Avantium has secured two new offtake contracts in a boost to its planned building of a new plant in the Netherlands.
The Dutch firm has now secured conditional offtake agreements with four companies – speciality chemicals business Toyobo, polyester film producer Terphane, beverage bottling company Refresco, and an unnamed global brand owner.
The contracts are for the supply of polyethylene furanoate (PEF) resin for bottles and films.
With the addition of the two new contracts, Avantium said its Renewable Polymers (RNP) business has made progress towards a Final Investment Decision (FID) over the construction of the planned furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) plant in the town of Delfzijl.
The company has also signed a collaboration agreement with brewer Carlsberg to jointly develop several PEF applications, including its Green Fibre Bottle, which uses a PEF polymer film barrier.
US-based Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) has voiced its strong opposition to the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act, introduced in the US House of Representatives and US Senate. It says the act places the over US$7 billion capital expenditure spending in plastics material and resin manufacturing in “serious jeopardy”.

Additionally, this misguided legislation could have the unintended consequence of leading to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions.”
In what it calls an industry-first, Faerch can now provide third party-approved certificates on the share of post-consumer recycled content (PCR) in its PET food packaging solutions. With Gulf Coast chemicals and plastics production disrupted by winter storms, resulting in tight availability and galloping price increases for PP and other resins, this might be a perfect time to consider a new injection molded package concept that can reduce plastic usage by up to 76%. As reported in Feb. ’20 Starting Up, the concept was introduced publicly at the K 2019 fair in Düsseldorf by Swiss-based Muller Group, specialists in molds and automation for thin-wall packaging and in-mold labeling (IML). Working with Artaplast of Sweden, Muller developed mold and IML automation technology for replacing up to 76% of the PP in a dairy cup with a thin skeleton injection molded over a thick paper IML label coated on both sides with PP. Artaplast calls the concept Fiber Cup and has applied it to cottage cheese and yogurt containers in Europe.

Sweden-based household appliance maker Electrolux AB, in its most recent sustainability report, says it has set as a goal that by 2030 its product ranges will contain at least 50 percent recycled materials.
The company does not mention to what extent recycled-content metals will play a role but writes in more depth about its incorporation of recycled-content plastics.
Electrolux says it used 6,800 metric tons of recycled plastic in its products in 2020 and indicates it is aiming much higher.

The new factory is under construction in a part of Northern England where some of the first large-scale plastic manufacturing began in the 1930s.
