-Spandex price increases more amid tight supply

Affected by moderate demand since the middle of Q3, supply of spandex exceeded demand before but turned to behind demand at the end of Q3. Price of spandex climbed up mainly supported by surging downstream demand. In addition, ascending cost was another upward momentum.

Operating rate of spandex has been around 90% now, but supply of conventional descriptions remained tight after earlier stocks decreased. Price increment kept increasing in the second half of Sep. Supply of spandex 20D-40D was tight.

Stimulated by rising cost and low stocks, mainstream spandex companies such as Huafon, Xinxiang, Tayho, Huahai and Aoshen increased price by around 2,000yuan/mt from Oct 15 amid tight supply and restricted large orders.

By now, mainstream price of spandex 40D was 30,000-32,000yuan/mt, higher at 32,500-34,000yuan/mt for high-end ones, with increment at around 1,500-2,000yuan/mt after the National Day holiday. Price of spandex 40D has rose by as high as 3,200yuan/mt since mid-Q3, close to the level at the beginning of 2019.

German researchers create a degradable plastic from food industry waste

Two researchers from Hamburg have managed to develop a “bio-plastic” from waste from the food industry. The new plastic is bio-degradable and should help to reduce environmental pollution.Petrochemical PETBottle PVC Polymers

Developing a “bio-plastic”

Two researchers from the Hamburg University of Technology, Anne Lamp and Johanna Baare, have developed a plastic that is biodegradable and can be completely broken down within two weeks. Announcing their research in the Hamburg Journal, the scientists wrote, “The biggest criticism of bio-plastics that are currently on the market is that they are made from food. That’s why our motivation was to use residues from food processing.”

“It was precisely our aim to find a solution for the products that would end up in nature so that they would not continue to pollute our environment and be a disadvantage for animals and people, but actually disappear,” said Baare.

-Calm reflection under hot market atmosphere

Polyester market was very hot when demand hit expectation after the National Day holiday. Price of PSF futures hit limit up on Friday again. Overall market seemed to be exciting. Petrochemical PETBottle PVC Polymers

However, after comparing other products, cotton and viscose market changed more greatly

It reminded us the news about the order transfer from India. India is competitive in cotton textiles rather than polyester. Cotton and viscose market is so hot recently, which seems to echo the order transfer. Thus, demand for polyester is stimulated by that for cotton and viscose? After all, textile and apparel market does not specify feedstock strictly. Theoretically, synchronization effect exists on feedstock market.

-Enviroo to build $20m recycling plant

Enviroo has revealed plans for a £20 million ($25m) plastics recycling facility at Peel L&P Environmental’s energy and resource hub, Protos, near Ellesmere Port in the UK.

The facility, which aims to recycle some of the 4.9 million tonnes of plastics waste created in the UK, will take PET and convert it into raw material for food-grade packaging. Technology partners include Erema and Sorema Technologies, which will provide equipment to sort and wash the waste and create flakes that will then form rPET pellets.

The facility is the next plot proposed for the Plastic Park at Protos, following consent of a plastics-to-hydrogen facility earlier this year.

The Plastic Park will cluster together plastics recycling and recovery technologies to create value from plastics waste, helping to avoid it ending up in landfill, exported overseas or in the oceans. Petrochemical PETBottle PVC Polymers

-China abandons GDP growth target, to enhance stimulus measures

China has decided not to set a GDP growth target for this year and is focusing on higher spending and more stimulus to support the economy, Premier Ki Keqiang said in his government report on Friday. Petrochemical PETBottle PVC Polymers

This is the first time the country omitted a GDP goal since 1990.

Not setting a specific target for economic growth will enable all of China to concentrate on ensuring stability on other aspects, Li said.

Priorities would be on stabilising employment, ensuring living standards, winning the battle against poverty as well as building a moderately prosperous society in all aspects, he said.

-WMG and Senergy Innovations develop graphene-enabled all polymer solar thermal cell

Researchers led by Professor Tony McNally, from WMG, at the University of Warwick, in partnership with Senergy Innovations, have launched the first nanomaterial enabled all polymer solar thermal cell. This achievement was supported by funding from BEIS (Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy).

The thermal properties of the polymers that were used were modified to enable heat from sunlight to be transferred with high efficiency to heat water in a low cost and sustainable way. Petrochemical PETBottle PVC Polymers

The modular design of the cells reportedly allows for the rapid construction of a solar thermal cell array on both domestic and industry roofing.

The team is now working with a consortium of industry partners focused on manufacturing the solar thermal cells in high volumes.

-Linde and Shell team up to commercialize lower-carbon technology for ethylene

Technology could lead to lower carbon emissions, offers a catalytic alternative to steam cracking Petrochemical PETBottle PVC Polymers

Pullach, Germany, October 15, 2020 – Linde GmbH and Shell today announce an exclusive collaboration agreement on ethane-oxidative dehydrogenation (E-ODH) technology for ethylene production. The catalytic process is an alternative route to ethane steam cracking, offering the potential of economic advantages, acetic acid co-production and significantly lower overall carbon footprint through electrification of power input.

The two companies have been developing E-ODH independently for many years and this new collaboration brings together their complementary patent positions, expert know-how and common commitment to a lower-carbon future. The agreement will enable accelerated deployment of this novel technology across the wider chemicals sector, with Linde marketing to customers under the name EDHOX™.

-Priority Plastics expands Portland PET capacity

US rigid plastics packaging converter Priority Plastics has continued to invest in additional capacity with the installation of new injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) equipment at its Portland, Indiana facility.

Priority Plastics claims that the single-stage technology is new to the US and exclusive to the company. It significantly increases the firm’s PET container capacity and the ability to offer unique container shapes and sizes. Containers from 1-gallon (4.5-litre) to 25-gallon (113-litre) drums are possible. Petrochemical PETBottle PVC Polymers

The company can now produce PET drums that weigh 30-50 per cent less than HDPE and metal versions. They are also stackable and feature integrated handles. Priority Plastics claims that the technology saves up to 40 per cent electricity and is equipped with an air regeneration system designed to recover two-thirds of the high pressure blowing air.

-Celanese increases prices globally for engineered materials

Celanese (Dallas, Texas) is implementing a worldwide price increase, effective 1 November or as contracts allow, for its engineered materials product portfolio. Prices will rise by up to 10%, it says, as per Chemweek.

The increase is due to a пїЅsignificant demand increaseпїЅ for its specialty polymer products, according to Celanese. Petrochemical PETBottle PVC Polymers

As MRC informed earlier, Celanese Corporation, a global technology and specialty materials company, and a global leader in vinyl acetate ethylene (EVA) emulsions, announced an increase in its September low density polyethylene (LDPE) prices in China. Celanese also raised its September prices of ethylene-vinyl-acetate (EVA) by the same amount.
