OC Oerlikon : Automotive supplier Sailuda integrates backwards in BCF yarn production

Chinese automotive supplier Sailuda is expanding its process chain with the commissioning of a Oerlikon Neumag BCF plant. In future, the specialist for automotive interiors will produce its own BCF yarns. The company is thus integrating the entire process from the yarn to the finished carpet and can therefore better influence production and quality of its car carpets. Automotive

Researchers develop fabric that generates electricity from body heat

The fabric offers possibilities for health checks, and activity tracking.

In the near future, there could be coats made from smart fabric that use the sun’s energy to keep us warm.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo showcased one such smart fabric technology.

This innovative material has been designed to convert both body heat and sunlight into electricity. And the best part? This technology eliminates the need for bulky batteries to power the cloth. This makes it an easy-to-wear, stretchy fabric. Automotive

The smart fabric’s functionality can be enhanced when integrated with sensors. This way, the fabric could be used to monitor heart rate and temperature, and even detect chemicals in your breath.

“We have developed a fabric material with multifunctional sensing capabilities and self-powering potential. Automotive

This innovation brings us closer to practical applications for smart fabrics,” said Yuning Li, a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

Shinkong Synthetic Fibers invests $10M in Ambercycle facility

Ambercycle says Shinkong’s investment builds upon three years of collaboration between the companies. Automotive

Shinkong Synthetic Fibers Corporation, a Taipei, Taiwan-based manufacturer of polyester, has invested $10 million into Los Angeles-based material science company Ambercycle’s first commercial facility.

Ambercycle says Shinkong’s investment builds upon three years of collaboration and will help expand global production capacity for its material made from end-of-life textiles called Cycora. Automotive

“This investment signifies a crucial milestone in our endeavor to make circular materials widely available,” Ambercycle Co-founder and CEO Shay Sethi says. “We are excited to deepen our partnership with Shinkong. This investment enables us to scale up to meet the growing demand of our customers and push the boundaries of sustainable textile production.”

According to Ambercycle, demand for decarbonized polyester is expected to reach approximately 7 million metric tons (approximately 7.7 million tons) annually in 2026, up from 5 million metric tons (approximately 5.5 tons) in 2015, as more brands seek out circular materials to reach their sustainability goals. Spandex demand analysis from downstream operation in H1 2024

From 2021 to 2024, supply of spandex in Chinese mainland has maintained a continuous double-digit growth rate, and the growth of production capacity is still “climbing.” In contrast, the growth rate of demand has shown significant fluctuations over the five-year period, resembling a deep “V” shape. Notably, substantial price declines and macroeconomic disturbances led to 2022 being a rare year of negative growth for spandex demand. Although demand for spandex still showed double-digit growth in 2023 and the first half of 2024, there remains a discrepancy between the average growth rates of demand and capacity over the past four years Automotive

In the first half of 2024, words such as slow sales, poor domestic sales, and unsold inventory continued to be high-frequency terms in the spandex market. The spandex industry has undergone continuous adjustments for three years since the high prosperity cycle of 2021. For example, the price difference between spandex 40D, previously considered an upscale fiber, and nylon DTY or imported cotton yarn is now minimal. The mainstream price for 40D is around 25,500- 27,000yuan/mt, while a few differentiated products are slightly higher. Automotive

What is the operating rate of downstream weaving and knitting mills in the first half of 2024? At what level is the growth rate of domestic demand for spandex?
