-Europe capro prices face upward pressure from feedstocks, tighter availability

The European caprolactam (capro) markets continue to face upward pressure in November from the double-digit increase in the price of feedstock benzene, good demand and tighter supply due to an outage at a capro facility in Belgium.

Capro contract price negotiations for November are ongoing in the European market, with some settlements finalised with an upward movement already and others expected to close later this week. Petrochemical Automotive Recycling CrudeOil

Following severe demand destruction during the first coronavirus lockdowns and a three-digit fall in the capro contract price in April, capro values have been gradually picking-up, albeit at a slower pace than the upstream benzene, as supply continued to outstrip demand. The market has become more balanced in September and October.

-Turkey reinstates Saudi Arabia in customs scheme

Turkey today reinstated Saudi Arabia in a key customs scheme designed to aid Turkish exporters who import raw materials, polymer market participants said.

The move will ease concerns that the exclusion, which was initiated in October, would increase the cost and reduce the flow of polymer imports into Turkey from Saudi Arabia, a key supplier. Petrochemical Automotive Recycling CrudeOil

The so-called Inward Processing Regime allows customs-exempt imports and/or domestic purchases for export purposes, avoiding 6.5pc import duties for polymers.

-Chemical recycling boost could see global plastic packaging recycling rate hit 50%

Approximately 220 million tonnes (MT) of plastic waste is generated globally each year. Of this, around 90MT is mismanaged and leaking into the natural environment, 70MT is landfilled, 30MT is incinerated and another 30MT is recycled.

If the plastics value chain is to become more sustainable, the industry must focus on reducing the amount of mismanaged waste and recapturing as much of its value as possible. To do this, more investment must be allocated to chemical recycling technologies, according to Wood Mackenzie.Petrochemical Automotive Recycling CrudeOil

“Mechanical recycling has, to date, been the best way of capturing the value of plastic waste by turning it into other useful applications. However, the approach has its limitations.
