-Oil prices on the rise as supply improves slowly

THE oil picture today is one of the best, with the best maestro managing every move and fine tuning along with the well experience players. They together moved the oil price to close to $71 per barrel, without making much noise about knowing what they are doing today and tomorrow, and making sure everybody is happy with the supply that is available whenever required. Will the current oil level be the cause for inflation until the world becomes free of COVID-19? Or will it be faced with another wave of a new form of slow world economy again?  Crude Oil r-PETResin Petrochemicals

Meanwhile, the USA, China and Europe are emerging with a spending spree. This is good news for all, particularly the oil exporting countries in OPEC and its partner Plus. Having an oil price above the level of $70 will greatly help in reducing the deficits by about 30-40 % as well as reducing their borrowing from outside international banks. We hope we learn necessary lessons to continue drifting away from being dependent on oil and sincerely look for another alternative to replace oil. This is because oil will not always remain at the current level of $70 and above. The party will not last long… we have to search for another source of income for all Arabian Gulf states.

-RECYCLING OF POLYCARBONATE COMPOSITES

  • Production waste is a valuable raw material
  • Reprocessing on an industrial scale possible
  • Contribution to more sustainability and resource conservation

The Maezio® brand of continuous fiber-reinforced polycarbonate composites (CFRTPs) developed by Covestro are characterized by their extremely light weight, very high strength and exceptional flexibility of design. This means that waste generated during the production of composites also becomes a valuable raw material. However, because they consist of different materials that cannot be easily separated from one another, the recycling of composites is a challenge. Covestro is cooperating with recycling specialist carboNXT® on this. It has developed a process that allows the waste to be processed on an industrial scale. Crude Oil r-PETResin Petrochemicals

“We are very excited about this joint solution, as we cannot process the materials ourselves for technical reasons,” explains Lisa Ketelsen, Head of Thermoplastic Composites at Covestro. “By recycling according to type at our partner’s plant, the raw materials can be converted back into valuable products with similarly good properties as those characteristic of virgin materials. The recycling of materials makes it possible to use them again in other products. In this way, we save raw material resources and contribute to the focus on the circular economy.”

-Will direct-spun PSF usher the dawn?

PSF futures experienced a sharp decline in the end of May, making market players more hesitant. The cash flow of spot direct-spun PSF was also compressed to zero line, even once breaking through the zero line.

In May, direct-spun PSF market was supported only by rigid demand, leading to bleak sales. How about that in Jun? Direct-spun PSF price shows upward momentum recently. Will it sustain in Jun?  Crude Oil r-PETResin Petrochemicals

In terms of polyester feedstock, crude oil stays at high level and the inventory of polyester feedstock does not accumulate obviously. In addition, the spread of PTA-naphtha ranges in 400-500yuan/mt, and has limited room to decline. Therefore, the cost support for direct-spun PSF is moderate.

From the perspective of the supply, Huhong will cut production by 150kt/yr in Jun, and Yizheng Chemical Fiber and Jinlun will restarted their 100kt/yr and 250kt/yr units respectively. Thus, the rise of operating rate may weigh on direct-spun PSF market.

In demand terms, the raw materials in downstream spinners mostly can be used to mid- to late Jun, so intensive replenishment may be seen around mid-Jun. Besides, traditional traders and spot-futures traders hold a small amount of cargos at hand. If the basis or the price of direct-spun PSF moves to a proper level in Jun, this part of demand will be stimulated.

-Italian fabric maker Maglificio Ripa launches antiviral fabrics

Maglificio Ripa, and Italian company that specialises in knitted fabrics, has developed a new generation of antiviral fabrics, following extensive research and scrupulous laboratory testing. The fabrics are made with the new Amni Virus-Bac Off yarn that guarantees permanent anti-viral action and therefore protection from risks of contamination.  Crude Oil r-PETResin Petrochemicals

In the near future, the issue of individual protection from viruses and bacteria will also be central to the end of the pandemic in any environment, from the workplace to the gym, the company said in a media release.

The technology of the new yarn ensures that the antiviral and antibacterial agent does not migrate onto the skin or into the environment. Unlike garments treated with dyeing finishes that have limited functionality and lose their function with washing, the antiviral and antibacterial properties of the Amni Virus-Bac Off polyamide are permanent, which means the benefits for garments remain unchanged over time, confirming the sustainability of the process.

The Amni polyamide fibre is soft and easy to wash, and guarantees freshness and

comfort, contributing to the thermal well-being of the wearer, the release said.

Preparation of autoxidative water-reducible alkyd resins from waste polyethylene terephthalate

In this paper, the waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was glycolysed by trimethylolpropane with zinc acetate ascatalyst.

The effects of different content glycolysis product of waste PET on the appearance, viscosity, particle size and molecular weight of autoxidative water-reducible alkyd
resins and the corresponding film adhesion, flexibility, impact resistance, gloss, hardness and chemical resistance were studied.
Meanwhile, experimental results were compared with commercial water-reducible alkyd and water-reducible alkyd without the glycolysis product of waste PET.

The results show that the maximum concentration of PET in autoxidative waterreducible alkyd resins can reach 8.5 wt%, and the molecular weight, particle size and viscosity of water-reducible alkyd resin do not change much with the increase of PET concentration.
The introduction of PET resulted in the viscosity of waterreducible alkyd resins being greater than that of water-reducible alkyd resin without PET; this is mainly because PET contains harder terephthalic acid monomer units. However, the particle
size of water-reducible alkyd resins with waste PET is significantly lower than that of the water-reducible alkyd resin without PET; this is due to PET-free water-reducible alkyd resin containing more pentaerythritol with greater steric hindrance.
In addition, the hardness of the water-reducible alkyd resin paint film (PET content is 8.5%) reaches 1H, which is higher than the hardness (HB) of the water-reducible alkyd resin paint film without PET and the commercial alkyd resin paint film, while the physical properties and chemical resistance of the former are comparable to those of the latter two kinds of paint films. Therefore, the use of waste PET in water-borne coatings systems not only reduces the cost of coatings, but also opens up a new market for recycled PET, which may contribute a promising method for management of waste PET.
