-Toyobo and Indorama forms JV to produce automobile airbag yarns in Thailand

Toyobo Co., Ltd. has agreed to set up a joint venture firm to produce yarns for automobile airbags with Bangkok-based Indorama Polyester Industries PCL (IPI), which is under the umbrella of the world’s largest polyethylene terephthalate (PET) producer, Indorama Ventures PCL (IVL), as per Toyobo’s press release.

The joint company plans to build a new plant on the IPI factory site in Rayong Province, Thailand, and start operations in 1st Quarter of 2022.

The airbag market is expected to continue growing at three-four percent annually thanks to an increase in the number of airbags installed per vehicle and growth in the proportion of vehicles equipped with airbags in emerging economies. In 2014, Toyobo and IVL jointly acquired PHP Fibers GmbH (PHP), a German airbag yarn maker that held the second-largest share in the world at that time. Since then the relationship has grown stronger with many joint activities carried out between Toyobo and PHP.

-Weakening German business outlook in October marks ‘end of rebound’ – analyst

A dip in business expectations in Germany during October after five consecutive months of improvement marks the end of Europe’s economic rebound and increases the risk that the region will fall back into recession, according to analysts on Monday.

The Ifo business climate index, derived from a survey of German businesses of future expectations, fell to 92.7 points in October from 93.2 in September despite widespread perception that conditions had improved month on month, indicating growing unease about rising coronavirus infection numbers.

“In view of rising infection numbers, German business is becoming increasingly worried,” said Ifo president Clemens Fuest.

-US PX demand poised to increase with MEG restarts

US paraxylene (PX) demand is poised to increase, as plants for monoethylene glycol (MEG) – which along with PX derivative terephthalic acid (PTA) is used in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) production – return from hurricane-related outages and planned maintenance.

Demand for US PX has been muted, due to lower PET production rates as a result of MEG shortages. Petrochemical Hydrogen Film Automotive

MEG supply is expected to rebalance in November, as idled plants resume production.

MEG RETURNING ONLINE

Sasol and Lotte have restarted their plants in Lake Charles, Louisiana, after being shut down for two hurricanes since late August.

Two more US MEG plants are scheduled to return from maintenance by the end of October.

Up to two-thirds of US MEG production was idled in September and most of October, following hurricanes Laura and Delta, and planned maintenance at other MEG plants.

Determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials under controlled composting conditions – Method by analysis of evolved carbon dioxide.

ISO 14855 / ASTM D5338  – BIOPLASTIC DEGRADATION

With the increasing use of plastics, their recovery and disposal have become a major issue. As a priority, recovery should be promoted. Complete recovery of plastics, however, is difficult. For example, plastic litter, which comes mainly from consumers, is difficult to recover completely. Biodegradable plastics are now emerging as one of the options available to solve such environmental problems.

Plastic materials, such as products or packaging, which are sent to composting facilities should be potentially biodegradable. Therefore, it is very important to determine the potential biodegradability of such materials and to obtain an indication of their biodegradability in natural environments.Petrochemical Hydrogen Film Automotive

ISO 14855-1:2005 specifies a method for the determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastics, based on organic compounds, under controlled composting conditions by measurement of the amount of carbon dioxide evolved and the degree of disintegration of the plastic at the end of the test. This method is designed to simulate typical aerobic composting conditions for the organic fraction of solid mixed municipal waste.

-New US Fuel Cell Alliance Blows Dark Green Hydrogen Cloud Over Natural Gas

A new manufacturing alliance has popped up in the US and it’s on a mission to replace diesel engines with fuel cells in trucks — and buses, aircraft, watercraft, off-road equipment, and locomotives, too. Since the main source of hydrogen is natural gas, that should send shivers of delight up the spines of fossil fuel fans, right? Maybe not! The stage is already set for renewable green hydrogen to take over. The main obstacle is cost, and an expanding fuel cell market would help build economies of scale and supply chain efficiencies into the green hydrogen field.Petrochemical Hydrogen Film Automotive

The Western State Hydrogen Alliance

The market for fuel cell vehicles in the US is mainly limited to California, where auto manufacturers are scrambling to meet emissions standards, so it’s only natural that the newly launched Western State Hydrogen Alliance has its sights set on the Golden State.

-Huge $50bn Pilbara green hydrogen hub granted major project status

A plan to build a massive renewable energy hydrogen project of up to 26GW of wind and solar capacity in Western Australia’s Pilbara region is set to enjoy a fast-tracked approvals process, after securing ‘major project status’ from the federal government.

The Asian Renewable Energy Hub proposes to invest more than $50 billion in establishing a massive renewable energy export hub in the Pilbara region, which would include the export of wind and solar energy to Asia, through the production of renewable hydrogen fuels and ammonia.Petrochemical Hydrogen Film Automotive

The federal government has granted the massive renewable energy project ‘major project status’, which recognises the national significance of the project and will ensure the project developers are provided additional support to see the project fast-tracked through the approvals process.

-Organisations call for UK ban on controversial degradable plastics

More than 40 major organisations have called on the government to stop plastic materials which require additives to degrade to be sold on the UK market.

The call follows news that the British Standards Institution (BSI) enacted a new specification (PAS9017) this month supporting the sale of such plastics.

An open letter published in The Daily Telegraph calls on the Government to follow the lead of the EU, which is banning similar oxo-degradable plastics from next year.

The letter highlights how such degradable materials do not solve the global problem of plastic pollution, stating it instead encourages members of the public to litter under the misconception that the material is biodegradable. It has been signed by representatives from a host of major supermarkets, including Tesco, Waitrose, Aldi and Co-op. The letter has also been signed by environmentalists .Petrochemical Hydrogen Film Automotive

-Naphtha volatility led by tightness, upstream crude in cautious market

European open-specification naphtha (OSN) values were firmer at recent highs this week with steady demand from petrochemical crackers continuing to support outright values, although softening gasoline prices and limited export opportunities left the overall market cautious. Petrochemical Hydrogen Film Automotive

Bucking a trend seen in most middle distillate markets, naphtha fundamentals remain supported by ongoing tightness with limited inflows exacerbated by reduced refinery run rates and an extended autumn maintenance season amid dwindling margins.

That said, fluctuations in upstream Brent crude futures which are facing headwinds from a resurgence of coronavirus infections in some countries, a supply overhang and concerns about a recovery in fuel demand, continue to restrict any upswing in naphtha values and keeping them largely range bound.
