Austrian plastic packaging and recycling specialist Alpla Group has unveiled what it says is the world’s first carbon-neutral recycled PET. It switched its PET recycling plants in Wöllersdorf, Austria, and Radomsko, Poland, to a mix of electricity from renewable sources in order to produce carbon-neutral rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate).

“This step has already had a big impact on the carbon footprint of our food-grade regranulate – according to the calculations, emissions are cut by up to 90% compared with virgin material,” explains Georg Lässer, Head of Recycling at Alpla.

The company is now offering its customers carbon-neutral rPET based on the purchase of certificates. The remaining, unavoidable emissions relating, for example, to delivery of the input material to the plants, are then offset with carbon certificates.

New Delhi — Prices of film-grade high density polyethylene in South Asia hit their highest level in 15 months at $995/mt CFR on Oct. 21, as buyers scouted for cargoes in an increasingly tight spot market, S&P Global Platts data showed.

The study will look into waste segregation facilities and plastic pyrolysis plants to recycle Singapore’s plastic waste. Pyrolysis is a chemical process to convert plastic waste into higher-value products such as pyrolysis oil, which can be upgraded as feedstock to manufacture plastics and chemicals.

“Chemical recycling will enable the recycling of contaminated plastics that are recovered from our general waste. This feasibility study is part of NEA’s efforts to develop our local plastic recycling capabilities, improve our plastic recycling rates and enhance the resilience of our overall waste management infrastructure.

-Europe styrene prices climb on higher Asia demand after China holidays

Europe styrene spot prices have risen since the start of the month, on higher prices in Asia where demand has jumped after China prices surged after the National Day Golden Week holiday.

Europe spot prices rose by around 14% in the past few weeks, with current month spot prices averaging at around $700/tonne or more – a level that was temporarily reached in mid-July, before falling again. Prior to that, prices were well below that level after the slump in March.

The hike in Europe prices is almost entirely because of the increase in values in Asia after the 1-8 October holiday in China. Prices there have spiked on eased oversupply pressure and a bullish futures market.

Pactiv Evergreen has announced a new goal that by 2030, 100% of its products will be made with recycled, recyclable or renewable materials, said the company.

The report further outlines a comprehensive sustainability strategy, which includes a new vision, mission and pillars that ground the company’s current and future initiatives.

Based on 2019 net revenues, Pactiv has reached nearly two-thirds of the goal, “and in the next decade, we will work to achieve that 100% goal”, McGrath added. In the report, the company also noted it decreased its greenhouse gas emissions by 10% in the last five years, and that about half of its annual energy consumption comes from renewable sources, including biomass, hydropower, wind and solar.

Materials manufacturer Röchling Automotive says it has patented a polylactide (PLA)-based biopolymer that consists of at least 90% renewable raw materials, called BioBoom. The company says the material offers an ecological and economical alternative to most conventional materials such as polyester (PC, PET, PBT) but also polystyrene (ABS), polyolefins (such as PP) and polyamides (PA6). The aerospace industry is increasing its use of composite materials because of the advantages they offer in terms of weight reduction and strength. One of the drawbacks of these composite materials is the complexity of recycling them.

The SPARTA project

In response to this challenge, AIMPLAS is coordinating the SPARTA project, with the participation of TEKNIKER. Both centres will develop a new recycling method for key waste processing and reprocessing procedures. Specifically, TEKNIKER will contribute its knowledge and experience in mechanical cutting to the development and optimization of an innovative mechanical scrapping process, through simulation and experimentation, while AIMPLAS focuses on improving material reprocessing through automatic deposition and compression moulding.

It reported that the Council of Ministers met on Sunday 18 October to discuss the budget for the financial year 2021, and issued its plans via a release on Sunday evening.

The Italian press suggests that liberal political party Italia Viva requested that the plastics tax be postponed until July, otherwise it would not give its backing to a draft budgetary document. The postponement is most likely due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic which has impacted economies across Europe.

Snam, one of the world’s leading energy infrastructure companies, and Compagnia Valdostana delle Acque (CVA), a vertically integrated Italian operator with pure green production of hydroelectric, photovoltaic and wind power, have signed a collaboration agreement to create joint initiatives in green hydrogen and projects aimed at promoting the energy transition in Valle d’Aosta.
