-Aloxe invests €50 million to become an independent European leader in recycled PET

Aloxe announces €50 million investments in PET recycling in the three countries where it is already established, France, Poland, and Italy. With 120,000 tons of capacity in Europe, Aloxe claims to become the independent European leader in recycled PET.

The investment includes the opening of a new plant in France in April 2023 with a capacity of 35,000 tons, with an additional capacity of 20,000 tons already planned. In addition the company invests in the development of its capacity in Poland with an additional 40,000 tons of extrusion capacity starting spring 2024 as well as a ramp-up of its Italian plant.

After the acquisition of Loreco Plast Recyclage (France) in 2021 and Elcen (Poland) in August 2022, Aloxe has just completed a third acquisition in Italy.

In a market driven by European regulation, the needs of the beverage industry are tremendous, states Aloxe. A sizeable challenge that Aloxe now intends to meet, with production sites in France, Poland and Italy, head-on to respond to this growing demand.

“We aim to partner with leading FMCG’s and plastic packaging manufacturing companies to supply them with high-quality recycled PET; we will continue to work to support them achieve their ambitious sustainable packaging goals” said Arnaud Piroëlle, Aloxe’s Executive Director.

-Plastics Europe Trade Press Conference – Focus on Circular Economy

Every year Plastics Europe Germany, the association of plastics producers, holds its trade press day, usually right around the beginning of spring. And so it was again this year. Around two dozen participants across the trade press found their way digitally to an exciting event on 15 March 2022, where (almost) everything revolved around the climate-neutral circular economy.

Almost everything, because Ingemar Bühler (photo top left), CEO of Plastics Europe Germany and host of the event, also began by saying a few words about Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, which of course could not go unmentioned – not only for reasons of the impact on supply chains and co – could not remain unmentioned. A turning point in time, which also illustrates how important it is that our industry follows the path of decoupling from fossil raw materials more consistently and courageously, and that resources are circulated more efficiently overall. Dr Henning Wilts (photo top centre), head of the circular economy department at the Wuppertal Institute, kicked off the day with his presentation “Climate-neutral industry? Circular economy as a key strategy”. In addition to the enormous opportunities, he also emphasised how difficult the path to this goal still is – despite excellent theoretical debate, criteria catalogues and innovative research projects. At the moment, Dr Wilts explained, there is simply too little being implemented. In the context of a sharp increase in total resource consumption worldwide, which is causing high CO2 emissions and massive species extinction, it is high time to get down to implementation.

This is where Sabine Nadherny-Borutin (photo top right), Secretary General of PlasticsEurope Austria, picked up. In particular, she presented the Austrian initiative Carbon Cycle Circle, which consists of companies in the sector, research institutions and plastics think tanks. Together, these players contribute as a network to the discussions on the circular economy, climate neutrality and resource conservation and, due to their expertise, can also develop concrete proposals and concepts vis-à-vis government and co. to strengthen the circular economy already today – and, as Dr Wilts urged, to get straight down to implementation

The third speaker was Dr Alexander Kronimus (photo bottom left), Head of the Climate Protection and Circular Economy Division at the Plastics Producers Association, who addressed the representatives of the trade press. In his presentation, Dr Kronimus introduced the circular technologies that are to make the climate-neutral circular economy around plastics a reality. Away from fossil fuels and towards a circular economy: these two goals could be achieved simultaneously, for example by producing plastics with CO2, which is thus bound in plastics and no longer released into the atmosphere. Plastics made from biomass, especially from bio-residues such as organic waste, could also contribute equally to these two goals. According to Dr Kronimus, the circular technology of recycling is of course also essential. In concrete terms, this would involve the further development of mechanical recycling as well as large-scale plants for chemical recycling.

