-Upcycling ‘fast fashion‘ to reduce waste and pollution
Recycling cotton-polyester clothes is closer to reality with a new method that can (1) dissolve the blended materials, (2) separate the cellulose and (3) spin new lyocell-like fibers. Credit: Simone Haslinger/Herbert Sixta, Ph.D.
Pollution created by making and dyeing clothes has pitted the fashion industry and environmentalists against each other. Now, the advent of “fast fashion”—trendy clothing affordable enough to be disposable—has strained that relationship even more. But what if we could recycle clothes like we recycle paper, or even upcycle them? Scientists report today new progress toward that goal.

-The Worrying Truth About Russia’s Oil Industry
The widespread adaptation of the combustion engine at the start of the 20th century propelled oil into becoming the world’s most important commodity.
Resource-rich countries such as Russia were the beneficiaries of the new global energy order.
Its predecessors, the Soviet Union and Imperial Russia, were already among the first and most important producers of oil in the late 19th and early 20th century. The country’s oil sector, however, is facing challenges to maintain its current level of production. Petrochemical Carbon Fibers Automotive
Although Russia ranks 8th in terms of proven oil reserves, it is the second-largest producer with 11.2 million barrels per day (mb/d).

-Europe first: the EU’s digital industrialisation challenge
Ursula von der Leyen has put tackling the EU’s loss of competitiveness against US tech companies and increasingly sophisticated Chinese manufacturing at the top of her agenda.
The new president of the European Commission, who took office this month, has promised to roll out a reinvigorated industrial strategy by March.
The EU lags behind the US and Asia in many cutting-edge fields.
This means it could lose even more share of global manufacturing as new technologies — such as the internet of things, the use of big data, artificial intelligence and 5G — go mainstream. Petrochemical Carbon Fibers Automotive
-Moody’s cuts India’s economic growth forecast to 5.6%16
India’s economic growth forecast for 2019 was reduced to 5.6 per cent last week by Moody’s Investors Service, which said government measures do not address the widespread weakness in consumption demand. India’s real gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate was 7.4 per cent in 2018. India’s economic slowdown is lasting longer than previously expected, it said.
In its Global Macro Outlook 2020-21, Moody’s said economic activity in India will pick up in 2020 and 2021 to 6.6 per cent and 6.7 per cent, respectively, but the pace to remain lower than in the recent past. Petrochemical Carbon Fibers Automotive
-Circular economy going around in circles, experts say
The circular economy has been hailed as the best way to solve the ever-piling plastic waste problem in Indonesia, but observers argue that the country lacks the integration to make it work.
Indonesia produces about 64 million tons of waste annually, according to February data from the Environment and Forestry Ministry.
Of the total figure, about 15 percent is plastic waste, much of which is food and beverage packaging and plastic bags. Petrochemical Carbon Fibers Automotive
