-Coperion-APK makes high-quality plastic compounds out of packaging waste

APK AG is relying on the high-performance ZSK extruder technology and technical process expertise from Coperion for its Newcycling process, wherein multi-polymer and multi-layer plastic packaging can be separated and processed into homogeneous regrind using ZSK twin screw extruders. Petrochemical Hydrogen Bioplastic

The polymer in this process remains unchanged. Newcycling is therefore efficient from both a cost and environmental perspective, and the quality of the recyclates is close to that of virgin product.

The amount of plastic waste produced daily is one of the greatest problems of modern times. With its Newcycling process, APK is laying an important cornerstone for achieving the goal of greater sustainability and higher recycling rates.

-Asia MEG prices weaken on falling polyester sales; demand may slow down

Asia import monoethylene glycol (MEG) prices weakened this week amid falling polyester sales, and the market will be likely under pressure as downstream demand may slow gradually amid a second wave of coronavirus infections in overseas markets.

Spot discussions were heard at $470-475/tonne CFR China Main Ports (CMP) on 29 October and most buyers just watched the market due to price declines starting from late last week. Petrochemical Hydrogen Bioplastic

Spot MEG prices rebounded from 9 October amid the post-holiday restocking, according to ICIS.

The polyester sales-to-output ratio fell to 30-50% this week from 75-100% seen last week as downstream converters took a break amid higher inventories after replenishing actively in earlier weeks.

“Downstream textile converters are sitting at higher stocks, so they need some time to absorb,” a major downstream polyester producer said.

Buying interest for import MEG dwindled as most polyester producers expected the demand to slow down from November onwards as the year-end period is usually the lull season for textile industry, especially this year.

-European Commission accused of ‘mixed messaging’ over sustainability of continent’s biofuels

A new report from the European Commission underlined the importance and sustainability of renewable ethanol, but also revealed its contradictory stance wanting to minimise the role of biofuels in achieving the EU Green Deal. Petrochemical Hydrogen Bioplastic

This was the view of ePURE after the Commission’s Renewable Energy Progress Report was published on 14 October that included an assessment of progress on decarbonisation and examined the sustainability aspects of biofuels consumed in the EU.

While significant progress has been made, the report showed that more was needed, as overall transport emissions had continuously increased over the last five years.

Even though the average GHG intensity of fuels supplied in the EU had decreased since 2010, the Commission said further action was needed to ensure the 6% reduction target set in the Fuel Quality Directive was met by 2020 – which makes the case for promoting the uptake of E10 ethanol blend in Member States to help reduce the carbon intensity of fuels.

-Europe chems cautious on automotive as recovery may be short-lived

European chemical markets remain cautious over the recent recovery from the key automotive sector, a result mainly of industry restocking, while the pandemic’s second wave hits the region hard.

The automotive sector has been the main area of concern from the end-user markets throughout the pandemic, and was the last to show any signs of life at the end of the first wave. Petrochemical Hydrogen Bioplastic

There has been higher demand from automotive across petrochemicals since September, particularly from polymers that are used for parts production like polycarbonate (PC), polymethyl methacrylate, (PMMA), polypropylene (PP), nylon, and other engineering plastics.

Stronger automotive demand is providing upward pressure in a number of monthly and quarterly contracts talks that are currently taking place.

-Eurozone Q3 GDP up nearly 13%, still far from pre-pandemic levels

The eurozone’s GDP rose strongly in the third quarter, up 12.7% quarter on quarter, but the 19-country currency union’s output remains well below year on year, the EU’s statistical agency said on Friday. Petrochemical Hydrogen Bioplastic

The increase was larger than the fall in the second quarter, but GDP had already decreased in the first quarter as the pandemic hit Europe in March and lockdowns started to be implemented.

The pandemic’s second wave, hitting Europe hard again, has prompted new restrictions to mobility to slow the spread of coronavirus. These measures could cause a fall in GDP in the fourth quarter, analysts said this week.

-Collaboration produces renewably sourced phenol for interior plastics

As part of a strategic collaboration, automotive polymer supplier Covestro has received its first delivery of 1,000 tons of renewable phenol from manufacturer Borealis, which has been produced with renewable hydrocarbons from petroleum company Neste.

Neste produces the ISCC Plus-certified hydrocarbons (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) entirely from renewable raw materials, such as waste and residual oils and fats. Petrochemical Hydrogen Bioplastic

The hydrocarbons are then converted into ISCC Plus mass balance certified phenol by Borealis and finally used by Covestro to produce the high-performance plastic polycarbonate – as a replacement for part of the phenol previously manufactured from fossil resources.

Polycarbonate is then used in automotive lighting, glazing, LED lights, electronic devices and other applications.

-Magna to launch augmented mirror system

The augmentation of automotive mirror systems with camera-based technology is increasingly commonplace. For example, Tier 1 supplier Magna is set to introduce its Clearview system to market in 2022, which harnesses a combination of camera and mirror technology to provide drivers with an enhanced field of view.

The system’s interior mirror features a frameless design with the ability to electronically switch between a traditional rearview mirror and a video display that has a customizable field of view and can display up to three camera views at the same time.

Magna notes that this is particularly helpful when passengers, cargo and/or a trailer restrict the driver’s view when using the traditional rearview mirror. The system is also available with a capacitive-touch interface that enables an auto maker or vehicle logo to be included.Petrochemical Hydrogen Bioplastic

-Catalysts for isotactic polar polypropylenes — ScienceDaily

Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most widely used plastics in the world. By controlling the spatial orientation of the propylene building blocks and additional polar components, it should be possible to create a new generation of attractive, engineered, specialty plastics, with improved wettability or enhanced degradability, based on PP. In the journal Angewandte Chemie, Japanese scientists have introduced the basis for a new class of palladium catalysts for such polymerizations. Petrochemical Hydrogen Bioplastic

The properties of PP depend largely on the spatial orientation of the individual monomers as they are added to the growing chain (tacticity). In atactic PP (aPP) the orientation is random. In syndiotactic PP (sPP) the CH(3)-side groups on the monomer alternately point toward the two sides of the polymer backbone. The most sought-after version — isotactic PP (iPP) in which all of the side groups point the same way — has particularly advantageous mechanical properties. Incorporation of additional functional, polar monomers into iPP is an important step toward the development of novel plastics.

-Coca-Cola reveals first paper bottle prototype

In partnership with Paboco and the three other companies in the Paboco Pioneer Community, Coca-Cola has revealed a first-generation prototype of its paper bottle.

The company has not yet realised its ultimate goal of creating a 100% paper-based bottle, as the structure of the prototype consists of a paper shell with a plastic closure and a plastic liner inside.Petrochemical Hydrogen Bioplastic

While the plastic used is 100% recycled and can be recycled again after use, the company aims to eventually create a paper bottle that can be recycled like any paper. Coca-Cola says that the next step is to find a solution to create a bottle without the plastic liner.
