-Gneuss Kunststofftechnik: PET recycling with MRSjump – Decontamination and IV control in one step

Currently, the recycling of post-consumer PET Bottle Flake is well established and it has become a sought after secondary meantime. Increasingly, the focus is shifting toward using other sources of PET waste for recycling, such as post-industrial fibre waste and to other post-consumer sources of PET, such as thermoformed pots, tubs and trays. Additives Automotive Chemicals

The important difference in recycling these materials is that whereas with PET bottle flake, a certain IV drop extrusion is acceptable, the IV of fibre waste or thermoformed pots, tubs and trays is at a level that any further IV drop would result in unacceptable mechanical properties. Typically, the only answer is to install a complicated and/or energy intensive liquid phase or solid state IV boosting processes downstream of the extruder.

The Gneuss MRS extruder for PET offers unparalleled decontamination performance (and has food contact approval for post-consumer waste without the need for any additional thermal treatment of the material). In addition to this, the new MRSjump version of this extruder provides a drastically increased surface exchange rate under vacuum so that partial polycondensation takes place within the extruder and it is possible to retain the input IV.

-Italy plastics tax: latest developments

Italy’s €450/tonne tax on virgin plastics due to come into effect on 1 July 2021 has been postponed to January 2022, several sources in the country have said.

Sources in the polystyrene (PS) and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET) markets told ICIS new draft legislation that was being passed through the Ministry of Economy and Finance last week proposing the new implementation date had now been approved, and the tax will commence at the beginning of next year.

The tax has been postponed several times already.

The tax will apply to all virgin plastics, but not to recycled plastics or compostable bioplastics. Additives Automotive Chemicals

A similar tax in the Spanish market that was proposed to start in July 2021 is now also thought to have been pushed back to later this year or early next, according to R-PET sources in Spain

The UK will introduce a £200/tonne plastics packaging tax on 1 April 2022.

-BioPlas founder seeks capital to expand production of degradable bio-plastics

BioPlas is one of the most interesting and inspiring projects of the Shark Tank TV Show series, where startups meet “sharks” to seek investors.

Nguyen Chau Long, CEO and founder of BioPlas, took part in the show with his ambitious project on creating plastic made of biological materials which can replace disposable plastic. Additives Automotive Chemicals

The bioplastic has the ability to decompose, thereby avoiding the problem of microplastics now plaguing the world.

A survey found that Vietnam consumes 938 million plastic bags weekly, while a report released two years ago showed that Vietnam ranked the 17th out of 109 countries in the amount of plastic waste discharged every year.

Bioplas products have received an OK Compost certificate from Europe and the US.

BioPlas has created bioplastics used for producing soft packaging, including T-shirt bags, food bags and gloves, and for trays, cups, glasses and spoons.

-Reopening demand, low inventories to flatten PE, PP cycle – LyondellBasell CEO

The story below was our most read article in the last 12 hours.

A surge in demand from economies reopening along with lack of major new capacity in the US and Europe in the coming years should result in a flattening of the cycle for polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), the CEO of LyondellBasell said.

“Longer term, as we go into 2022 and 2023, US prices could moderate as the supply situation improves, but I still think that’s Q4 onwards. Q2 and Q3 will remain very tight,” said Bob Patel, CEO of LyondellBasell, in an interview with ICIS.

The debate today is on whether prices and operating rates will moderate or reset lower, he noted. Additives Automotive Chemicals

“I’m in the moderation camp… because demand is growing at a very good rate. We’re in the early stages of a recovery and there are so many end products that are in backlog today, including cars and furniture. The entire value chain has less inventory today,” said Patel.

The reopening of economies around the world is still to come with Europe and India largely still locked down, along with parts of Asia and Latin America.

-SACMI technology for the profitable use of recycled-PET

To fill the wait until the next edition of the NPE fair in Orlando, USA (cancelled due to COVID), SACMI will hold (20 May 2021) an international webinar in collaboration with Beverage Industry magazine. Additives Automotive Chemicals

A great opportunity to strengthen partnerships with US customers by focusing on solutions that ensure high quality preforms where high percentages of rPET are used, a major challenge for manufacturers in this sector.

Unfortunately, the international disruption caused by the SARS-COV-2 pandemic has stopped the NPE fair in Orlando in its tracks.

But not SACMI, which on 20 May 2021 at 11 am EDT will host “How to turn PET/rPET Preform Quality Control into a Profitable Advantage”, an event co-organized with the international magazine Beverage Industry.

-Exclusive-Tesla in talks with China’s EVE for low-cost battery supply deal – sources

Tesla Inc is in talks with Chinese battery maker EVE Energy Co to add the firm to its Shanghai factory supply chain, four people familiar with the matter said, as it seeks to boost procurement of lower cost batteries.

EVE makes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are cheaper to produce because they use iron instead of more expensive nickel and cobalt.

But LFP batteries generally offer a shorter range on a single charge than the more popular nickel/cobalt alternative. Additives Automotive Chemicals

EVE would become the second supplier of LFP batteries to Tesla after China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co (CATL).

The talks are advanced and the Palo Alto, California-based company is seeking to finalise the partnership in the third quarter, said two of the people.

Shenzhen-listed EVE is running some final-stage tests of its products for Tesla, said one person.

Shares of the Chinese battery firm jumped more than 10% in afternoon trade on Friday following the Reuters report about the talks.

-Aimplas develops microplastics analysis methodology

Aimplas is now implementing the MICROPLASTICS_2020 Project, funded by the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE). The aim of which is to develop a standardised methodology to detect, identify and quantify microplastics to monitor their presence in the different stages of industrial processes.

The level of analytical technology and knowledge required is so high that companies must seek the help of experts at highly specialised centres. This project reinforces businesses with a greater capacity to take action on their materials and processes to reduce the possible presence and production of microplastics, and they will be better prepared to anticipate future legislation. Additives Automotive Chemicals

Restrictions on the presence, use and production of microplastics in industrial processes should involve defining protocols for analysing microplastics and standardising these protocols.

For Aimplas, this project is the starting point of a new line of research in which companies in the Autonomous Community of Valencia will be able to participate by contributing case studies and information on their production processes. The following companies are collaborating on the project: Agua Mineral San Benedetto, Global Omnium and Acteco Productos y Servicios.

-Organic benefits of algae

Spunmelt nonwovens producer Avgol is collaborating with Algaeing, the Berlin-based developer of patented algae bio-based formulations for colorants and fibres.

The focus is on modifying the aesthetic qualities of sustainable polyolefin based spunbond and meltblown fabrics. Additives Automotive Chemicals

Algaeing’s technologies utilise various algae species to produce a wide range of appealing colours, many of which replicate those used in nonwoven fabrics today. The benefits of using an algae bio-source go far beyond the removal of chemically synthesized colorants, and include vastly reduced water consumption, chemical/fertilizer use, and carbon dioxide emissions.

“We’re very excited to bring our technology into the realm of spunlaid nonwovens,” said Renana Krebs, CEO of Algaeing. “The opportunities to utilise our technology in Avgol’s sustainable component materials and bring colour, as well as the skin wellness attributes of algae-derived products into personal care items is an opportunity to reduce human impact around the world on a large scale.”
