-South Korea’s Hyosung to make nylon textile by recycling fishing nets

South Korean fibre manufacturer, Hyosung, has teamed up with a municipal government to release a new nylon textile made of abandoned fishing nets.

The company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Busan metropolitan government and a social venture, Netspa, to produce eco-friendly textile by recycling abandoned fishing nets.

The partnership was formed to reduce the pollution of marine ecosystems caused by abandoned fishing nets as well as to improve awareness about the protection of the marine environment.

The city government will establish a system for separate disposal of abandoned fishing nets, while Netspa will be in charge of washing and processing the collected fishing nets, Hyosung said in a press release.

The Centre for International Environmental Law estimates that only one per cent of the 359 million tonnes of plastic produced each year are biodegradable. This is despite the media’s efforts to portray the ugly truth of beaches strewn with bags and bottles, and ocean life trapped by plastic rings from an eight-pack of lager. Less considered, however, is the impact of petroleum-based plastic production on the environment.

Oil and gas industries use fossil fuels such as ethylene and propylene, which release toxic gas and do not degrade. To tackle this, fuel industries created poly(butylene succinate), a biodegradable ‘eco alternative’. However, its status as being eco-friendly is debatable because of its petrochemical precursors.

Germany-based recycler of acrylic sheet and PC scrap pekutherm GmbH has collaborated with ClimatePartner to offset more than 33,000kg of CO2 from its PC production line by supporting a recognised climate protection project in India.

Although many climate protection measures have been put into practice, factors such as raw materials, packaging, logistics and disposal continue to generate emissions which it has not so far been possible to avoid.

The collaboration has concluded that the PC line’s carbon footprint adds up to 33,640kg of CO2 over the course of a year. Biodegradability Automotive Plasticwaste

The aim of the climate protection project supported by pekutherm, Clean drinking water Odisha, India, is to eliminate the need for open fires used throughout rural areas to boil and sterilise contaminated water. The smoke causes respiratory disease while the consumption of large volumes of firewood leads to the increasing deforestation of entire regions and the release of large amounts of greenhouse gases. The project organises water treatment, by both mechanical filtration and chemical purification using a chloride solution produced on site. The treated water is available at low cost in small village shops or is delivered to homes.

-Lanxess announced force majeure in the USA for the supply of polyamide and PBT

Lanxess has announced force majeure in the United States regarding the supply of PA 6, PA 6.6 and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), according to the company’s letter to customers.

The company said the declining supply of raw materials and current product supply chain problems are affecting its ability to supply its Durethan A PA 6.6, Durethan B PA 6 and Pocan grade PBT.  Biodegradability Automotive Plasticwaste

PA supplies to the US were very limited after a winter storm in mid-February due to production constraints and good demand.

Earlier it was reported that Lanxess  announcedforce majeure on the supply of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) to Uentrop (Uentrop, Germany) due to a lack of raw materials. According to a company spokesman, Lanxess closed the production of PBT with a capacity of 80 thousand tons per year on April 15 at its plant in Germany. The plant is a joint venture with DuPont known as DuBay Polymer. Production is expected to resume at the end of May.

-Pratrivero to install Andritz stitchbonding technology

International technology Group Andritz has received an order from Pratrivero s.p.a. to supply a new eXcelle batt forming line for their production facilities in Valdilana, Italy.  Biodegradability Automotive Plasticwaste

The line will be dedicated to the production of Maliwatt products, used in furnishing, automotive, naval, medical, geotextiles, advertising, clothing, and packaging applications. Installation and start-up are scheduled for the third quarter of 2021.

The Andritz batt forming line includes an eXcelle card and eXcelle crosslapper, a ProDyn web profiling correction system as well as a scanning gauge with a closed loop. The ProDyn system combines actions from the card doffers with dynamic speed variation at the crosslapper. This, says Andritz, will result in substantial fibre savings and reduction in CV%, providing improved weight evenness in the final product.

The ProDyn closed loop is also designed to ensure the best possible self-regulation for the equipment ensuring the production of high quality fabrics. Pratrivero will be the world’s first company to use the ProDyn technology in the Maliwatt stitchbonding process.

Consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies have pledged to boost use of recycled content and fallen short to meet their pledges promised time after time as recycled materials are unavailable. The recycling pledges made for 2025 are proving to be, once again, unrealistic and unachievable declarations.

According to Closed Loop Partners, the current supply of recycled plastics would meet just 6% of companies pledged goals. Continuing failed approaches doesn’t lead to a path for success. Today the packaging industry is finding itself needing to manage fake news and scientifically unwarranted social media hype that plastic is harmful. This situation is causing CPGs and packaging Suppliers to scramble and many industry players are darting in different and short-term directions in the hope of avoiding being a target of negative publicity. Short-term thinking is exacerbating problems with waste and recycling while avoiding the facts that CPGs need to grow and that they will continue to need a variety of packaging materials including plastics. The problem will not be solved through bans and taxes. We need robust and agile solutions that can handle existing and ongoing innovation that leads to growing diversity of packaging materials.

-SK Chemicals buys 10% stake in Chinese recycled plastic firm

SK Chemicals said Monday that it acquired a 10 percent stake in Shuye, a Chinese firm that specializes in recycling plastic waste, to commercialize eco-friendly plastic called glycolmodified polyethylene terephthalate, or PETG.

PETG is a plastic free of environmental hormone bisphenol A, an industrial chemical used to manufacture typical plastic. PETG offers the same transparency as glass but offers greater durability. PETG made by SK Chemicals is currently supplied to global cosmetics brands including Johnson & Johnson, Estée Lauder and L‘Oréal.

The 23-billion-won ($20.2 million) deal will give SK Chemicals the exclusive rights on Shuye’s recycled PETG raw materials and products in South Korean market. Also, Shuye will be obligated to supply 20,000 metric tons of recycled PETG raw materials to SK Chemicals first.  Biodegradability Automotive Plasticwaste

“In the third quarter, SK Chemicals will roll out recycled PETG product Ecotria and expand the ratio of recycled product to 50 percent by 2025,” a company official said. SK Chemicals currently has a PETG production facility in Ulsan.

Key players in clothing design, recycling technologies and consumer behaviour have come together in a new project in Denmark to make textiles circular. The project involves breaking down worn, damaged or new clothes that are discarded into raw materials to create new textiles or other products. The focal point is sustainability in the textile industry – and recycling of all textile waste in Denmark. The project is called ReSuit (Recycling Technologies and Sustainable Textile Product Design), and is supported by the Innovation Fund with DKK 13 million (€ 1.8 million). The project has a total budget of DKK 22.8 million.

The consortium includes partners within clothing and textiles (Bestseller, Elis and Designskolen Kolding), raw material production (A/S Dansk Shell), consumer behaviour (Naboskab) and new recycling technologies (Fraunhofer, Danish Technological Institute and Aarhus University).

-Spandex market keeps hot

Price of spandex has increased for 3 quarters. Price of spandex 20D hiked by as high as 152% to current 84,000yuan/mt from 33,300yuan/mt in early-Aug, 2020, and that of spandex 40D surged by 134% to current 65,000yuan/mt from 27,800yuan/mt in early-Aug, 2020. Soaring spandex price was mainly due to low capacity expansion, mismatch of supply and demand, growing demand from ear band of mask, hot foreign orders in the second half of 2020 and sound demand for stretch fabrics for sportswear and yoga clothes.  Biodegradability Automotive Plasticwaste

Price of spandex 20D rose by 5,000yuan/mt or 6.3% in Q2 2021 and the increment of 30D was at 2% amid tightness, mainly stimulated by high-density circular knitting market and fine covered yarn market. Price of spandex 40D was in fluctuation. Price of medium-denier spandex for lace knitting and so on reduced by 2,000yuan/mt or 3.1%. Spandex market remained sellers’ market with low stocks. Sales ratio was high and price of conventional varieties was raised further although downstream buyers retreated to sideline. Price of medium-to-coarse denier spandex inched down with slower sales.
