Crude Oil Prices Trend
MEGlobal has nominated its December monoethylene glycol (MEG) Asian Contract Price (ACP) at USD660/tonne, up by USD10/tonne from November ACP, said the company.
Before that MEGlobal announced that its Asian Contract Price (ACP) for monoethylene glycol (MEG) was USD650/MT CFR Asian main ports for arrival November 2020. The November 2020 ACP reflects the short term supply/demand situation in the Asian market.
The price is on a CFR (cost and freight) Asia basis. Spot MEG supply remained limited as most producers were running their units at reduced rates to cope with poor margins.
As it was written earlier, MEGlobal announced that its Asian Contract Price (ACP) for monoethylene glycol (MEG) was USD640/MT CFR Asian main ports for arrival October 2020.
MEG is mainly used in the production of polyester fibres, resins and films (around 80% of global consumption), followed by use in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin. It is also used as automotive antifreeze.
UK-based major BP and Danish utility Orsted will work together on bringing green hydrogen to BP’s Lingen refinery by developing a 50MW electrolyser, the companies announced on 10 November. Petrochemical SustainableSources BOPP
The electrolyser is earmarked to come online for 2024, when the European Commission targets 6GW of electrolyser capacity as suggested in its European hydrogen strategy.
According to BP, the running capacity of the electrolyser has the potential to generate one tonne of hydrogen per hour, roughly 8.8 thousand tonnes per year. Given maximum production output based on this rate, the unit would generate around 289GWh/year of hydrogen.
Current demand for hydrogen in Germany is around 55TWh/year, according to the German national hydrogen strategy.
The hydrogen from the project will be generated using offshore wind supplied by Orsted, which has 1.4GW of installed capacity in the German North Sea and an additional 1.2GW planned.
Senior editor for recycling Matt Tudball discusses the ongoing monthly price discussions in the European recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET) market, as well as:
Market sources think prices may bottom out in November

Europe styrene daily spot prices have surged by nearly 30% in the past two weeks, reaching pre-pandemic levels and 2020 highs as fundamentals remain firm.
At the beginning of October, spot prices were at $600/tonne, but less than six weeks later prices averaged $900/tonne on Tuesday as bids stood at $850/tonne and offers spiked to $950/tonne. Petrochemical SustainableSources BOPP
There is a lack of styrene spot in Europe due to healthy export demand to Asia and reduced imports from the US because of hurricanes in the Gulf Coast.
Also, there is a delayed restart at a producer undergoing planned maintenance, while another is still in a turnaround as planned.
Firmer crude oil prices and a more positive demand outlook following news of a highly effective Covid-19 vaccine by Pfizer are also reasons contributing to the upswing in recent days.
The industry increased its exports by 14.7% in October and reached a value of 1 billion USD. Petrochemical SustainableSources BOPP
After completing his high school education in College St.Vincent in Belgium, Emre Yoleri returned to Turkey and has begun his university education at Gazi University, Department of Labor Economics and Industrial Relations. He left this department and completed Eskişehir Anadolu University Faculty of Business Administration. He is currently pursuing an MBA at Bahçeşehir University. Yoleri has been working in international relations, project development, organization and writing at NEFA PR agency since 2015.
Textile exports increased by 14.7% in October, growth continues. The Turkish textile and raw materials industry managed to maintain the increase in exports as of October after the new pandemic. In October 2020, the textile industry’s exports increased by 14.7% compared to the same month of the previous year and by 9% compared to September 2020, reaching a value of 1 billion USD. Based on the January-October period of 2020, it is seen that the exports of the sector decreased by 6.9% and reached a value of 7.7 billion USD. Turkey’s overall exports increased by 5.6% in October, and was valued at 17.3 billion USD. Accordingly, the share of the textile industry in overall exports was 5.9% in October.

EMMTEC services releases this White Paper that provides insightful data how to control the product quality of recycled PET polymer and packaging. In addition, the right set of chemical analyses techniques to detect relevant substances and PET properties are discussed. Petrochemical SustainableSources BOPP
During PET production, product use and PET recycling, the PET product quality can deteriorate significantly by:
- Thermal degradation
- The presence of solid contaminants.
- The presence of taste & hazardous substances (such as resp. limonene & benzene)
- Discolouration that affects the PET product appearance in visibility applications.
Therefore, cost-effective processing and obtaining the right and safe recycled PET quality is essential for both PET recyclers, PET packaging manufacturers and brand owners. Chemical analyses techniques are vital to monitor and control the quality of the PET polymers and packaging. It contributes to improve product safety risks and saving costs.
The battle of plastic recycling. The premise: there is a used plastic that is easy to recycle, highly sought after, of high value, and this plastic is the Pet of water bottles and soft drinks. Then there is a used plastic that is impossible to recycle properly, nobody wants it, it’s just a cost to burn it or worse, send it to landfill, and this is the mixture of small fragments of different, incompatible plastics.
With the battle between recycling consortia to secure the number one plastic in the background, the other day the Antitrust Authority imposed a 27 million fine on the historic Corepla consortium, accused of dominating position by a young and combative Coripet consortium. Petrochemical SustainableSources BOPP
The names of the two consortia already imply what lies behind them: the Corepla (consortium for the recovery of plastics) must collect and recycle all plastics, even those uncomfortable and unfortunate, and does not like the activity of Coripet (the Pet recycling group) especially interested in the more valuable ones.
In 2008, the Old “Plastic Limit Orders” stipulated that non-degradable plastic bags were charged. The Upgraded “Plastic Limit Orders” are coming fiercely and involves a variety of plastic products. Petrochemical SustainableSources BOPP
The Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Prevention and Control of Environmental Pollution by Solid Wastes (2020 Amendment) has been revised and adopted at the 17th meeting of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China on April 29, 2020, and came into effect on September 1, 2020. In a notification published on August 28, 2020, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce outlined a set of upcoming restrictions on the use of plastics within the country. According to the documents issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment in January, 2020, non-degradable disposable plastic straws are prohibited in the catering industry nationwide by the end of 2020.
Amcor continues to achieve significant progress in its efforts to enhance sustainability and reduce plastic waste. In this year’s sustainability report, Amcor reveals its delivery against key target areas and re-establishes the central role that sustainability plays.
The report details efforts Amcor has taken across its rigids, flexibles and specialty cartons businesses. Petrochemical SustainableSources BOPP
Highlights include progress in bringing product offerings in line with sustainability commitments; an increased use of post-consumer recycled materials; continued efforts to run operations efficiently and in line with environmental standards; and increased partnership activity. Amcor joined WWF ReSource: Plastic initiative, a global consortium of companies and organisations collaborating to keep waste out of the environment.
David Clark, Vice President for Sustainability at Amcor, said: “At Amcor we believe that winning for the environment means that we are winning as a business.
