At RadiciGroup, production scraps are recovered, recycled and reconverted into polymers, and eventually spun into yarn featuring technical characteristics comparable to the yarnmadeoffossil-source materials, but boasting decidedly better environmental performance. In fact, the above-mentioned new yarn range reduces CO2emissions by almost 90% and generates energy savings ofmore than 87%and water savings of 90%.
Unifi, a US-based leading innovator in recycled and synthetic yarns, has reported 4.6 per cent sales growth to $178.9 million in its third quarter (Q3) FY21 ended on March 28, 2021, compared to the sales of $170.9 million during the same period previous fiscal. Take flexible food packages. Those films contain several layers, each made of a different type of plastic. Because each type must be recycled separately, those films are not recyclable. Even some items made from only one kind of plastic are not recyclable. Yogurt cups, for instance, contain a plastic called polypropylene (Pah-lee-PROH-puh-leen). When this gets recycled, it turns into a gross, dark, smelly material. So most recycling plants don’t bother with it.
Only two kinds of plastic are commonly recycled in the United States. One is the type used in soda bottles. That’s called PET, short for polyethylene terephthalate . The other is the plastic in milk jugs and detergent containers. That’s high-density polyethylene, or HDPE. Together, those plastics make up only a small fraction of plastic trash. In 2018 alone, the United States landfilled 27 million tons of plastic, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A mere 3 million tons was recycled.
Coming to the end of April 2021, nylon 6 upstream sectors, from caprolactam to nylon 6 polymer, are still under a complex of pressures, which hinder the market from a substantial break-through.
The above chart shows the price trends of CPL and nylon 6 conventional spinning (CS) chip in the past 8 months, and also the price spread between CPL and benzene. The former ones have seen continuous increase in January and February 2021, and reached a ceiling at March 8 (CPL) and February 26 (chip) respectively, and then entered near two months of consolidation. The latter one, CPL-benzene price spread, an indicator of CPL producers’ cash flow, has reduced at the same time with CPL price trend, while the decline was deeper as benzene cost hiked vigorously when CPL market was weak. Lummus Technology’s Novolen business has been awarded a polypropylene (PP) contract by BUA Refinery, a subsidiary of Nigeria’s BUA Group, at their grassroots refinery in Nigeria, according to Hydrocarbonprocessing.
Lummus’ scope includes the technology license for a 285 KTA PP unit as well as basic design engineering, training and services, and catalyst supply.
“We are pleased to sign this polypropylene contract for our BUA Refinery and Petrochemicals Project with Lummus Technology, a world leader in delivering polypropylene solutions, which will solve the increasing demand for high-performance grade polypropylene in Nigeria, the Gulf of Guinea as well as the Sub-Saharan Africa Region,” said Abdul Samad Rabiu, Chairman of BUA Group. “We are confident in the capacity and technical expertise of Lummus Technology to deliver a best-in-class, 285 KTA PP unit for our refinery project scheduled to come on stream in 2024.”
Lummus Novolen Technology GmbH licenses PP technology and provides related engineering and technical support/advisory services.

Just 18 months ago, global reverse vending leader, TOMRA, unveiled its highly-anticipated R1 solution, a “multi-feed” machine that enables recyclers to pour in over 100 empty beverage containers in one go – rather than inserting them one by one. Today, TOMRA marks a milestone with its 100th R1 installation, at supermarket Coop Obs Amanda in Haugesund, on the west coast of Norway. Internationally, a further 20 TOMRA R1 reverse vending machines have already been ordered.
Consumer research has found nearly half of all recyclers select the store where they recycle based on the quality of the recycling experience on offer, and volumes of redeemed bottles and cans at TOMRA R1 locations have risen as much as 403% in one store. SOCAR Polymer has introduced two new grades of impact copolymer polypropylene (ICP) resins that are the first in its portfolio to incorporate Milliken Chemical’s Hyperform HPN performance additive for polypropylene.
Azerbaijan-based SOCAR is marketing these materials to customers in Russia, Turkey and other countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

The two new grades are CB 4848 MO (with a melt flow rate of 48) and CB 6448 MO (with a melt flow rate of 64. Both offer a balance of end-use properties. These ICP grades deliver moulded parts that exhibit low shrinkage, improved thermal resistance (HDT), and an excellent balance between stiffness and impact resistance.

As interest in the circular economy grows, more companies have been setting goals to increase the recyclability and recycled content of their packaging. AMERIPEN – the American Institute for Packaging and the Environment, a policy-based trade association for the US packaging industry, commissioned a study to better understand the relationship between company packaging goals for post-consumer recycled (PCR) content and current supply and demand.
Through evaluation of domestic supply and reprocessing capacity for plastic resin, researchers conclude that the United States currently lacks the available supply and, in some cases, domestic reclamation capacity to meet company goals.
Success with company goals for PCR content will require collaboration across the entire value chain to ensure a robust domestic market for plastics reuse.
