Will the Chinese Disrupt the Bioplastics Industry?  .Chinese Disrupt Bioplastics Industry COFCO Biomaterial

Thyssenkrupp built the first commercial plant in China based on their patented PLA bioplastics process .Chinese Disrupt Bioplastics Industry COFCO Biomaterial

The plant is located in Changchun, China and is operated by the Jilin COFCO Biomaterial Corporation, a subsidiary of COFCO, China’s largest food and beverage group.

The new plant produces PLA that can be used for the production of eco-friendly packaging, fibers, textiles and engineering plastics. PLA is made from renewable resources such as sugar, starch or cellulose.Chinese Disrupt Bioplastics Industry COFCO Biomaterial

Sami Pelkonen, CEO of the Electrolysis & Polymers Technologies business unit of thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions:

“The bioplastics market will continue to grow in the coming years, not least due to the increasing environmental awareness of industry, governments and consumers. .Chinese Disrupt Bioplastics Industry COFCO Biomaterial

With our PLAneo® technology we want to do our bit to make the plastics sector more sustainable and resource-friendly.

With it we enable our customers to produce high-quality bioplastics with a wide range of properties – at a price that is competitive with conventional plastics.” .Chinese Disrupt Bioplastics Industry COFCO Biomaterial

PLAneo technology converts lactic acid into PLA in a particularly efficient and resource-friendly way. Another advantage is its transferability to large-scale plants with capacities of up to 100,000 tons per year. .Chinese Disrupt Bioplastics Industry COFCO Biomaterial

CLOSING REMARKS

  • Thyssenkrupp is a bit like the Rolls Royce of factory building. It’s German quality.
  • So when the Chinese ask Thyssenkrupp to build a factory, is it to reverse engineer it?
  • Which word came to your mind: probably or obviously?
  • Is someone at Thyssenkrupp not paying attention, not getting the memos or not picking up the phone?
  • Total Corbion was supposed to become the next big thing on the PLA scene but will the Chinese steal the show?
  • Japan was becoming the bioplastics leader in Asia, but will the Chinese beat the Japanese?
  • Will bioplastics become mainstream if the Chinese produce bioplastic?
