-Biodegradable Plastics Won’t Put You on the Path to Circularity

There is nothing circular about compostable packaging, according to one expert on sustainability. In fact, biodegradable plastics ultimately add to greenhouse gas emissions.

Making plastics disappear — it’s the wish of many, especially resonant as Earth Day approaches, and the aim of numerous bans on single-use plastics and plastic bags.

But outside of banning plastics, creating biodegradable plastic products that compost into nothing at the end of their life might seem like a reasonable alternative — an additional tool in the quiver of green tactics.  Biodegradable-Plastics – DSM-Dyneema

Not so fast, cautions one expert.

While biodegradable plastics certainly exist — in fact, eight versions are vying for this year’s Tom Ford Plastic Innovation Prize — the fact that material science affords the opportunity to create plastics that disappear doesn’t necessarily make this the best course of action.

In fact, overall, biodegradable plastics ultimately add to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, said Bob Lilienfeld, Executive Director of the Sustainable Packaging Research, Information, and Networking Group (SPRING) in Broomfield, CO.

“The issue isn’t whether or not material is available,” Lilienfeld asserted. “The issue is whether or not it makes any kind of sense. If you’re a believer in the concept of the circular economy, there is nothing circular about compostable packaging. It’s designed to end up in an industrial or home compost facility — the result of which is greenhouse gases.”

In an October 2021 presentation titled, “Avoiding the Plastics Biodegradation Minefield,” Lilienfeld stressed several caveats and clarifications when discussing the concept of compostable plastics, to wit:

Biodegradation occurs when materials are broken down by bacteria, fungi, or other biological means.

Biodegradation is not the same as composting, and industrial and home composting are not the same. Some materials that are industrial compostable are not home compostable.

In fact, to be considered “industrial compostable,” Lilienfeld explained, a plastic product must meet ASTM-D6400 or EN 13432 standards by biodegrading 90% in 180 days in aerobic conditions  or disintegrating 90% in 12 weeks (ISO 16929).

-Avient Announces Agreement to Acquire DSM Protective Materials (Dyneema®) and Plans to Explore Sale of Distribution

Avient Corporation , a leading provider of specialized and sustainable material solutions, today announced that it has entered into an agreement with Royal DSM (“DSM”) to purchase the DSM Protective Materials business (including the Dyneema® brand) (the “Dyneema business”). The purchase price of $1.485 billion is subject to certain customary adjustments. The foundation of the protective materials business of DSM is the renowned technology and globally admired brand of Dyneema®, the World’s Strongest Fiber™. The ultra-lightweight specialty fiber is 15 times stronger than steel and is used in demanding applications such as ballistic personal protection, marine and sustainable infrastructure, renewable energy, industrial protection and outdoor sports.  Estimated sales and EBITDA for the Dyneema business in 2022 are approximately $415 million and $130 million, respectively.  The business includes six production facilities, four R&D centers and approximately 1,000 employees located around the world.

Excluding intangible amortization, the acquisition will be immediately accretive to EPS, adding approximately $0.35 per share on a pro forma basis for 2022. Further, Avient’s composites platform with the Dyneema business will represent over 50% of the company’s Specialty Engineered Materials segment sales.

“In conjunction with our intent to acquire Dyneema, we plan to explore a potential sale of our distribution business,” said Mr. Patterson. “This would allow Avient to remain modestly levered at 2.9x adjusted EBITDA while also expanding adjusted EBITDA margins from 12% to 18%, the highest amongst our formulator peers.”

The acquisition has been approved by the Boards of Directors at both Avient and DSM and is expected to close later this year, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions. Biodegradable-Plastics – DSM-Dyneema

Committed financing for the acquisition is being provided by Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan. Jones Day served as outside legal counsel to Avient.

This week, PVC prices dropped in Asia. The price fall was on the back of lower import offers from overseas suppliers coupled with continued lacklustre buying trends in the region.

Weaker upstream ethylene values further supported the price drop.

In China, PVC prices were assessed at the USD 1340-1370/mt CFR levels, a fall of USD (-20/mt) from the previous week.

In China, a Taiwanese producer has offered its PVC resin suspension grade at the USD 1340/mt levels for shipment in May 2022.

