Researchers from Aarhus University have demonstrated for the first time computer vision technology that can be used to differentiate between a wide range of plastics according to their chemical composition. Applied on an industrial scale, this could enormously increase the rate of plastic recycling.

This makes it extremely difficult to tell the difference between types of plastic, making it hard to separate and recycle them. Consequently, the vast majority of plastics (more than 90 per cent) have not been recycled.

The new technology – developed by researchers from the department of biological and chemical engineering at Aarhus University, in collaboration with Vestforbænding, Dansk Affaldsminimering ApS, and Plastix – allows for differentiation between 12 different types of plastic which constitute the vast majority of household plastic types. The plastics are: PE, PP, PET, PS, PVC, PVDF, POM, PEEK, ABS, PMMA, PC and PA12.

The camera separates plastics based on a purer chemical composition than is possible today, opening up new opportunities for plastic recycling. It has already been piloted and will be implemented at Plastix and Dansk Affaldsminimering ApS early this year.

“We can even see the difference between plastics that consist of the same chemical building blocks, but which are structured slightly differently.

“We use a hyperspectral camera in the infrared area, and machine leaning to analyse and categorise the type of plastic directly on the conveyer belt. The plastic can then be separated into different types. It’s a breakthrough that will have a huge impact on all plastics separation.”

In South East Asia, LLDPE prices were assessed at the USD 1160-1210/mt CFR levels, a week on week drop of USD (-10/mt).

In Vietnam, Middle Eastern producers have offered their LLDPE film grade in the range of USD 1160-1210/mt CFR levels, for shipment in January 2022.

In India, LLDPE prices were assessed at the USD 1170-1210/mt CFR levels, a week on week decline of USD (-10/mt).

In Bangladesh, LLDPE prices were assessed at the USD 1250-1300/mt levels, a fall of USD (-20/mt) from the previous week.

As efforts continue in using PET bottle recycled content (rPET) for next-generation sustainable packaging, obstacles remain.

Recycling has become an inseparable part of the circular economy. Brand owners are committed to aggressive recycled-content goals as well as the desire for their packages to be post-consumer use recyclable. It is undeniable that recycling reduces carbon footprint and eliminates the need for landfill disposal.

With respect to PET, there are significant challenges in obtaining good, clean material to meet those goals.  Here are some of the challenges:

Consumers do not always comply with local recycling rules.

Brands are working toward making their packaging recyclable, but efforts need to increase, and additional technology inroads need to be made. These challenges can lead to compromised recycled resin quality at a time when the reclaimers are searching more material.

Another part of this equation is how bottles are collected, whether curbside or bottle deposit. The latter requires a bottle to be sold with a refundable deposit. The deposits are redeemable upon return of the bottle to participating retailers. The deposit approach is used in several states and has two benefits for recycling:

Recycling utilization is significantly higher compared to non-deposit states.

Quality of the recycled PET from deposit states is superior to curbside or municipal recycling programs as there are lower levels of contamination as the PET bottles are not mixed with other packaging materials.

Because it is easy to do, this approach has been shown to increase the likelihood of consumer participation in recycling programs. The downside is the contamination that comes with combining all the packaging materials together. Here are some of the challenges with that approach:

Non-PET packaging materials such as corrugate, HDPE, glass, PP and PVC;

Labels, inks and residual glue and adhesives;

Metals: both ferrous (magnetic) and non-ferrous (aluminum);

Product residues, dirt, and assorted debris;

Coatings (both chemical & plasma deposited);

Non-adhering barrier layers such as ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and nylon;

Dirt, syrup, wood particles from pallets.

-Schneider Electric introduces home energy solutions made from recycled ocean plastics

The company also revamped its product packaging to eliminate all single-use and nonrecyclable materials from the packaging process.

Schneider Electric, a Rueil-Malmaison, France-based company focused on the digital transformation of energy management and automation, has unveiled the first home energy solutions made from ocean plastics and has updated its product packaging to enhance its commitments to sustainability.

The products debuted at CES 2022, which is taking place through Jan. 7 in Las Vegas.

Schneider’s Merten range of sockets and switches now features models made from polyamide fishing nets recovered from the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. The company partnered with DSM Engineering Materials, Troy, Michigan, in transforming discarded fishing nets into high-grade technical plastic that can be used in electrical devices.

According to a news release, DSM collaborates with local communities in India to recover and collect the fishing nets, which are then cut up, cleaned, extruded and inspected before being sent to DSM for processing into Akulon Repurposed compound.

“Tackling the global challenge of ocean plastics will require our entire industry to step up and find innovative solutions to drive a circular transformation,” says Helen Mets, executive vice president of materials at DSM. “Through our collaboration with Schneider Electric, we aspire to take small steps toward maintaining healthier marine life, litter-free beaches and cleaner oceans and the initiative also supporting local livelihoods and create jobs.”  European waste Plastic recycling Polyethylene LLDPE PP market

DSM was recognized last year for its partnership with Ford Motor Co. in the use of Akulon Repurposed plastic in the Ford Bronco Sport, making Ford the first automaker to use 100 percent recycled ocean plastic to produce car parts.

The World Wildlife Federation estimates abandoned fishing nets account for as much as 46 percent of the waste in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which covers an area twice the size of Texas and three times the size of France. At present, the PP plants of Ningbo Fortune and Oriental Energy II are operating normally, but a pass permit is required for delivery. Then, after talking about the temporary situation, let’s talk about the maintenance arrangements in the plan.

Judging from the current situation, there are not many plants plan to shut for maintenance, but temporary shutdown is not ruled out.
