-New partnership to build Victoria recycling plant
Pact Group, Cleanaway, Asahi Beverages and Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) have formed a new joint venture to build a new PET plastic recycling facility in Altona North.
Construction of the plant, which is set to be the largest of its kind in Victoria, will start in early 2002 and finish in 2023, with more than 100 local jobs to be created while it is being built and 45 permanent roles once the plant opens.
Robert Iervasi, Asahi Beverages Group CEO, said: “We are constructing this facility to help create a truly circular economy in Victoria and beyond. Our consumers can now have increased confidence that when they dispose of their plastic water or soft drink bottle, it will be recycled instead of going to landfill. It’s not every day that drinks companies announce they’re building a new recycling plant but we want to help create meaningful change.”Chemical recycling – BioPlastics technology
Federal Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley and Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio announced $6 million dollars towards the project from a total pool of $36.5 million in joint funding for projects under the Australian Government’s Recycling Modernisation Fund (RMF) and the Victorian Government’s Recycling Victoria Infrastructure Fund.

Online monitoring helps reduce corrective and preventive maintenance
Solvay, a global leader in materials, chemicals, and solutions, hired Radix to develop a system to monitor online the performance of its equipment at the Paulínia unit, São Paulo (Brazil) chemical production unit. The new system will help reduce corrective and preventive maintenance orders, increase productivity, and improve plant reliability.Chemical recycling – BioPlastics technology
Radix built the system using the AVEVA OSIsoft PI System and hybrid AI models to calculate performance indicators in real-time, and identify possible failures in 145 pieces of equipment. The project evaluated all equipment, revealing the best efficiency points, and how to avoid failures related to operational deviation or possible anomalies. User-friendly dashboards were built to allow a visual understanding of the problem, what action should be taken, and the execute virtual maintenance rounds.
“With the system, it is possible to assess the health of equipment 24 hours, from anywhere with access to Solvay’s network and the PI System. In addition to the dashboards, there is also support for automatic emails, with notifications sent if a device enters a condition outside its normal operating range. Before the project, these kind of problems could not be foreseen,” said the project coordinator, Diego Paes from RadixChemical recycling – BioPlastics technology
By implementing the solution, Solvay’s goal is to reduce emergency work from 16% (based on the 2018 report) to 5% by 2022. The project also reduced preventive maintenance and increased efficiency on some equipment by optimizing best process conditions.
