Plastic is practical, cheap and incredibly popular. Every year, more than 350 million tonnes are produced worldwide. These plastics contain a huge variety of chemicals that may be released during their lifecycles – including substances that pose a significant risk to people and the environment. However, only a small proportion of the chemicals contained in plastic are publicly known or have been extensively studied.
A team of researchers led by Stefanie Hellweg, ETH Professor of Ecological Systems Design, has for a first time compiled a comprehensive database of plastic monomers, additives and processing aids for use in the production and processing of plastics on the world market, and systematically categorized them on the basis of usage patterns and hazard potential. The study, just published in the scientific journal Environmental Science & Technology, provides an enlightening but worrying insight into the world of chemicals that are intentionally added to plastics.
A high level of chemical diversity
The team identified around 10,500 chemicals in plastic. Many are used in packaging (2,489), textiles (2,429) and food-contact applications (2,109); some are for toys (522) and medical devices, including masks (247). Of the 10,500 substances identified, the researchers categorized 2,480 substances (24 percent) as substances of potential concern.

The Australian government has rejected plans for the world’s largest green hydrogen and ammonia production facility amid grave concerns about the impact of the showcase project on protected wetlands and wildlife.
In a surprise move, Environment Minister Sussan Ley ruled that the Asian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH) “will have clearly unacceptable impacts” on precious flora and fauna in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia.
Despite being awarded “Major Project Status” by the federal government in late 2020, the future of the multi-billion dollar scheme is now in doubt, with the various international companies involved in the proposals yet to respond.

Munich, June 21, 2021 – Clariant’s MegaMax catalyst series for CO2-based methanol production helps China reach its carbon neutrality target. Capturing and converting CO2 emissions is a cornerstone of the technology roadmap for addressing climate change. Synthesizing methanol from CO2 is a particularly valuable approach because methanol forms a building block for thousands of chemical products such as plastics, paints, cosmetics, and fuels — including providing an energy storage carrier for hydrogen.

One PET reclaimer says high bale prices and Among difficulty hiring and retaining employees are among the challenges facing the industry.
Demand and pricing for a number of plastic scrap grades and recycled plastics have been increasing, fueled in part by reduced virgin supply arising from production issues. While a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) reprocessor based in the Midwest says the current situation is challenging, “it’s better than where we were three to four years ago,” when demand was uneven. Among those challenges are rising bale prices and difficulty hiring and retaining employees.
The PET reprocessor says bottle bale prices have increased significantly in part because of insufficient supply of and growing demand for recycled PET (rPET) from brand owners. “I agree it needed to come up some,” she says of PET bottle bale pricing, “but not this quickly.”
Bill Keegan, president of material recovery facility (MRF) operator Dem-Con Cos., Shakopee, Minnesota, says PET bale pricing more than doubled in the first quarter of this year, as did pricing for polypropylene (PP) bales.
The new Ecolomondo Thermal Decomposition (TDP) in Hawkesbury will be the first of its kind in the world when it begins operations scheduled for later this summer.
The new plant, located just east of Tupper Street, is equipped with the latest technology and will be the first automotive tire recycling facility which will be able to completely recycle all materials from end of-life tires. The plant will produce marketable end-products: oil, steel, fiber, recycled carbon black and syngas, and will be equipped to secondary process them to improve their quality.
“(The plant) is the first of its kind that will be able to not only decompose the waste, but process it as well,” said Eliot Sorella, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Ecolomondo Corporation, in an interview with The Review. “It will be the first tire recycling plant in the world that decomposes, processes and resells all of the products from the waste for re-use by industry.” PostConsumerPET Petrochemicals Hydrogen
The term ‘turnkey’ comes from the fact the facility is delivered from conception to commissioning, with four departments – tire shredding, thermal decomposition, recycled carbon black and oil refining – that process and recycle tires down to their core raw materials. When in full operation – expected to be in late August or September – the plant will employ approximately 40 workers. All of the processes are contained within the facility, which is designed to be both green and operate in a safe environment for employees.
Nonwovens machinery manufacturer Dilo has received an order from Huafon Microfiber Co. for three complete, high capacity needling lines with for its new plant in Qidong, Jiangsu Province, China.
All three lines consist of DiloTemafa high capacity blending systems, DiloSpinnbau special card feeding systems and high capacity carding machines. The order also includes DiloMachines’ high speed crosslappers with special air-guide system for the best layering performance, as well as numerous DiloMachines needlelooms with Hyperpunch technology. Bayport Polymers LLC (Baystar) plans to start up its new polyethylene (PE) plant in Pasadena, Texas in the first quarter of 2020, reported S&P Global.
The new plant with a production capacity of 625,000 mt/year of high density polyethylene (HDPE) is now under construction, which began in 2019. The contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of the new unit had been awarded to McDermott, said the company on its site

The HDPE plant in Pasadena will receive feedstock from Baystar’s cracker in Port Arthur, a joint venture of France’s Total and Austria’s Borealis, with a capacity of 1 million mt/year, which is in the progress of start-up at the moment.
According to MRC’s ScanPlast report, Russia’s overall HDPE production totalled 653,500 tonnes in the first four months of 2021, up by 9% year on year. At the same time, only one Russian producer increased its HDPE output.
ETTLINGER has unveiled a new generation of tried-and-tested ECO products for use in PET recycling. Their new features take into account the need for systems with a higher product throughput and are initially available in sizes suitable for medium-sized recycling lines.
The new ECO 350 replaces the former ECO 250, while the new ECO 500, capable of achieving capacities of up to 4,000 kg/h, replaces the former ECO 250 Twin. The ECO 200 completes this range.
