With Evolon RE, Freudenberg Performance Materials (Freudenberg) is offering its customers a more sustainable version of its high-performance microfilament textiles. Evolon RE is manufactured from an average of 70% recycled polyester, which the company makes by recycling post-consumer PET bottles in-house. The material is available for various applications, including high-tech wiping and technical packaging, in weights currently ranging from 80g/sqm to 300g/sqm. It is claimed to offer the same quality as all other Evolon textiles. This applies to mechanical and textile properties as well as to filtration, cleaning and protection properties.
Freudenberg says that Evolon fabrics are very durable in most applications. The products are washable and re-usable and a very good substitute for disposable solutions. For example, high-tech Evolon cleaning cloths offer an unrivalled cleaning performance even after hundreds of washings. Technical packaging materials can be reused throughout the entire production program of a car model.

Researchers in the BOTTLE Consortium, including from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the University of Portsmouth, have identified using enzymes as a more sustainable approach for recycling polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a common plastic in single-use beverage bottles, clothing, and food packaging that are becoming increasingly relevant in addressing the environmental challenge of plastic pollution. An analysis shows enzyme-recycled PET has potential improvement over conventional, fossil-based methods of PET production across a broad spectrum of energy, carbon, and socioeconomic impacts. The concept, if further developed and implemented at scale, could lead to new opportunities for PET recycling and create a mechanism for recycling textiles and other materials also made from PET that are traditionally not recycled today. PET ranks among the most abundantly produced synthetic polymers in the world, with 82 million metric tons produced annually; roughly 54% of PET is used in the manufacture of textiles for clothing and fibers for carpet.
“From all the plastics that were produced since the 1950s, less than 10% of it has ever been recycled,” said Avantika Singh, a chemical engineer at NREL and first author of a new paper outlining the path toward enzyme-based recycling. “Most waste plastics end up in landfills.”

The plant set up at Toray’s new facilities at Prai has boosted Toray Plastics (Malaysia) Sdn. Berhad, TPM’s ABS resin production and distribution capacities by 75,000 metric tons per year (m.t./yr), to 425,000 m.t/yr. Taking into accounts the ABS production output at the Chiba Plant in Japan, Toray Group is now capable of churning out some 497,000 m.t./yr of ABS to the worldwide markets annually.
The diverse TOYOLAC range produced by Toray includes transparent grades ABS, offerings improved anti-static, scratch and chemical resistance properties. To boost sales in its key Chinese and Southeast Asian markets and in anticipation of the rising demands from Europe, the United States of America and India, Toray look forward to increasing its worldwide production further, including the facilities at TPM.
SK Global Chemical, the petrochemical arm of the South Korean conglomerate SK Innovation, has changed its name to SK Geo Centric as part of an effort to transform from “carbon to green.” Petrochemicals Regenerated Nylon
The firm says it aims to become the “world’s largest urban oilfield company,” sourcing its raw materials from plastic waste rather than petroleum.
SK plans to spend about $4.2 billion on recycling projects by 2025, when it hopes to be recycling 900,000 metric tons (t) of postconsumer plastic annually. It hopes to process 2.5 million t by 2027.
“The plastic waste problem should turn into an opportunity,” SK Geo Centric CEO Na Kyung-soo says in the firm’s rebranding announcement.
SK intends to achieve its goals largely through partnerships with recycling companies, many of which it has already lined up.
In August, SK said it will build a polypropylene recycling plant in South Korea that uses PureCycle Technologies’ purification process.
