-Krones joins pan-EU circular economy platform

Germany’s Krones has signed up to the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform, which seeks to bring together companies and initiatives proactively engaged in creating a circular European economy.

Set up by the European Commission and the European Economic and Social Committee, the platform has the declared goal of closing material cycles.

Krones has committed to the following eight targets: all new PET bottling lines to be rPET compatible by 2025; alternative secondary-packaging solutions containing no single-use plastics by 2022; design forms of packaging suited for recycling; support clients changing from linear production to circular economy; enable the use of tethered caps on equipment; sustainable (and removable) labelling solutions; upgrade Krones’ solutions for material recycling of packaging plastics (solid/flexible, PET, polyolefins and PS); and proactively pursue development projects connected with disruptive technologies that take beverages to the consumer in innovative ways.

-ETHYLENE PRICES PLUNGE IN ASIA

This week, despite firmer upstream energy values, ethylene prices witnessed a sharp fall in Asia. Prices tumbled, on the back of plentiful product availability in the region, weaker demand trends and deals concluded at lower levels in the region.

CFR North East Asia ethylene prices were assessed lower at the USD 840-845/mt levels, a week on week plunge of USD 75/mt.

CFR South East Asia prices were assessed down at the USD 820-825/mt levels, a tumble of USD 65/mt from the previous week.

In plant news, Eneos Corporation, has restarted its cracker on February 1, 2021. The cracker was shut for maintenance on December 4, 2020, and continued to remain off-line owing to technical issues. Located at Kawasaki in Japan, the cracker has an ethylene capacity of 540,000 mt/year and a propylene capacity of 308,000 mt/year.

-European Flexible Packaging manufacturers concerned about polymer shortage and price development

The members of Flexible Packaging Europe (FPE) are very concerned about the recent developments of the polymer markets in Europe. In very short period the manufacturers of flexible packaging were confronted with an increased number of ‘force majeure’ declarations or ‘maintenance’ announcements by the leading polymer manufacturers in Europe creating sudden and significant shortages along with price increases in the supply chain. Petrochemicals BioPlastic PEPolyolefins

The effect on converters means they may have difficulties in supplying finished products to meet their customers order requirements, particularly in the food and beverage sectors. Those have an increased demand to serve the European population during the pandemic with its many lockdowns. During times when canteens and restaurants are mostly closed, and more adults and children are working and studying from home European consumers depend on a safe and stable supply of food and beverage products. Almost half of the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) excluding beverages in the European Union are packed with flexible packaging. Examples are all kind of packaged foods, pet food, personal and household care products.

-Over half of the total EU plastics recycling capacity certified with EuCertPlast

With the release of the record number of 4.6 million tonnes, the EuCertPlast certification was granted to more than half of the total EU recycling capacity covering both pre- and post-consumer streams.

The scheme grew by 27 per cent in comparison to 2019, and with 45 new recycling facilities. There are now 214 companies certified by EuCertPlast, demonstrating its wide recognition in the plastics industry. Petrochemicals BioPlastic PEPolyolefins

The leader, with a share of 30 per cent of the EuCertPlast certified facilities, is Germany. Italy with the 12 per cent share is in second place, followed closely by the Netherlands and France, having respectively 11 per cent and 10 per cent share of the certified capacity.

Additionally, LDPE and PET are the most widely certified polymers representing almost half of the total capacity.

Despite the pandemic, which affected the ability of the auditors to travel to recyclers’ facilities, EuCertPlast certified companies grew substantially in the course of 2020.

-Nestlé: 96% of packaging produced in Italy is just recyclable

Published the “Sustainable Packaging Commitment: road to 2025” report

96% of the packaging used by Nestlé for products made in Italy is already recyclable. This is one of the main points that emerged from the “Nestlé Sustainable Packaging Commitment: road to 2025” report, published today by the Group to take stock of projects and strategies developed to support the sustainability of packaging, with particular focus on Italy.

But Nestlè initiatives extend further national borders: in September 2019, the Nestlé Institute of Packaging Sciences in Lausanne, Switzerland, the first of its kind in the food industry, was inaugurated. Petrochemicals BioPlastic PEPolyolefins

The center develops research projects on the sustainability of packaging and on the experimentation of new bio-based, compostable and biodegradable materials.

In addition, the company is also working to reduce, reuse and recycle existing packaging: Nestlé has achieved 100% recyclability in Italy for corrugated cardboard and glass, 98% for paper, 87% for aluminum, 90% for rigid plastics and 80% for flexible plastics.

-PET bottle chip value back to 6000 yuan/mt, how will it move later on

Early Feb, propped up by hiking crude oil and polyester feedstock futures, PET bottle chip price soared to above 6000yuan/mt, MOM rising 600-700yuan/mt, and up 1500yuan/mt from a year earlier. Price surges more than 300yuan/mt in merely two days. Petrochemicals BioPlastic PEPolyolefins

Major reason lies in cost hike. Polymerization cost was around 4600-4650yuan/mt in Jan, while it climbed up to 5050-5100yuan/mt after one month, up 10-11%. The trigger is from PX plants cutting back output or shutdown, and settlement of ACP also helped boosted market sentiment, supporting PTA prices to hike. Besides, as PTA-PX spread stood constantly low, and turnaround plans may increase later on, more traders feel unwilling to sell low. MEG side, MEG fundamental fares better than PTA in H2 2020. MEG spot supply in China is a bit tight since H2 2020, as MEG imports are low, making spot liquidity a bit tight. Hence MEG market trend is stable-to-strong. Cost side has rendered some support to polyester products.

-Cellulose foam by Stora Enso wins “Cellulose Fibre Innovation of the Year”

Stora Enso’s cellulose foam wins “Cellulose Fibre Innovation of the Year 2021” in an award ceremony organised during the 2nd International Conference on Cellulose Fibres (2-3 February 2021). Cellulose foam was among six nominees up for the award, all recognised for the development of new technologies and applications in the cellulose fibre industry. Petrochemicals BioPlastic PEPolyolefins

Cellulose foam by Stora Enso is a lightweight wood fiber-based foam material for protective and cushioning material in packaging. This novel, sustainable foam material has been designed to be fully natural and the technology offers a biodegradable alternative to a wide range of products.

The lightweight and shock absorbing properties make it an especially attractive alternative for protective packaging applications. In this space, environmental concerns are currently driving regulatory efforts towards limiting, or banning, the use of traditional fossil-based foam materials, such as polyethylene (PE) foam and expanded polystyrene (EPS), commonly known as Styrofoam. The environmentally friendly production process of cellulose foam results in a material that is renewable and that can be fully recycled with regular paper and board. Our cellulose foam is a game changing cutting-edge material created for a circular bioeconomy.

-Sportswear giant to use 60% sustainable material in all products / Collaboration with Finnish start-up

The fashion and sportwear brand’s commitment to sustainability resurfaces every year. For 2021, Adidas plans to use more than 60% sustainable material in all products worldwide. The move basically translates to recycled polyester and sustainable cotton, which is something the company says it has been using since 2018. To this end, Adidas notes that it is currently trying to develop a process to turn used clothes into cotton-like material in cooperation with Finnish start-up Infinited Fiber . Petrochemicals BioPlastic PEPolyolefins

With Adidas’ 60%-sustainable-material range under brand names “Primeblue” and “Primegreen”, the German firm is inching closer to its goal of using only recycled polyester for all products from 2024 onward.