In South East Asia, PVC prices were assessed at the USD 1380-1440/mt CFR levels, a week on week decrease of USD (-20/mt).

In Vietnam, a South Asian producer has offered its PVC resin suspension grade in the range of USD 1380-1440/mt levels for shipment in May 2022

In India, PVC prices were assessed at the USD 1500-1570/mt CFR levels, a sharp fall of USD (-40/mt) from the previous week. Buying trends were reported to be soft in the open markets of India.

In India, domestic producers have reduced their PVC resin suspension grade prices by Rs.6/kg basic, with effect from April 19, 2022.

A producer from China has offered its PVC resin suspension grade in India at the USD 1500/mt levels for shipment in May 2022. A Taiwanese producer has offered its PVC resin suspension grade at the USD 1570/mt levels for shipment in May 2022. In Sri Lanka, PVC prices were assessed at the USD 1620-1680/mt CFR levels, down USD (-20/mt) from last week.

In Bangladesh, PVC prices were assessed at the USD 1620-1670/mt CFR levels, a week on week fall of USD (-30/mt).

In Bangladesh, a Taiwanese producer has offered its PVC resin suspension grade at the USD 1620/mt levels for shipment in May 2022.

In Pakistan, PVC prices were assessed at the USD 1580-1670/mt CFR levels, a fall of USD (-20/mt) from the previous week.

We remind that in May 2020, Borealis started production of meltblown fabrics for face mask applications on its unique pilot line in Linz, Austria. Textiles have fourth largest climate impact

“According to the European Environmental Agency, textile has the region’s fourth largest climate impact, following only food, housing and transport industries. The average European throws away 11 kilograms of textiles every year”, explains ESMA CEO Peter Buttiens in a press release.

“Different international bodies throw their weight behind changing this. For example, the EU is introducing a digital product passport to boost circular economy. This forms an incentive for every step of textile production and workflow, to stimulate creative reuse, recycling and repurposing of materials and end products,” adds Buttiens.

The new conference for textile printing and sustainability looks at all critical factors and global trends that influence textile market conditions today and in the nearest future: customer-made fashion, responsible businesses, quality concerns, customisation and personalisation.

The event brings together industry experts from two main printing processes – screen and inkjet – to promote best practices, discuss new application fields and explain benefits and challenges of individual technology choices.

So far, 40 presentations and 50 networking stands have been confirmed. -Yizheng Chemical Fiber starting the construction of an intelligent PSF project

On Apr 12, Yizheng Chemical Fiber started the construction of the main unit of an intellegent direct-spun PSF project. Besides the main unit-230kt/yr polyester production line, the project includes four lines of 25kt/yr PSF for spunlace nonwoven and four lines of 33kt/yr low-melting PSF which will start up later.

Over the past month, China domestic PE plant operating rate has plummeted, with the operating rate of 68.87% on April 12, falling directly below the 70% level, the lowest at least since Dec 2013.  Chemical-Fiber – Bacteriostatic-masterbatch

The operating rate has dropped sharply, on the one hand, it is because that the PE producers cut production since March due to high oil prices, which have been basically implemented up to now; on the other hand, it is currently close to the spring turnaround season of some petrochemical plants.

At present, the shutdown plants in China are as follows, involving a total production capacity of 7.11 million tons.

So, in the case of such a low operating rate, does it mean that the opportunity for PE to rebound has come?

Although supply is tight, demand is being suppressed at the same time. On the one hand, affected by the pandemic, logistics and transportation in some regions had been restricted, both the cross-regional allocation of raw materials and the delivery of finished products have been affected. Moreover, some reservoir areas in Jiangsu and Zhejiang are in closed or controlled areas, resulting in certain restrictions on downstream delivery. On the other hand, spring ploughing in the north basically ends in mid-April, the peak demand season for agricultural plastic film is coming to an end, and the demand is gradually weakening in the later period.

Currently, PE plant operating rate is on the low side, China domestic supply decreases significantly and demand weakens gradually. Moreover, international crude oil price fluctuate widely in the current turbulent international situation, the market still has to balance the relationship between the cost side and the supply and demand side, and PE market may keep range-bound.