Prof. Dr Dieter Stapf (photo bottom right) from KIT Karlsruhe showed that this chemical recycling is often underestimated and that this recycling method is wrongly assumed to consume much more energy than is actually the case. In order to achieve the recycling targets, there is an additional need for 11 million tonnes of plastic waste in the EU by 2030. PET-recycled – Circular-Economy

These quantities cannot be achieved with mixed plastic waste and mechanical recycling alone. Chemical recycling, on the other hand, enables much more comprehensive recycling with relatively little energy input – a small portion of plastic waste (mid-single digits) is already sufficient for energy generation. It is more difficult to achieve the high temperature level and for this, large-scale plants with a permanently high material turnover are now finally needed.

-BASF and StePac create fresh produce plastic wrap to lengthen shelf life for food waste reduction

BASF and StePac are partnering to develop environmentally sustainable packaging to extend the shelf life of fresh produce. BASF is supplying StePac with its Ultramid Ccycled, a chemically recycled polyamide six, while StePac brings its MAP technology with built-in humidity control that delays food’s aging process

The EU reports that approximately a third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted. This results from many different facets of the industry, but food packaging is one of them.

Food packaging that increases food longevity within the package greatly benefits reducing waste. If consumers feel more certain about their produce lasting longer within the package, they are less likely to dispose of it, leading to lesser food waste.

“Plastic packaging should only be used when it has a functional role, should be kept as lean as possible and should ideally support a circular economy by either being mechanically or chemically recycled,” Gary Ward, Business Development Manager of StePac, tells PackagingInsights.

Polyamide six plastic

The plastic wrap has been designed for fresh produce. StePac already uses chemically recycled plastics for packaging fresh perishables, but BASF’s polyamide provides StePac with plastic that has greater flexibility to advance contact-sensitive packaging formats to a higher environmental standard. A mockup design of BASF and StePac’s new Xgo Circular over Jardin Exotics’ passion fruits. Polyamide six is an engineered plastic material known for its strength and anti-wear properties. The polyamide is chemically resistant to oils, gasoline, alcohol, weak acids and concentrated alkalis. Some of its primary functions include resistance and strength at high and low temperatures, flow for forming all kinds of parts by injection molding and abrasion resistance.

StePac received a REDcert certification to incorporate chemically recycled polyamide six into its flexible, modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) products.

A challenge the teams faced when creating the plastic wrapping was “testing and approving that [they] could incorporate the recycled resin and retain the same packaging performance,” says Ward. “The accreditation process was also very demanding.”

From the design process, StePac created two brands Xgo and Xtend, based on MAP technology. The plastic products have built-in humidity control, which effectively slows respiration inside the packaging, delays the aging processes, inhibits microbial decay and preserves the quality and nutritional value of the produce during prolonged storage and long-haul shipments.

“As far as we are aware, this is the first flexible packaging product that contains chemically recycled content to be used in the fresh produce sector. We are very proud of this,” continues Ward.

Environmental benefits

Ward states that “these upgraded packaging formats will continue to maintain their role of significantly reducing food waste, a most important task considering that global food waste is responsible for about 8% of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions.”

According to the EU, about 88 million metric tons of food are wasted annually across Europe, costing €143 billion (US$151.7 billion). This results in around a third of all food wasted globally, states the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

Creating packaging for food that lengthens the time before spoiling would also lead to less over-consumption, as consumers currently buy more food due to it spoiling quickly.

“This alliance will help strike a balance between creating plastic packaging that is as eco-friendly as possible to keep fresh produce longer through more prudent use of lean plastic films,” Ward adds.

BASF has been working on a chemical recycling project in order to create designs such as the new produce wrap called ChemCycling. The company is working with partners to further develop the pyrolysis technology, which turns plastic waste into a secondary raw material called pyrolysis oil.

“In a thermochemical process, our partners obtain recycled feedstock from these end-of-life plastics, which is then fed into the BASF Verbund. Using a mass balance approach, the raw material can be attributed to specific products, such as Ultramid Ccycled,” explains Dr. Dominik Winter, vice president of BASF’s European polyamides business.

The oil is fed into BASF’s production at the beginning of the value chain, thereby saving fossil resources and yielding food-grade recycled plastic. Chemical recycling primarily involves plastic waste that would have been used for energy recovery or landfilled, states the company.

