The approved directive will now be discussed at the level of EU member states before becoming law.

The introduction of such a ban was proposed by the European Commission in May in the wake of European public concern about the issue of environmental pollution with plastics. According to the European Commission, more than 80% of the garbage falling into the seas and oceans is plastic.
