-Safilo and Aquafil in partnership for eco-sustainable eyewear (Italian Language Only)

Safilo, one of the world leaders in the design, production and distribution of glasses, announces the introduction of ECONYL regenerated nylon in the eyewear collections, thanks to a pioneering partnership with Aquafil, a global player with over fifty years of experience in the creation of synthetic fibers .
ECONYL is a regenerated nylon obtained through the regeneration and purification process of plastic waste, such as fishing nets, synthetic fabric waste and industrial plastic.

ECONYL, obtained through a depolymerization and repolymerization process, has the same characteristics as nylon from virgin or petroleum sources, without any difference in quality or performance, and can be recycled, recreated and remodeled several times, without losing its properties .

The choice of this material, never used before in the industrial production of glasses, is a sign of Safilo’s further progress in the sustainability strategy and its commitment to pursuing innovation as a driver of growth and development.

-New synthetic bioplastic blocks UV radiations with better airtightness

The transparency of the bioplastic is still good.

Plastic, despite the greener initiatives, remains the king in many industries and also in the daily lives of the citizens. The alternative is a bioplastic, a new type of plastic made from plants or other biological materials instead of petroleum.

Now, a team of researchers at Finland’s University of Oulu has developed new synthetic bioplastic that, unlike traditional carbon-based plastics or other bioplastics, provides protection from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. It not just blocks the harmful UV radiations, but is also 3-4 times more airtight than the standard PET plastic. The transparency of the bioplastic is still good.

-Lotte Chemical : Govt refuses to allow raw material import from India

Amid a trade standoff with the neighbouring country, the government has refused to allow South Korean firm Lotte Chemical Pakistan import of raw material from India.

According to officials of the Commerce Division, Lotte Chemical Pakistan Limited – a major South Korean investment in Pakistan – had approached the Ministry of Commerce, seeking permission to import 40,000 tons of paraxylene from India, which is a raw material for manufacturing pure terephthalic acid (PTA). This raw material is not produced locally and it needs to be imported. Chemicals Biodegradable Polyamide PET

-With an investment of 100 crore INR, Uflex is scaling up its recycling strength to help build a circular economy, by the way of setting up two lines that wash and recycle post-consumer waste.

This pilot plant in its Noida facility is aimed to mitigate the piling plastic dumps in Delhi–NCR by recycling collected post-consumer waste PET bottles and multi-layer plastic packaging into chips and granules, put into further use to make products with economic value. The plant has the capacity to recycle 9600 tonnes of PET bottles and 10,000 tonnes of multi-layer plastic waste per annum.

Uflex claims to manufacture more than 100 products using the recycled plastic waste. This initiative is in line with the company’s global sustainability campaign Project Plastic Fix, where waste is converted into wealth.Chemicals Biodegradable Polyamide PET

-Quinn launches food-grade PET packaging made from 100% recycled material

Quinn Packaging is continuing its drive to improve the sustainability of plastic food packaging with the development of its newest product, Orbital.

The product is produced using 100% recycled PET material and is reportedly fully suitable for food packaging applications.

Quinn received certification to manufacture food-grade PET packaging made from 100% recycled material from the European Food Safety Authority in July 2019, paving the way for their newest product line.Chemicals Biodegradable Polyamide PET

Traditionally, according to the company, PET food packaging was manufactured using a combination of virgin PET polymer and recycled PET material.

-Plastic and carbon proposals to help plug Brexit budget gap

National contributions from member states to the next long-term EU budget could soon partly depend on the amount of plastic put into circulation that is not recycled.

If the proposal is agreed by member states, the EU could kill two birds with one stone – increasing the EU budget, while contributing to the goals of the Green Deal.

The last “negotiating box” announced by Charles Michel, the president of the European Council, included a plastic tax as part of the so-called “own resources” – referring to sums that the EU could itself collect.Chemicals Biodegradable Polyamide PET

-China’s textile market is ending due to Corona, cotton yarn may be cheaper

The Textile Ministry is going to bring a new textile policy soon to eliminate the dominance of China and Bangladesh from the country’s textile market.

In addition, under the policy, the production capacity of textile industry can be expanded at low cost.

A number of new measures will be taken to compete Indian textiles globally, including global branding of Indian clothing, use of high technology in production and the ability to deliver large orders on time.Chemicals Biodegradable Polyamide PET

Apart from this, there is also talk of changes in labor rules for the textile industry. According to T. Rajkumar, chairman of the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (Citi), the global brand retail stores in India have a large number of garments from China, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

-Adding value to polymers

How do we determine the value of polymers in a vast global marketplace, and with a balancing act between developing solutions by adding properties to polymers (to help save food waste for example), versus the overall carbon emissions and sustainability of the packaging material? Let’s start at the end of life, focusing on the recyclability of polymers.

Libby Munford asked Damien van Leuven, CEO of plastics recycling company Vanden Recycling, for his opinion on this subject. “Education in the packaging design community is the starting point.Chemicals Biodegradable Polyamide PET

-Royal DSM acquires Glycom A/S for €765m

Royal DSM NV has entered the growing market of human milk oligosaccharides (HMO) taking over the producer of recombinant 2’-fucosyl lactose, Danish Glycom A/S.

The Dutch industry giant for nutrition, health and sustainable products paid €765m for Glycom A/S, which made €74m of sales in 2019, mainly from a collaboration with Nestlé, which markets the Danish company’s recombinantly produced infant formula supplement 2’-fucosyl lactate (2-FL).Chemicals Biodegradable Polyamide PET

This human milk oligosaccharide (HMO), which can be produced significantly cheaper in E. coli that by the classical chemico-enzymatic route, is the second largest component of human breast milk and is attributed to be crucial for the development of a health-promoting gut microbiota, and is said to be essential for the development of the brain and immune system of infants.

-Vynova Launches Bio-attributed PVC Range

Vynova has launched a range of bio-attributed PVC resins that will enable customers in all application sectors to innovate their PVC products and support their sustainability goals.

The new PVC portfolio is manufactured using renewable ethylene which is produced from certified second-generation biomass feedstock which does not compete with the food chain.Chemicals Biodegradable Polyamide PET

This approach reduces the use of fossil feedstock conventionally used in the PVC production process, resulting in a CO2 emission reduction of more than 90% (based on a recent peer-reviewed Sabic internal LCA study and the PlasticsEurope eco-profile study on VCM and PVC 2015).
