-Cellulose-based film moves to industrial testing phase

Advances in cellulose-based food packaging material have moved to the testing phase of industrial production in a joint development between VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Arla Foods, Paulig and Wipak.

VTT is testing Thermocell plastics film made of cellulose and fatty acids as a potential replacement for fossil-derived plastics. Petrochemical BioPolymers PEFPackaging

The structural ingredient in plants, cellulose is composed of large polymer molecules. When extracted from wood, it does not compete with food production, as many other biomaterials do. Until now, cellulose has lacked one important feature of plastics: thermoplasticity.

-Eneos nominates February contract price for benzene in Asia at USD685 per tonne

Eneos (formerly JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy), part of Eneos Holding, a major Japanese petrochemical producer, nominated the February contract price of benzene in Asia at USD685 per tonne, up USD50 per tonne compared to the January contract price, a company source told ICIS . Petrochemical BioPolymers PEFPackaging

The price was nominated on CFR Asia delivery terms.

The January contract price for benzene in Asia was set at USD635 per tonne, which is USD60 per tonne higher than the contract price in December.

Eneos is expected to finalize the February material contract price on January 29th.

Benzene is a raw material for the production of styrene, which, in turn, is the main raw material for the production of polystyrene (PS).

-Dow sees momentum in PE, PU driving earnings gains in Q1, 2021

US-based Dow expects continued momentum in polyethylene (PE) and polyurethanes (PU) driving further earnings growth in Q1 and 2021 following a strong Q4 that soundly beat Wall Street consensus estimates. Petrochemical BioPolymers PEFPackaging

“Demand still continues to look good into the first quarter, inventory levels are still low [and] operating rates are good. In the US Gulf Coast, our operating rates were in the mid-90s% in the fourth quarter. So we’re going to see… good margins in the PE business,” said Jim Fitterling, CEO of Dow, on the company’s Q4 earnings conference call.

PE margins in Q4 were up about 7 cents/lb in the US, 13 cents/lb in Europe and 10 cents/lb in Asia, he noted.

The upswing in China coal prices of about $200/tonne in Q4 from a cold winter and less imports from Australia amid a dispute, along with low PE inventories, helped underpin rising PE prices, he said.

-Asahi Kasei introduces LEONA SG series to Europe

Asahi Kasei is introducing the semi-aromatic polyamide LEONA SG series to the European market. In addition to high stiffness, it features an improved flowability and a superior surface appearance without any additional surface treatment or coating.

The automotive interior is becoming a major element influencing buying decisions. Surface materials determine how the vehicle interior and the driving experience are perceived. Petrochemical BioPolymers PEFPackaging

The LEONA SG series is a new semi-aromatic polyamide available in grades reinforced with 40, 50 and 60 per cent glass fibre. Even with a high glass fibre content, it features a superior surface quality and gloss at shorter cycle times. This can be achieved without additional surface treatment or additional coating. The material offers an excellent inherent mechanical strength even under moisture.

In a conditioned state the 50 per cent glass fibre-filled SG105 shows a clear superiority compared to standard and other semi-aromatic polyamides: While standard PA 66 shows a deterioration of 30 per cent in tensile modulus compared to its dry state, SG105 maintains its performance. SG105 also shows an eight per cemnt better flexural strength than comparable semi-aromatic polyamides.

-Sidel’s 5,000th labeller delivered for Ting Hsin

Sidel has reached a new performance and quality milestone in the company’s history by delivering its 5,000th labeller for Ting Hsin International Group (Ting Hsin) in China. Having one of the largest installed bases of Sidel labellers in the world, Ting Hsin once again chose Sidel, and its latest generation labelling solution EvoDECO, to meet today’s market demands with an innovative labelling solution that is designed for greater flexibility, modularity and cost efficiency.

The long-term cooperation between Sidel and Ting Hsin dates back to 2005, when the first 20 labellers for water lines were installed. As one of the leading beverage players in the world, the famous beverage brand Master Kong is part of Ting Hsin, leading the ready-to-drink (RTD) tea segment in China with a 46% market share and being one of the top two carbonated soft drink (CSD) manufacturers in China with around 30% market share. -Holland Colours: Colorants for PET with built-in TasteGuard

Taste consistency can be an issue with PET packaging, which is why Holland Colours offers PET colorants that include TasteGuard.  Petrochemical BioPolymers PEFPackaging

During PET preform production, the molecule acetaldehyde (AA) is formed as a byproduct of PET. Although AA is a naturally occurring substance, it has a sweet taste and can cause an “off” flavor in applications such as bottled water. To prevent this from happening, an AA scavenger like Holland Colours’ TasteGuard can be used to prevent migration of AA into the bottle content.

For 20 years, there were strict patents in place around the globe concerning this type of packaging additive and who could supply and produce it. In February 2021, these restrictions will no longer be valid per legal reviews of rules provided by the European Patent Office and the US Patent and Trademark Office. Therefore, Holland Colours’ TasteGuard will be available freely across all regions.

-Amcor lays out sustainability roadmap

Converter Amcor has laid out a three-pronged approach to sustainability ahead of its target of making all of its packaging reusable or recyclable by 2025.

Under what it describes as a new roadmap, the company has pledged to continue innovating products to be recycled or reused, to collaborate with industry to make recycling widely available, and to inform consumers about how to help keep waste out of the environment. Petrochemical BioPolymers PEFPackaging

Amcor said it invests $100 million every year in R&D to ensure a “world-beating” pipeline of innovations that tackle the biggest technical and practical barriers to packaging.

-PX under strains from weaker PTA profit

Several PX plants either cut operating rate or shut down recently, hence the market got bolstered though some of them have restarted.

PX margins clawed back some losses recently, as a result of production disruption. In addition, the reduction could affect the contract supplies to downstream PTA plant. Hence, the market got propped up and bids for PX were firm.

The improvement in PX margin was also due to expectation of reducing inventory in China in Jan-Feb. It is estimated that PX inventory could drop by 250kt in Jan-Feb, therefore, it can be seen from the trades of Feb materials concluded earlier that Feb PX price was firmer.  Petrochemical BioPolymers PEFPackaging
