-$43m boost for US circular economy projects

The REMADE (Reducing Embodied-energy and Decreasing Emissions) Institute has announced $43 million in new technology research, selecting 24 new projects as part of the institute’s latest round of funding aimed at accelerating the US’ transition to a circular economy.

REMADE, which is a public-private partnership established by the US Department of Energy, believes that the results of the projects will move the country closer to its energy conservation and emissions reduction targets.

The 24 research projects are expected to result in numerous positive impacts, including increasing the recycling of materials by as much as 20 million tonnes per year (a nearly 15 per cent increase per year in all recycled materials in the US), saving up to 640 petajoules of embodied energy per year (the equivalent of conserving 100 million barrels of oil per year), and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 30 million tonnes per year.

-HOLLAND COLOURS -Additive for high-speed PET bottle production with light barrier properties

The additive is said to have improved opacity

Holland Colours (Apeldoorn / The Netherlands; www.hollandcolours.com) has launched “Holcomer Thermostretch”, an additive whose properties are said to allow PET packaging manufacturers to accelerate bottle production while maintaining a high level of light barrier protection for the product.

The additive delivers significantly higher opacity and improved heat absorbance at a dosing level 40% less than that of traditional alternatives, according to the supplier. It noted that the product also meets new regulations that limit the use of inorganic pigments, thereby improving recyclability. Chemicals Biotechnology PolyesterPSF

Holland Colours said revenues in the first half to 30 September 2020 dropped 7.1% year-on-year to EUR 48.5m. Thanks to cost cuts, operating result was almost stable at EUR 6.1m. Net profit rose to EUR 4.5m from EUR 4.46m.

-New circular packaging solutions for the Spanish dairy sector

Spanish multinational Repsol has reached an agreement with rigid plastic packaging manufacturer Jokey Group, and Spanish organic dairy company Cantero de Letur.

New circular packaging solutions for the Spanish dairy sector

The Cantero de Letur Group will pioneer the use of recycled plastic packing in the organic dairy industry in Spain for its cheese products. The packaging will use ISCC Plus certified Repsol Reciclex circular polypropylene. Chemicals Biotechnology PolyesterPSF

The technologies used by Repsol to manufacture these circular resins make it possible to take advantage of non-recyclable plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfill. Thus, waste becomes a new raw material for Repsol’s processes, to produce new circular materials with the same quality and functionality as virgin resins. Therefore, they are suitable for the food industry with its high quality and hygiene requirements.

-Petrobras CEO calls bio jet fuel key for de-carbonizing

The chief executive of Brazil’s state-run oil company Petrobras, Roberto Castello Branco, said biofuels, especially those for the aviation industry, will be key for “de-carbonizing” transportation in coming years, a goal for energy transition.

Brazil, a major corn and sugarcane producer and a country with a more diversified energy matrix than its neighbors, is also a large consumer of domestic ethanol, with pure gasoline supplies a rarity. Chemicals Biotechnology PolyesterPSF

“For the future, we are evolving to bio jet fuel, which will be very important for de-carbonizing transportation, so we are focusing on ships and aircraft,” he said at the CERAWeek energy conference on Tuesday.

Aviation biofuels are biomass-derived fuels from plants or waste used to power aircrafts. They produce lower CO2 emissions than conventional jet fuel.

-Fresh milk in Amcor’s clear PCR/PET bottles is a first in Argentina

Amcor has broken new ground in the Argentine dairy market developing the first fresh milk bottle made of transparent post-consumer recycled (PCR) polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin. Chemicals Biotechnology PolyesterPSF

The custom-designed 1-L container for leading dairy maker Mastellone Hnos, Buenos Aires, supports the positioning of the La Serenísima Original milk brand as a natural product while also delivering optimum shelf life and increased sustainability benefits.

Latin American dairy companies are increasingly using clear PET bottles to showcase freshness and premium quality. The cold-fill bottle contains 20 per cent PCR content.

Martin Darmandrail, Amcor’s Specialty Containers Director (Argentina), said: “In a market that has remained stagnant for several years, we’ve broken the rules by developing an entirely new format offering for fresh milk. We’ve shaken things up with a unique fresh milk package with the durability, freshness, performance, and sustainability benefits of PET.”

-A block system for the future – Tempo Beverages invests in new PET line from KHS

A trust lasting more than 35 years: KHS recently commissioned a new non-returnable PET line for Israeli beverage producer Tempo Beverages under very special circumstances – and in doing so combined its latest-generation stretch blow molding technology with a filler for the very first time. Chemicals Biotechnology PolyesterPSF

In Israel Tempo is literally on everyone’s lips: as the biggest producer of alcoholic beverages and the third-largest supplier of soft drinks the brand is known to almost the entire population of 9.1 million. There’s hardly a household in the country without a bottle of beer, water, juice or cola from Netanya in the refrigerator.

In 1952 a unique story of growth and success began in the city on the Mediterranean between Tel Aviv and Haifa. At the start of the 1990s Tempo Beverages became PepsiCo’s sole bottler in Israel and Heineken’s exclusive sales partner.

In 2005 40% of the company, which is also the biggest brewery in Israel, came under the ownership of the Heineken Group. And nine years ago the beverage producer was made a licensee of the French spirits group Pernod Ricard. Tempo now clocks up sales of about €375 million, 45% of this with non-alcoholic beverages.

-Higher cost, demand to boost China TiO2 dioxide prices

Market participants expect Chinese titanium dioxide prices to extend their gains in the short term in view of higher concentrate feedstock costs and firm demand from international consumers.

Prices of 46pc grade titanium concentrate feedstock yesterday rose to 2,060-2,150 yuan/t ($319-333/t) ex-works with 13pc value-added tax unpaid, the highest level compared with Yn1,550-1,700/t ex-works on 6 September 2012 when Argus launched this assessment.

Domestic offer prices from over 12 major dioxide producers on 1 March moved up by Yn800-1,000/t, with export offer prices rising by $150-240/t fob after major global dioxide producers Chemours, Tronox and Venator on 24 February raised their offer prices for supplies to the Asia-Pacific region by $200/t, effective from 1 April.
