, the development of nylon 6 semi-dull high-speed spinning chip (hereinafter referred as HS chip) and bright conventional spinning chips (hereinafter referred as CS chip) are completely different.
- In early April, a round of intensive bottom hunting in nylon 6 CS chip market had driven prices higher quickly. And in the process of rapid rise, there were still buying orders that continued to chase highs. CS chip market rose sharply all the way, up by 1,500yuan/mt in just 10 days. Following this, CS chip plants replenished CPL spot aggressively, pushing up CPL spot substantially as well.
- In early April, under the favorable support of the soaring crude oil and CS chip prices, the spot and contract CPL prices gradually increased. Due to cost pressures, sellers also increased semi-dull HS chip prices appropriately. But downstream buyers followed up slowly. Since the uptrend almost ended around Apr 12, spot CPL market also slowed down rising up.
Italy’s Minister of the Economy, Roberto Gualtieri, has announced the postponement of a proposed €450/tonne tax on virgin plastic until 2021, the country’s media reported today.
The proposed tax was due to come into effect on 1 July, and would have applied to all virgin plastic with the exception of recycled plastics and compostable bioplastics.

When you think of outdoor furniture, roads, bollards, fences, patio decking and even footbridges you might not realise that a growing number of these items are made incorporating ‘soft plastics’ as a way to recycle flexible packaging and materials that have no home at this moment in the current kerbside recycling systems in Australia.
On July 1, 2021, a deposit on small plastic bottles will be introduced in the Netherlands. State Secretary Stientje van Veldhoven has agreed this with the packaging industry. Per bottle (<1 liter) a 15 cent deposit will be charged. For large bottles (> 1 liter) it remains 25 cents. Petrochemicals PET Polyamide POY
You can hand in at supermarkets, at train stations, at roadside petrol stations and via caterers. This measure should lead to much less plastic litter. Producers of soft drink and water bottles are responsible for introducing the deposit system. Hospitality and small businesses are exempt from the obligation to collect small plastic bottles.
The French government will tighten restrictions on foreign investments from outside Europe in French companies to limit foreign control over strategic sectors and technologies, the finance minister said on Wednesday.
Currently non-European investments in French companies do not need government approval as long as the stake is 25% or less. Petrochemicals PET Polyamide POY
Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said he would lower the threshold to 10% for investments in large companies until end of the year.
A new report from Wood Mackenzie shows that olefins production losses in Asia have reached historical highs as a result of regional lockdowns in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak. Petrochemicals PET Polyamide POY
In Asia about 58% of the production of olefins – ethylene and propylene is integrated with refineries, either through steam crackers integrated with refineries, or refinery purification of propylene. Regional refinery operation cuts have therefore had a significant impact on olefins production.
Wood Mackenzie principal analyst Catherine Tan said: “We estimate about 496 kilo-tonnes (Kt) of ethylene and 533 Kt of propylene production capacity to be lost between January and May as a result of declining refinery utilisation rates, and coronavirus containment measures across Asia. This is in addition to outages from planned maintenances.”
Colors & Effects has developed Sicopal Black K 0098 FK for smart recycling of dark plastics, which is a sustainable alternative replacing carbon black.
Recyclability is a decisive factor for plastics design and when coloured with carbon black, plastics go undetected by waste sorting machines. Petrochemicals PET Polyamide POY
Traces of carbon black can hinder the near infrared (NIR) sorting of polymer scrap due to the pigments absorbing properties. Consequently, the plastic cannot be detected for further recycling and the waste will be incinerated or landfilled.
Malaysia’s decision to allow some manufacturing operations to resume full capacity may not have much impact yet on the country’s polyethylene (PE) sector because downstream demand remains generally very weak.
According to local media, Malaysia has eased some of the restrictions imposed during the earlier stages of its Movement Control Order (MCO) and the government has allowed some companies, which previously had operating rates capped at 50%, to increase output back to full capacity. These companies include converters or plastic packaging producers in the PE industry. Petrochemicals PET Polyamide POY
However, despite the approval to raise operating rates, the key hurdle was that downstream demand for PE products had not shown any major improvement, industry players in Malaysia said.
“Some converters are allowed to ramp up production but generally demand is still very weak,” said a source.
Andaltec has launched the R&D Project “BioNanocel”, aimed at developing biobased active plastic packaging manufactured with cellulose obtained from vegetal biomass.
This initiative aspires to produce sustainable plastic material for the food industry, with enhanced properties. It will reuse vegetal biomass waste derived from the agricultural activity, which is usually squandered. Petrochemicals PET Polyamide POY
Researchers at Andaltec are already working to synthesise biodegradable and compostable plastics, which will be employed as raw materials for food packaging.
The WITTMANN Group companies have made special challenges due to the corona virus pandemic.
In order to contribute to the global crisis management and even so to keep in touch with customers, the necessary measures were taken.
Wherever possible, activities have been moved to the home office and currently no visits of its production facilities are taking place.
Nevertheless, the production operations in some of the plants are kept up so far.
As of April 28th the production plants in Hungary and China continue their production without any limitation. Petrochemicals PET Polyamide POY
