“Speculative” current prices have been inflated via artificial supply restrictions by petrochemical companies, warns PAGEV
The Turkish plastics industry association PAGEV has called for the removal of import duties and protectionist measures on plastics raw material imports, after pointing to a suspicious wave of closures by the global petrochemical industry that has ruined the supply and demand balance. Generalnews PA6Recycling Hydrogen
As of November 2020, petrochemical companies around the world have cut production and reduced the supply of raw materials under various pretexts, allowing prices to rise rapidly and giving the suspicion of an OPEC-like Cartel arrangement.
In a press statement, PAGEV said that the profitability of cartel-like conduct, coupled with supply chain disruptions, logistics issues, and most importantly the reluctance of governments to intervene due to the fragility of the global economy because of the pandemic, encourages some companies to continue these practices.

Major Asian paraxylene producers have announced their material contract prices for April shipments at USD910-940 per tonne, up USD40-70 per tonne from March levels, market sources told ICIS . Generalnews PA6Recycling Hydrogen
Prices have been denominated on CFR Asia delivery terms.
Thus, the Japanese Eneos Corporation announced its contract price for paraxylene for April at USD910 per ton, CFR Asia, and South Korean SK Global Chemicals announced its price for material supplies next month at USD940 per ton, CFR Asia.
India’s Reliance Industries, meanwhile, has nominated its April paraxylene contract price at USD920 per tonne CFR Asia.
Earlier it was noted that the participants in the negotiation process to agree on contract prices for paraxylene in Asia reached an agreement for March at USD870 per tonne, which is USD165 per tonne higher than the level of the previous month. The contract price for paraxylene has been approved on CFR Asia terms.
Paraxylene is a raw material for the synthesis of terephthalic acid – an intermediate product for the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

- Partnerships and collaboration to advance plastics value chain
- Specialty chemicals as key enabler for product circularity and waste minimization
Clariant, a focused, sustainable and innovative specialty chemical company, today announced it has officially joined the EU Circular Plastics Alliance. The alliance aims to enhance plastics recycling in line with the objectives of the EU Circular Economy Action Plan and the Green Deal program. Clariant’s engagement is part of the company’s active support for the transition towards a more circular plastics economy.
“Shifting towards a global circular plastics economy is an immense challenge that can only be brought forward through ambitious commitments, collaborations and an active stakeholder dialog. Generalnews PA6Recycling Hydrogen

Formosa Plastics Corporation USA, a subsidiary of a major global petrochemical producer Formosa Petrochemical, announced an increase in the price of polyethylene (PE) of all Formolene grades for deliveries in April this year, the company said in a letter to its customers. Generalnews PA6Recycling Hydrogen
Thus, the increase in April prices for the company’s PE will be 9 cents per pound (USD198 per ton) and will come into force on April 1, 2021.
The supply of PE to the United States was limited prior to the mid-February winter storm off the US Gulf Coast, which caused at least temporary disruptions to most of the PE manufacturing facilities in the country.
These factories have gradually returned to service over the past few weeks, but production losses have significantly reduced the supply of already small batches of material.
Sustainable alternatives to conventional plastic should be exempt from the UK’s new plastic packaging tax, according to a flexible compostable packaging producer.
Writing to the UK Treasury, TIPA said: “Traditional recycling alone is failing to deal with the millions of tonnes of plastic detritus on our planet and there is no foreseeable change to this without systematic change in the materials we employ, including compostables.” Generalnews PA6Recycling Hydrogen
The company’s call for action was backed by the Bio-based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA), a UK trade body, and came as the government’s Plastic Packaging Tax consultation closes.
Biome Technologies has announced that its Bioplastics division has been awarded funding of £273,000 from the UK Government’s Innovate UK.

In line with expanding Biome Bioplastics materials portfolio using novel technology, this funding will accelerate the testing of the commercial viability of the three most exciting candidate materials in the division’s current research portfolio.
This project will use microwave technology in the development of an efficient, industrially scalable manufacturing process and will conduct further larger-scale testing at the Biorenewables Development Centre in York.
Since 2013, Biome’s Bioplastics division has directed more than six million pounds of research and development funding, supported by various grants and in association with a number of leading UK universities, towards a new portfolio of bio-based and biodegradable materials.
Materials firm Repsol will build at its Puertollano industrial complex, Spain’s first plant for chemical recycling of PU foam, the main component of mattresses, sofas, and vehicle seats, among other uses. At the end of its useful life, PU foam is one of the most difficult plastics to process. Generalnews PA6Recycling Hydrogen
The new recycling facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2022 and will entail an investment of approximately EUR12 million. Once operational, the plant will be capable of processing around 2,000 tonnes/year of PU foam, the equivalent of 380 linear km of mattresses placed side by side.
