Building the Future: The Wesseling Recycling Plant
In Wesseling, Germany, LyondellBasell is constructing a state-of-the-art chemical recycling facility with an annual processing capacity of 50,000 metric tons (approximately 110 million pounds).
This plant will leverage MoReTec technology to convert post-consumer plastic waste into valuable raw materials. Construction began in September 2024, with operations expected to start in 2026.

Navigating Market Transitions with Strategic Restructuring
Market pressures have encouraged LyondellBasell to streamline its asset base and strengthen its long-term growth strategy.
In June, the company entered negotiations to sell four European production sites — located in Berre (France), Münchsmünster (Germany), Carrington (England), and Tarragona (Spain) — to German investment firm AEQUITA.
These facilities collectively represent 2.1 billion pounds of polypropylene and 700 million pounds each of high- and low-density polyethylene capacity.
As part of the proposed agreement, LyondellBasell would contribute approximately $300 million to a new AEQUITA-formed company, while AEQUITA would provide $11.5 million in cash and assume around $170 million in liabilities. The transaction includes a potential earnout of up to $114 million for LyondellBasell. MoReTec Technology
CEO Peter Vanacker described the deal as “a significant step in LYB’s transformation to grow and upgrade our core,” noting that Europe remains an essential market for the company.
Strengthening the U.S. Footprint
In parallel, LyondellBasell announced the sale of four U.S. resin powder plants — in Allentown (PA), East Chicago (IN), China (TX), and Grand Junction (TN) — to Niche Polymer LLC, a Columbia, Maryland–based firm.
Niche Polymer plans to consolidate these assets into a new entity named Specialty Powders LLC, streamlining production and enhancing efficiency.

Strategic Partnerships in Bio-Based Packaging
LyondellBasell’s sustainability leadership extends far beyond recycling. In September 2025, the company announced a groundbreaking partnership with three Japanese firms — Futamura Chemical Co., Iwatani Corp., and Shiseido Co. — to create bio-based film packaging.
The collaboration supports Shiseido’s Clé de Peau Beauté luxury brand, using Circulen Renew, LyondellBasell’s line of bio-based polypropylene.
Futamura has also adopted Circulen Renew in its SusFi sustainable film range. These materials act as drop-in solutions, allowing manufacturers to replace fossil-based feedstocks without changing their existing production lines.
By advancing bio-based polymers alongside chemical recycling, LyondellBasell is reinforcing a dual-track approach to sustainability: reducing waste while lowering carbon intensity across the plastics value chain.
Achieving Operation Clean Sweep Blue Certification
LyondellBasell’s dedication to responsible production is reflected in its recent achievement of Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) Blue verification for three of its Texas plants — in La Porte, Matagorda, and Victoria.
OCS, an initiative launched in 1991 by the Plastics Industry Association and managed in partnership with the American Chemistry Council, is the industry’s highest standard for preventing resin loss into the environment.
These facilities produce HDPE, LDPE, and LLDPE, all essential resins for global packaging and infrastructure markets.
The OCS Blue certification confirms that LyondellBasell’s facilities have implemented best practices to prevent pellet loss, enhance employee training, and ensure compliance with environmental standards.
Scaling Circular Solutions Globally
LyondellBasell’s global sustainability roadmap is guided by the principle that innovation drives circularity.
