-Eastman furthers sustainable offer with Naia Renew fibre

Naia Renew fibre is said to be traceable with certified biodegradability that captures the value of hard-to-recycle materials that would otherwise be destined for landfill.

Eastman, the producer of sustainably sourced Naiaä cellulosic fibre, has introduced its new Naia Renew portfolio, sourced from 60% wood pulp and 40% recycled waste plastics. Naia Renew cellulosic fibre is said to be traceable with certified biodegradability that captures the value of hard-to-recycle materials that would otherwise be destined for landfills. It can be produced at scale to deliver sustainability without compromise to the fashion world, Eastman reports. Petrochemical PET Recycling Biofuel

“Naia Renew enables a circular economy for the fashion industry and helps brands meet their eco-conscious goals,” said Ruth Farrell, global marketing director of textiles for Eastman.

-Rosneft develops synthetic crude oil unit

The Rosneft United Research and Development Centre, the institute of the corporate R&D complex of Rosneft Oil Company, has developed a laboratory unit for synthetic crude oil, said the company. Petrochemical PET Recycling Biofuel

The unit, which completed a synthetic oil production run, is capable of converting methane to synthetic liquid hydrocarbons. Rosneft said its technology for obtaining synthetic oil from associated petroleum gas has undergone a series of expert reviews, including international ones, and has been assessed as advanced process solution.

In a press statement, Rosneft said: “Synthetic crude oil is more environmentally friendly than natural crude oil, and when blended with natural crude oil it improves its quality. “The Company’s specialists are currently preparing to create a pilot plant at the field to test it under real operating conditions.

-Major Innovation Brings A New Level Of Sustainability To PET Bottle Recycling

Around the world, there is now general agreement that the only possible development model capable of delivering a “zero waste” future to the world is the Circular Economy. Today, however, there are only a few cases of closed-circuit systems that can take a material that has reached the end of its originally-intended useful life, and make it new again, without generating more waste. Petrochemical PET Recycling Biofuel

The race is on to develop more such systems. Nowhere is the pressure greater than in the plastics packaging sector. That pressure is particularly strong in Europe. Not surprisingly then, some of the most important responses to that pressure are coming from European organisations.

-Keurig Dr Pepper Begins Transition to 100% Recycled Plastic Bottles for Snapple and Core Brands

The initiative will eliminate approximately 46.3 million pounds of virgin plastic that Keurig Dr Pepper uses annually. Petrochemical PET Recycling Biofuel

Keurig Dr Pepper (KDP) announced that its Snapple and Core brands are transitioning to bottles made of 100% recycled (rPET) plastic, eliminating approximately 46.3 million pounds of virgin plastic used by KDP annually. Snapple is available now in 100% recycled-plastic, 16-oz. bottles in West Coast markets; it will continue to roll out in phases across the country through early next year. In addition, with production underway, Core bottles made from 100% recycled plastic will be on shelves beginning in early 2021.

“Transitioning to recycled plastic bottles for two of our key brands is a critical next step in Keurig Dr Pepper’s commitment to a circular economy,” said Monique Oxender, Chief Sustainability Officer. “This important portfolio evolution enables us to offer consumers their favorite beverages, while meeting their desire for more sustainable packaging.”

-CCL aims for bottle recycling boost with investment in film project

CCL Industries Inc. today announced plans for a strategic new capacity investment at its Innovia Films extrusion site in Plock, Poland. A new six-metre multi-layer co-extrusion line will be installed to produce EcoFloat shrink sleeve material. Petrochemical PET Recycling Biofuel

This hybrid polyolefin film facilitates easy separation of labels from PET bottles and other types of plastic containers in the recycling process with the aim of enabling bottle-to-bottle circularity, an important goal for global food and beverage brand owners. The capacity will come online in early 2022 with most of the capital deployed in 2021.

“CCL developed a floatable polyolefin shrink film to meet the new market demands and to help brand owners reach their sustainability and recycling targets set by the EU. We see this as the sustainable decoration solution of the future – for a whole range of packaging in the beverage, dairy, home care and other industries,” says Guenther Birkner, president of Innovia and CCL’s food and beverage business.

-Nova sees progress from Indonesian recycling effort

Nova Chemicals is seeing results from its plastics recycling efforts in Indonesia.

Project STOP — a recycling program started in 2017 by materials firm Borealis AG and sustainable land use and energy firm SYSTEMIQ — has to date diverted 5,500 tons of waste from the environment in Muncar, Indonesia, Todd Becker, Nova polyethylene vice president, said during the recent 2020 Global Plastics Summit.

The Muncar program started in 2018 and includes distribution of 5-gallon buckets to individual homes. Petrochemical PET Recycling Biofuel

The buckets are then picked up and their contents are sorted and bundled to recover value from post-user materials, Becker added.

-Collaboration aims to enable automotive plastics traceability

Circularise recently launched a project with Porsche and its material suppliers, Borealis, Covestro and Domo Chemicals, to enable the traceability of plastics on blockchain.

The project also aims to ensure the use of sustainable materials in Porsche cars can be proven. By digitising materials Circularise was able to create a digital thread through the whole supply chain, enabling material traceability and other sustainability metrics.

Getting information from supply chains has always been a challenge due their complexity and number of suppliers, amongst other issues. Blockchain is therefore a fitting solution to transparency challenges. Petrochemical PET Recycling Biofuel

Antoon Versteeg, Project Lead Innovation Research at Porsche, said: “We need to know more details on the parts and materials being used in our products, that means information on production processes deep down the supply chain, statements of recycled content and more.

-TÜV SÜD certifies 3D printing of LEHVOSS high-temp polyamide-based filament on Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle

The certification was commissioned by LEHVOSS and Ultimaker and covers both the mechanical properties of the high-temperature polyamide-based material and the test specimen production, which is made up of dimensional tolerances, filament production, pressure process and emissions during the building of parts.

TÜV SÜD carried out an extensive testing process, which included an on-site inspection of both Ultimaker’s and LEHVOSS’ production facilities as well as a quality audit of the S5 machine, the parallel printing of test specimens and tests around geometric accuracy. TÜV SÜD also considered mechanical properties, material feedstock and emissions in its evaluations. Petrochemical PET Recycling Biofuel

The inspection and certification organisation considers the certification of processes like this to be a ‘decisive milestone’ on the way to competitive production using 3D printers, helping industry to see the difference between the technology as a prototyping tool and a manufacturing one.
