-Macron And RadiciGroup Collaborating For Sustainability

To be leaders of change and promoters of a sustainable business model thatprovides traceable, virtuous and competitive production and supply chains, with benefits for all stakeholders. This is the corporate strategy of both Macron, an international brand leader in the sportswear industrybased in Bologna, and RadiciGroup, an Italian multinational headquarteredin Bergamo and world leading manufacturer of a wide range of chemical intermediates, polymers, high-performance engineering polymers, and advanced textile solutions for a variety of applications, mainly in the fashion industry.

The two standard bearers of Italian entrepreneurship excellence have decided to pool their competencies to develop and produce technical sportswear combining high performance and sustainability. One notable result of this collaboration is a type of sports socks made of Renycle®, a yarn manufactured by the Bergamo-based group from recycled nylon 6, a high-value material with excellent resistance, dyeing characteristics, softness and versatility. At RadiciGroup, production scraps are recovered, recycled and reconverted into polymers, and eventually spun into yarn featuring technical characteristics comparable to the yarnmadeoffossil-source materials, but boasting decidedly better environmental performance. In fact, the above-mentioned new yarn range reduces CO2emissions by almost 90% and generates energy savings ofmore than 87%and water savings of 90%.

-New recycling technologies could keep more plastic out of landfills

A lot of plastic is impossible to recycle. Chemists are trying to change that

It feels good to recycle. When you sort soda bottles and plastic bags from the rest of your garbage, it seems like you’re helping the planet. The more plastic you put in the blue bin, the more you’re keeping out of landfills, right?

Wrong. No matter how much plastic you try to recycle, most ends up in the trash heap.  PlasticRecycling PETPolymer Petrochemicals

Take flexible food packages. Those films contain several layers, each made of a different type of plastic. Because each type must be recycled separately, those films are not recyclable. Even some items made from only one kind of plastic are not recyclable. Yogurt cups, for instance, contain a plastic called polypropylene (Pah-lee-PROH-puh-leen). When this gets recycled, it turns into a gross, dark, smelly material. So most recycling plants don’t bother with it.

Only two kinds of plastic are commonly recycled in the United States. One is the type used in soda bottles. That’s called PET, short for polyethylene terephthalate . The other is the plastic in milk jugs and detergent containers. That’s high-density polyethylene, or HDPE. Together, those plastics make up only a small fraction of plastic trash. In 2018 alone, the United States landfilled 27 million tons of plastic, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A mere 3 million tons was recycled.

-Caprolactam and nylon see a continued wrestle in May

Coming to the end of April 2021, nylon 6 upstream sectors, from caprolactam to nylon 6 polymer, are still under a complex of pressures, which hinder the market from a substantial break-through.

The above chart shows the price trends of CPL and nylon 6 conventional spinning (CS) chip in the past 8 months, and also the price spread between CPL and benzene. The former ones have seen continuous increase in January and February 2021, and reached a ceiling at March 8 (CPL) and February 26 (chip) respectively, and then entered near two months of consolidation. The latter one, CPL-benzene price spread, an indicator of CPL producers’ cash flow, has reduced at the same time with CPL price trend, while the decline was deeper as benzene cost hiked vigorously when CPL market was weak.  PlasticRecycling PETPolymer Petrochemicals

For the time being, caprolactam and nylon 6 chip market are still wrestling with high feedstock cost, mounting chip inventory and tepid buy mood.

– Caprolactam prices are forced up by hiked benzene cost.

– Inventory of nylon 6 polymer in all links mounts, transferring pressure to upstream CPL sector.

– Conservative market outlook makes it slow to move inventory downstream.

-European consumer fears grow over chemicals– trade group

There is “significant” concern among consumers in Europe about exposure to chemicals, a health and safety representative with the European Bureau of Consumer Unions said on Wednesday.  PlasticRecycling PETPolymer Petrochemicals

Latest data show fears over hazards in consumer products rising dramatically in recent years. Around four in five respondents of a consumer survey carried out by the organisation before the onset of the pandemic reported concerns about chemicals in every day products, compared to 43% in the same survey in 2014, according to Pelle Moos, team leader for safety and health at BEUC

The years since 2014 have seen a substantial rise in media coverage of plastic waste in oceans, of microplastics in bottled water and re-usable baby bottles.

Public and government backlash over plastic pollution has been a key driver in the rise of the circular economy as the potential future of plastics production and consumption, with regulators in several countries threatening to ban certain uses for disposable plastics.

-TOMRA powers up 100th TOMRA R1 reverse vending machine, for recycling over 100 containers in one go

Just 18 months ago, global reverse vending leader, TOMRA, unveiled its highly-anticipated R1 solution, a “multi-feed” machine that enables recyclers to pour in over 100 empty beverage containers in one go – rather than inserting them one by one. Today, TOMRA marks a milestone with its 100th R1 installation, at supermarket Coop Obs Amanda in Haugesund, on the west coast of Norway. Internationally, a further 20 TOMRA R1 reverse vending machines have already been ordered.

Consumer research has found nearly half of all recyclers select the store where they recycle based on the quality of the recycling experience on offer, and volumes of redeemed bottles and cans at TOMRA R1 locations have risen as much as 403% in one store. Coop Obs Amanda will be hoping to replicate these results, along with the up to 272% increase in the number of consumer recycling sessions other stores have experienced.  PlasticRecycling PETPolymer Petrochemicals

Coop Obs Amanda store manager, Harald Fosen, explained, “We’re excited to offer our customers such a clean and convenient recycling experience. If it puts us on the map as the place to come for container returns in the region, that’s a big plus.”

-SOCAR Polymer launches two new impact copolymer polypropylene grades

SOCAR Polymer has introduced two new grades of impact copolymer polypropylene (ICP) resins that are the first in its portfolio to incorporate Milliken Chemical’s Hyperform HPN performance additive for polypropylene.

Azerbaijan-based SOCAR is marketing these materials to customers in Russia, Turkey and other countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

The company says these new ICP grades are ideal for use in thin-wall injection moulded (TWIM) packaging applications, as well as in housewares, sporting goods and toys.  PlasticRecycling PETPolymer Petrochemicals

The two new grades are CB 4848 MO (with a melt flow rate of 48) and CB 6448 MO (with a melt flow rate of 64. Both offer a balance of end-use properties. These ICP grades deliver moulded parts that exhibit low shrinkage, improved thermal resistance (HDT), and an excellent balance between stiffness and impact resistance.

-Demand Outpaces Supply of Recycled Content Plastic Packaging

It’s critical that the United States increases domestic supply of post-consumer recycled resins to meet current and future recycled-content goals of major brand owners. PlasticRecycling PETPolymer Petrochemicals

As interest in the circular economy grows, more companies have been setting goals to increase the recyclability and recycled content of their packaging. AMERIPEN – the American Institute for Packaging and the Environment, a policy-based trade association for the US packaging industry, commissioned a study to better understand the relationship between company packaging goals for post-consumer recycled (PCR) content and current supply and demand.

Through evaluation of domestic supply and reprocessing capacity for plastic resin, researchers conclude that the United States currently lacks the available supply and, in some cases, domestic reclamation capacity to meet company goals.

Success with company goals for PCR content will require collaboration across the entire value chain to ensure a robust domestic market for plastics reuse.