BASF’s chemical recycling process “helps to replace fossil raw materials and is an important step toward circularity. As chemically recycled plastics have the same quality and safety as virgin material, the scope of plastics that can be recycled for fresh produce packaging is widened,” concludes Winter.

Passion fruit partnership

Colombian passion fruit exporters Jardin Exotics will be the first to use the new packaging brand Xgo Circular. The product will be supplied as a film for horizontal form fill-and-seal.

The packaging’s MAP properties will slow the ripening process and preserve the quality of the fruit during shipment from Colombia to Europe. PET-recycled – Circular-Economy

For passion fruit, the combination of the produce specific modified atmosphere properties of the film and its high-water vapor transmission rate makes this film unique in its performance. The company will also be packing the fruits at-source in the final retail packaging format, eliminating the need for repacking after arrival.

Ocean Legacy has announced that they have produced the first commercially available plastic pellet in North America, called Legacy Plastic.

Legacy Plastic is made from high-grade 100 per cent post-consumer processed recycled plastic recovered during ocean, shoreline, and marine equipment cleanups.

“We softly launched Legacy Plastic in 2021, and we are thrilled with the amount of interest that it has received from companies that want to incorporate recycled content into their products. This is a huge milestone for Ocean Legacy Foundation as creating opportunities that bolster the use of materials collected during cleanup into new products will continue to advance the success of the plastic circular economy,” said Chloé Dubois, co-founder, Ocean Legacy Foundation. “Legacy Plastic contributes to the circular plastic economy and reduces land and ocean pollution. Collection of post-consumer PET bottles in the US exceeds 1.9 billion lb for the first time as North America hits record levels, too, NAPCOR reports.

A report from the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) indicates that 2021 saw the largest amount of post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) ever collected in the US, including bottles and thermoforms.

A report from the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) indicates that 2021 saw the largest amount of post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) ever collected in the US, including bottles and thermoforms.

US bottle collection that year exceeded 1.9 billion lb for the first time. In addition, collection of post-consumer PET via deposit redemption systems grew 46%, year over year.

Thermoform collection in the US and Canada also reached a record high of 142 million lb in 2021.

NAPCOR’s 2021 PET Recycling Report further indicates that the US PET recycling rate rose from 27.1% to 28.6% between 2020 and 2021. The North American rate increased from 34.2% to 36.8% during the same period.

“These rates mark two major milestones in the growth of PET awareness, appreciation, use, and reuse,” says Laura Stewart, NAPCOR’s executive director, in a prepared statement. “The 2021 increase is a powerful indicator that pandemic-driven disruptions to recycling services are getting back on track.”

Stewart added, “It is also important to point out that the North American rate is over the 30% recycling threshold suggested by the Ellen McArthur Foundation.

This is viewed by many industry pundits as the post-consumer benchmark for proving that recycling works in practice and scale across multiple regions representing at least 400 million inhabitants.” PET-recycled – Circular-Economy

The first solid progress toward circularity for thermoformed PET trays occurred in 2021, with converters using 11 million lb of PET thermoforms to produce new thermoforms.

Fully 73% of the record volume of post-consumer PET thermoforms collected in 2021 in the United States and Canada was processed by PET reclaimers, companies that buy post-consumer PET and sell clean, recycled PET flake or pellet.

Recycled PET (rPET) textile fiber producers experienced higher prices and fiercer competition for clear rPET in 2021 — but still managed to produce more than 1 billion lb of rPET fiber, partly by sourcing more colored rPET flake and post-industrial rPET flake.

In both 2020 and 2021, the consumption of rPET for bottles (food/ beverage and other) surpassed demand in the RPET fiber market in the United States and Canada. Food/beverage, as a discreet category, was the biggest rPET user in 2021.

NAPCOR continues its work to educate the public about PET and recycling. Stewart explains, “The more we increase awareness of PET and motivate proper, consistent recycling levels, the closer we will get to put the US on par with global recycling rates and, most importantly, the greater the impact we will have on the planet.”
