Last year more than 70 thousand tons of biopolymers were transformed, a volume that grew by 86% in the last five years. Bioshopper for the first time exceed illegal bags.

This sector, still unripe and niche compared to that of traditional plastics, is however recording good growth rates, thanks to a mix of innovation, a growing interest in sustainability by big brands and consumers, regulations that aim to accelerate the transition from single-use plastics to biodegradable ones, both nationally and in the community.

In the last five years, according to the report, the transformation of bioplastics in Italy has increased by + 86% to reach 73 thousand tons last year (compared to 61,000 tons in 2016 and 39,000 tons in 2012), while the business increased by 49% from € 367 million in 2012 to € 545 million last year.

The number of companies also increased over the five-year period, 240 (+ 69% compared to 143 in 2012) and the number of employees, equal to 2,450 units (+ 92%).
