-Asia naphtha markets to stay buoyant on consistent demand, tight supply

Asia naphtha markets are poised to draw support from a combination of steady downstream demand and potentially crimped supply on reduced deep-sea western cargo flows.

Demand and supply dynamics were seen as relatively balanced, with consistent demand for petrochemical production lending market support.

Depending on the grade, light naphtha demand for downstream olefins production is expected to stay healthy. This coincides with snug supply availability on the back of reduced upstream refinery run rates and arbitrage flows to the east that are anticipated to be lower.

A string of hurricanes in the US has curtailed production and firmer freight costs may well deter deep-sea cargo flows to Asia, if not already.

-Call it by its name: Synthetic gas and oil from old plastics is not ‘recycling’, it’s ‘recovery’

The term “chemical recycling” should only be used for plastic waste reconverted into new plastics. If those plastics are transformed into fuels or petrochemical products, the process should be called “recovery” instead, write Shanar Tabrizi and Fanny Rateau.

Shanar Tabrizi is a chemical recycling and plastics-to-fuel policy officer at Zero Waste Europe. Fanny Rateau is a waste programme manager at ECOS, the European Environmental Citizens’ Organisation for Standardisation.Petrochemicals Automotive Antibacterial

What’s in a name? Shakespeare wrote that changing what a rose is called does not change what it is in essence. The same logic goes for the term ‘chemical recycling’.

-Alberta announces plans to export hydrogen by 2040

Alberta will look to use its plentiful natural gas reserves to become an exporter of hydrogen, a clean-burning fuel, by 2040, Premier Jason Kenney said on Tuesday.

The pandemic has hit Alberta’s oil industry hard, as travel restrictions crushed demand for fuel. The province’s struggles date back years, however, as the oil sands’ high emissions made it a target for environmental activists and have led to some investors, banks and insurers cutting ties with the industry.Petrochemicals Automotive Antibacterial

“The potential for hydrogen is huge,” Kenney said, adding that Alberta could potentially produce among the lowest-cost hydrogen in the world. “Putting Alberta on the global hydrogen map now as this energy source is beginning to gain prominence, will be crucial for us to be at the forefront of future changes in energy.”

-Crèdit Agricole Leasing Italia and NextChem together for the development of the Circular Economy

Crédit Agricole Leasing Italia confirms its commitment to promoting sustainable initiatives by supporting NextChem, the Maire Tecnimont Group company for the energy transition, in the activities of the subsidiary MyReplast Industries, a company specialised in plastic waste Upcycling. Crédit Agricole Leasing Italia financed a leasing plan to purchase innovative equipment and machinery aimed at further increasing the production performance of the entire Upcycling process.Petrochemicals Automotive Antibacterial

MyReplast Industries is a Maire Tecnimont Group company, owned by NextChem and situated within the “Circular Economy” cluster on company’s the roadmap to the energy transition . The company recycles plastic waste through the use of NextChem’s proprietary MyReplastTM technology, which is capable of separating the different polymers present in the plastic waste in a technically sophisticated way and obtaining, through a compounding (chemical transformation) phase, granulates of high-quality recycled plastics that can replace virgin plastics in various application sectors.

-Mechanized recycling – from pants to car seats

The German company imat-uve is working on an industrial solution for the recycling of old clothes made of composite fibers, which up to now have mostly been disposed of rather than recycled.Petrochemicals Automotive Antibacterial

According to one of the statistics from the German Federal Association for Secondary Raw Materials and Disposal (BSVE), 10.01 metric tons of old clothes, and new clothes that have never been worn, invariably end up in the trash every year. Most of this is incinerated or processed into low-quality non-wovens, as there is no way to recycle the fabrics back into high-quality materials. The composite textiles cannot simply be separated out again. Or, when this can be achieved, it is only through elaborate, chemical (and therefore not very environmentally friendly) processes.

-China’s Ningbo unveils refining, petchem aspirations

East China’s Ningbo city in Zhejiang province has released an ambitious development plan for a large-scale refining and petrochemical base, pitting it against neighbouring Zhoushan.

The local government plans to develop Ningbo into a major green refining and petrochemical base with 1.2mn b/d of refining, 10mn t/yr of alkene, 8.5mn t/yr of paraxylene (PX) and 1.5mn t/yr of methyl diphenyl isocyanate (MDI) capacity by 2025.

Ningbo currently has 620,000 b/d of refining capacity, 1.3mn t/yr of ethylene, 7mn t/yr of purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and 1.2mn t/yr of MDI capacity, according to local government data. Sinopec’s 460,000 b/d Zhenhai and fellow state-controlled CNOOC’s 160,000 b/d Daxie plants make up the existing refining capacity, which both are already planning to expand.Petrochemicals Automotive Antibacterial

-Accelerated sector transformation ups pressure on policy makers – Newsletter Editorial October 2020

An overview compiled by CLEPA of announced job cuts by automotive suppliers and vehicle manufacturers since March, when the COVID-19 crisis hit Europe, indicates that some 100,000 jobs in the automotive sector will be lost in the coming year, of which 49,500 to automotive suppliers.Petrochemicals Automotive Antibacterial

This illustrates how the COVID crisis has accelerated the change in the automotive sector, which ups the pressure on policy makers to find the right approach to managing the green and digital transformation.

In addition to cuts to its workforce, industry is also being required to reduce investment in R&D, further impairing the ability to shape the change and achieve the climate and digital goals. This is a real problem because the global leadership of the sector role depends on innovative technologies and manufacturing excellence.

-EconCore proud to be key partner of sustainable concept LUCA car

EconCore is pleased to be a major partner of an innovative project to build a car made entirely out of recycled materials which was launched today (8th October) by the TU/ecomotive team at Eindhoven University of Technology.

The concept car is a lightweight, electric vehicle designed and built by students.

The rationale behind the project is to demonstrate that waste can be a valuable resource, while gaining business, engineering and manufacturing skills and experience.

Wouter Winant, technical manager at EconCore said: “We’ve been involved with this project for the last four years now and each year our involvement has increased.

We’re delighted to be supporting the TU/ecomotive team as we share similar values in terms of using technology to produce sustainable products and minimise waste.

Through innovation, we can create much more sustainable solutions and the Luca car project demonstrates that in such a clever way.”  Petrochemicals Automotive Antibacterial

-Significant risk of EU missing plastic recycling targets

The European Court of Auditors (ECA) has assessed a significant risk that the EU will not meet its plastic packaging recycling targets for 2025 and 2030.

The report, which was released on Tuesday, highlights that changes to the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD), which was updated as part of the European Comissions’ adoption of its plastic strategy in 2018, could see current reported plastic packaging recycling rates of 42% across EU member states revised down to 30%.

Current reported recycling rates are “far from being accurate or comparable across Member States,” the report concludes.Petrochemicals Automotive Antibacterial

It also highlights that impending changes to the ‘Basel Convention’ which from 2021 will see strict restrictions come in to force on the export of plastic waste. It argues that, at present, member states are reliant on waste exports to non-EU countries to meet their recycling waste commitments.
