The polymer nanocomposites market is estimated to witness significant growth on account of increasing developments made in electronic & automobile industry. Its exceptional physical and thermal characteristics make it an ideal material for automotive manufacturing.
It is generally used in automotive components like windows, headlamp covers, engine & inverter covers, tires, coatings, and body panels. However, it has found new application as a light-weight material in the automotive sector, helping manufacturers to develop vehicles with improved performance and fuel efficiency.
Novozymes says its net profits for the second quarter of 2020 dropped 28% year on year (YOY), to 646 million Danish krone (USD102 million) on 3% YOY lower sales, to DKr3.35 billion, according to Chemweek. Petrochemicals CircularEconomy PET Textile
EBITDA and EBIT also declined 24% and 27%, to DKr1.17 billion and DKr867 million, respectively. The disproportional fall in profits this year is mainly attributed to a decrease in other operating income, which in 2019 included the recognition of DKr287 million in deferred income related to the termination of the BioAg alliance and DKr153 million in proceeds from the divestment of a pharma-related royalty, the company says.
“The pandemic is still very present, and we continue to take all necessary measures to keep our employees safe, protect the business, and maintain our ability to supply our customers. But as countries and economies carefully reopen, we now reinstate our 2020 outlook with an organic sales performance of -2% to +2%, an EBIT margin of around 26% including much weaker currency effects, and free cash flow before acquisitions of DKr2.4-2.8 billion,” says Ester Baiget, president and CEO at Novozymes.
The company plans to develop a plastics recovery facility to separate and sort residential, commercial and industrial plastics in Erie, Pennsylvania.
International Recycling Group (IRG), a privately held startup company based in Erie, Pennsylvania, plans to build a large plastics recycling plant in Erie. According to an announcement on International Recycling Group’s website, Erie Insurance and The Plastek Group, Erie, have invested $9 million in the facility.Petrochemicals CircularEconomy PET Textile
Erie Insurance is investing in the new IRG plant through its Opportunity Zone Fund based on the company meeting predevelopment progress milestones, IRG reports. Separately, Plastek has purchased an equity stake in IRG’s parent company, GreenSteel LLC.
IRG says its facility in Erie will be a mega-sized, all-plastics “SuperPRF” (plastics recovery facility), and the Erie Insurance Opportunity Zone investment will support plant development, including engineering design, site selection and contract work.
Veolia’s latest Sustainability strategy – Impact 2023 has taken a key step in the growing success of the circular economy in the UK. Petrochemicals CircularEconomy PET Textile
Currently managing over 2 million tonnes of reclaimed material the company is now aiming to expand its pioneering new technologies that lower resource use.
Backed by a planned multi-million pound investment by 2022, this commitment adds to the £2 billion already invested in new infrastructure across the UK.
As the driving force behind this change Veolia has also achieved significant firsts from investment in R&D, which has enabled the recycling of 350 million plastic milk bottles, more than 120 million cups, and processing of 178,000 discarded TVs and monitors.
Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has developed a new range of MDI polyether prepolymers containing renewable, bio-based raw materials. Marketed under the brand name Adiprene Green. Petrochemicals CircularEconomy PET Textile
The products are suitable as replacement for existing fossil-based polyether prepolymers to manufacture highly durable polyurethane (PU) elastomers.
The overall objective was to create a range of bio-based prepolymers which allow the PU processor to produce components with a reduced CO2 footprint. Depending on the system, a reduction of CO2 between 20-30% is possible compared to fossil-based prepolymers due to the use of polyether polyols based on starch.
US President Donald Trump has again called into question the future of trade talks with Beijing, despite a recent surge in US crude shipments to China under the countries’ phase-one trade deal. Petrochemicals CircularEconomy PET Textile
Trump said late yesterday that he postponed scheduled talks to review the trade agreement because of his anger over how China handled the Covid-19 outbreak.
“I postponed talks with China… I don’t want to deal with them now,” Trump said. Asked if he would pull out of the trade deal, Trump said: “We’ll see what happens.”
Under the terms of the phase-one deal, US and Chinese representatives were scheduled to hold a review six months after the agreement took effect in mid-February.
Autonomous driving and car sharing are becoming more and more important and are transforming the car interior into a living and working space. Plastics, with their low weight and shape, are the material of choice for making the new ‘living space’ functional. But the collaboration between Covestro, Dr Schneider Unternehmensgruppe and Engel is going one step further. Petrochemicals CircularEconomy PET Textile
By using so-called continuous fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites, the components can be made not only lighter and slimmer, but also with a high-quality design.
A modular table system, dubbed the ‘lightweight table’, was developed for the ‘autonomotive’ cars of the future by Covestro as manufacturer of the thermoplastic materials; Engel Austria as supplier of machine and process technology; and the Dr Schneider Unternehmensgruppe as a tier one supplier to the automotive industry.
Braskem, the largest polyolefins producer in the Americas and leading producer of biopolymers in the world, announces its participation as a founding member and funding partner of the Polypropylene Recycling Coalition, a new initiative of The Recycling Partnership, said the company. Braskem”s collaboration within the Polypropylene Recycling Coalition will focus on increasing curbside recycling access for polypropylene (PP) to ensure this critical packaging material is widely recovered and reused in end-markets including food and beverage packaging, consumer products and automotive parts.
Geoffrey Inch, Braskem”s North America Sustainability Director, states, “As the North American leader in polypropylene, Braskem is committed to strengthening the recycling and circularity of polypropylene. In addition to a financial commitment, Braskem is also bringing our technical expertise and market knowledge to drive necessary improvements in the U.S. recycling infrastructure for recovering polypropylene.
Repsol (Madrid, Spain) and mechanical recycling specialist Acteco say they are partnering on a project to increase the production capacity for recycled polyolefins at Acteco’s existing facility in Alicante, Spain. No investment figure has been given, said Chemweek.
Recycled polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) from the plant will be used in Repsol’s circular polyolefins plastics range, which incorporates a percentage of mechanically recycled materials and is designed for high-value applications and high technical requirements, it says. Repsol has previously set itself a target of recycling the equivalent of 20% of its polyolefins production by 2030, and says it has now launched more than 200 circular economy initiatives to reduce its carbon intensity.
The Flake Scan analysis system from Sesotec GmbH captures data that can be quickly leveraged to determine the purity of plastic flakes and regrind.
The quality of plastic flakes and regrind is crucial in determining whether plastics processors and manufacturers can profitably use and sell plastic recyclate.
Depending on how the recyclate will be used, elaborate manual, visual, or thermal sample analyses are often necessary in order to assess the quality of a batch of materials.
Sample analyses are also used as a means of evaluating the effectiveness of the recycling sorting process. Such sample analyses are hardly representative, however, and require additional resources, cost, and time. Petrochemicals CircularEconomy PET Textile
