Tecnimont Private Limited and NEXTCHEM have launched India’s inaugural green hydrogen plant for GAIL, producing 4.3 tons daily

This aligns with India’s Hydrogen Mission to generate 5 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030, supporting India’s energy independence by 2047 and Net Zero by 2070 goals.

The plant, located in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, is a significant stride towards low carbon energy solutions in India. The facility, awarded in May 2022 and implemented by Tecnimont Private Limited in collaboration with NEXTCHEM, will produce green hydrogen via 10 megawatt-based electrolysers, making GAIL the first to start megawatt-scale operations for green hydrogen production. Green hydrogen, a strategic enabler of the energy transition, can be used for long-duration storage of renewable energy, replacing fossil fuels in industry, clean transportation, and potentially for decentralized power generation, aviation, and marine transport.

Vijaipur Green Hydrogen will serve as NEXTCHEM’s benchmark plant for pursuing additional energy transition opportunities in India. MAIRE Group CEO, Alessandro Bernini, expressed pride in this achievement, which positions MAIRE favorably in India for prospects in the energy transition space, having contributed to the implementation of the country’s largest green hydrogen plant. Nestle’s packing goal shift reveals mass-scale plastic problem, infrastructure concerns remain: Report

At a time when less than 10% of all plastic waste is recycled globally, companies are cutting their targets. About 400 million tons of plastic waste are produced globally every year, as focus on profitability and rising input costs remain.

When Nestle SA tweaked its plastic packaging goals in 2022, few noticed. The shift in language on the website of the world’s largest food maker pledged to mostly use plastic “designed for” recycling by 2025 rather than only use “recyclable” or reusable packaging by next year — its original commitment. Green hydrogen

The subtle rewording, highlighted publicly here for the first time, might seem like semantics. But the difference amounts to 280,000 metric tons of additional non-recyclable plastic waste a year, according to the latest available data for 2022. Piled up, it would weigh the same as 30 Eiffel towers or 1,400 Statues of Liberty.

It’s also a fresh indication that the efforts to curb the use of virgin plastics — including a key pledge made by dozens of companies since 2018 to make all such packaging recyclable, reusable or compostable — are failing. Green hydrogen

The rolling back of some commitments coincides with companies facing pressure from two years of rising raw material costs and investor calls to focus on profitability over saving the planet.

BRICS expresses concern over unilateral sanctions

The member states of BRICS have voiced concern over the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures inconsistent with the UN Charter. Green hydrogen

According to a Friday report by the TASS News Agency, BRICS lawmakers have issued a statement at the plenary session of the X BRICS Parliamentary Forum, expressing concern over the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures inconsistent with the UN Charter.

We recognize the negative impact of unilateral approaches that violate international law on the global economy and sustainable development, the statement read. Green hydrogen

We express our concern about the use of unilateral coercive measures that are inconsistent with the principles of the UN Charter and have a negative impact on economic growth, trade, energy, health, and food security, especially in developing countries, the document said.

The participants of the Forum expressed their support for an open, transparent, fair, inclusive, equitable, non-discriminatory, and rules-based multilateral trading system, in which the World Trade Organization (WTO) plays a central role. Green hydrogen

BRICS lawmakers also called for the importance of strengthening economic and financial security, achieving the national development goals of the member states and the BRICS Economic Partnership Strategy by 2025.

The parties also reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and respect for international law, including the purposes and principles enshrined in the UN Charter.

The First PEF World Congress

Polyethylene furanoate (PEF) is a cutting-edge polyester made entirely from plant-based raw materials. It is recyclable and heralded as the future of packaging, especially for food, beverages, textiles, and more. Green hydrogen

To spotlight this innovation, the trade magazine Renewable Carbon Plastics, formerly known as bioplastics Magazine, in collaboration with PEFerence, is organizing the 1st PEF World Congress. This global event will take place on 30-31 October 2024 in Düsseldorf, Germany, with options for online participation. The hybrid conference promises high-quality presentations from industry leaders across the value chain, covering topics such as HMF, FDCA, PEF applications, and end-of-life solutions. Attendees can also expect excellent networking opportunities and a table-top exhibition. Green hydrogen

PEF is often compared to PET due to their similar chemical structures, both being polyesters derived from ethylene glycol (MEG) and an aromatic diacid—furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) for PEF and terephthalic acid for PET. However, PEF’s unique molecular composition results in several distinct advantages.

It boasts a 50% lower carbon footprint compared to PET and superior barrier properties against oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water, leading to longer shelf life for packaged products. Additionally, PEF has a lower melting temperature, higher glass transition temperature, and greater mechanical strength than PET. It can be processed using existing PET equipment and methods, with identical recycling processes.

PEF’s versatility extends to stretch blow molding of bottles and the production of fibers, films, and biaxially oriented (BOPEF) film. Green hydrogen

MEG Market: Bullish Outlook for H2 2024

The monoethylene glycol (MEG) prices firmed this week along with the rises in futures prices. Here are the key factors driving this performance and provides a forward-looking assessment for H2 2024. Green hydrogen

  1. Inventory Trends:

MEG tank inventory in East China port continues to decline, with total stocks at approximately 749kt on Monday, down 12kt week-over-week. Notably, Ningbo port saw a significant decrease of 16kt.

  1. Near-Term Supply Constraints:

Incoming shipments over the next two weeks are projected to be limited, with major ports expecting only around 110kt. This suggests a potential for further inventory drawdowns in the short term. Green hydrogen

  1. H2 2024 Supply-Demand Balance:

MEG supply-demand structure is expected to improve in H2 2024. Factoring in planned maintenance shutdowns and the current status of idle capacity, we anticipate a sustained de-stocking trend, particularly pronounced in Q4.

Key operational updates include:

**ZPC expected to resume normal operations from July**-Zhenhai Refining & Chemical to normalize operations from September Green hydrogen

**Hubei Sanning to switch to ammonia production from August

**Gulei Petrochemical scheduled for one-month maintenance in November

**Fujian Refining & Petrochemical to undergo 52-day maintenance starting early November

**Satellite Petrochemical to increase output in July

  1. Polyester Operating Rates:

Polyester plant operating rates are conservatively estimated, factoring in PFY production cut in July-August, and potential cutbacks in Q4 due to compressed bottle-grade chip margins. Green hydrogen
